โWanna go to Hogsmeade with me tomorrow?โ Remus asked, falling into step beside Sirius as they left the common room. His hands were tucked into his pockets, shoulders slightly hunched like he was trying to sound casual about it.
Sirius glanced over, already smiling. โWhatโs the occasion?โ
Remus shrugged. โNo occasion. Justโฆ James is going with some girlโโ
โโand I donโt think heโs actually interested,โ Remus continued, amused. โHeโs just being polite. And Peter got detention.โ
โFor what this time?โ
โThe peanut butter incident.โ
Sirius visibly shuddered. โUgh. The horrorโฆโ he said dramatically, then broke into a laugh. โAlright, yeah. Iโll go with you.โ
Without thinking, he looped his arm through Remusโ.
Remus stilled for half a secondโthen relaxed into it, a small smile tugging at his lips as they walked.
โWe can go look at those plants,โ Sirius added, glancing at him. โThe ones at the apothecary you keep staring at like you want to take them home and raise them as your children.โ
Remus huffed. โI do notโโ
โI donโt have the money for one of those,โ Remus said, shaking his head. โTheyโre ridiculously expensive. We can just do the usual.โ
Sirius waved that off immediately. โNah. Weโre making a day of it.โ
He tugged Remus along toward the stairs leading down to the library.
โIโll get you one of your weird carnivorous plants,โ Sirius went on, grinning like heโd already decided it. โAnd weโll get chocolate, and books, andโoh, I dunnoโmaybe lunch.โ
Remus let himself be pulled along, watching Sirius more than where they were going.
โHowโs that sound?โ Sirius asked, glancing back at him.
โโฆSounds like a date.โ
Sirius laughed, bright and easy. โIt does, doesnโt it?โ
Remus let out a quiet laugh of his own as they reached their usual spot in the library, slipping into their familiar chairs.
Sirius dropped into his seat across from him, still smiling.
โOkay,โ Sirius said, tugging his jacket tighter around himself as they stepped into the crisp Hogsmeade air. โHoneydukes first? Or Zonkoโs?โ
Remus didnโt even hesitate. โDefinitely Honeydukes. Get something to snack on between the other shops.โ
Sirius grinned at him, bright and a little fond. โYouโre so smart, Moony.โ
Remus rolled his eyes, but there was a smile tugging at his mouth. โI try.โ
โI want those English toffee bites,โ Sirius added, already steering them down the street.
โYouโre addicted to those,โ Remus said, adjusting his gloves against the cold.
โTheyโre amazing,โ Sirius said dreamily, pressing a hand to his chest like it was a life-altering experience.
Remus just shook his head, amused, and followed him inside.
They spent the next hour wandering.
Sweets tucked into their pockets, chocolate shared between them as they moved from shop to shop. Sirius picked up random trinkets and dramatically debated their importance to his life. Remus lingered over books and odd little magical objects, occasionally pointing something out with quiet excitement.
By the time they ducked into a small place for lunch, their cheeks were pink from the cold and their hands brushed just a little too often across the table.
When they stepped back out, Sirius didnโt slow.
โAlright,โ he said, turning toward the apothecary.
Remus immediately caught on. โPadfootโโ
โNope,โ Sirius said, already walking.
โPadfoot,โ Remus tried again, following him, โyouโve already paid for sweets and lunch. I donโt need the plant, theyโre tooโโ
โEeeenough, Moony,โ Sirius dragged the word out, shooting him a look over his shoulder. โI want to. Okay? Youโve wanted one for ages.โ
Remus opened his mouth to argue againโ
โbut Sirius had already pushed the door open.
A soft chime rang as they stepped inside.
The air smelled earthy and strange, filled with rows of jars and softly glowing plants. The display window was exactly where Remus had left it last time.
Sirius made a beeline for it.
โThere,โ he said immediately, reaching for a plant with deep purple leaves and spiraling stalks. As he lifted it, the plant gave a small sway, its toothy little mouth snapping shut with a soft click.
Sirius turned, holding it out. โIt was this one, right?โ
Remus hesitated. โYes, butโโ
Close enough that Remus could feel the warmth of him despite the cold clinging to his coat.
โMy parents give me more money than I know what to do with,โ Sirius said, quieter now. Less joking. โI want to at least spend it on someone I loโโ
โโฆsomeone whoโs close to me,โ he finished, a little softer.
Sirius placed the plant gently into his hands.
โThereโs no limit,โ Sirius added, his voice warm again, like he hadnโt just almost said something bigger. โPick anything you want.โ
Remus looked down at the plant.
โโฆYouโre ridiculous,โ he said quietly.
Sirius grinned. โI know, but here I am. Buying you dangerous vegetation.โ
Remus let out a small laugh, shaking his head, but he didnโt give the plant back.
And he didnโt miss what Sirius had almost said.
They walked back toward Hogwarts at an easy pace, the late afternoon sky streaked with gold and pink. The chill had settled deeper now, but neither of them seemed to mind.
Remus held the small bag close to his chest in one hand, careful and protective. The warming charm stitched into the lining kept the plant comfortable, and every so often heโd peek inside like he needed to reassure himself it was still there.
Sirius noticed, but he didnโt say anythingโjust smiled to himself.
โDid you know Alice in Wonderland was based on a real experience?โ Remus said suddenly, breaking the quiet.
Sirius snorted. โHow? Thought it was just some acid trip.โ
Remus huffed. โNope. Itโs exaggerated, obviouslyโmost stories areโbut thereโs some truth to it.โ
Sirius glanced over, amused. โGo on then, Professor Lupin.โ
Remus rolled his eyes but continued anyway, warming to the topic. โIt was this Muggle girlโAlice. She spotted a rabbit, but it wasnโt just a rabbit. It was an Animagus. She followed it through into the Wizarding world.โ
Sirius raised a brow. โThat seemsโฆ like a security issue.โ
โMassive one,โ Remus agreed. โBut it happened out in the Ariundle Oakwood. Remote enough that it probably went unnoticed for a while.โ
Sirius nodded slightly, listening now.
โThe Mad Hatter,โ Remus went on, โwas real too. Wellโsort of. He was a hatter, and he was mad, but that part came from mercury poisoning. Still, he was also a wizard.โ
โCharming,โ Sirius muttered.
โAnd the rabbit at the tableโthe March Hare?โ Remus added. โNot a hare at all. A Centzon Tลtลchtin. Theyโre these strange magical rabbits from The Aztecs that thrive on chaos andโฆ drunken parties, apparently.โ
Sirius let out a laugh. โOf course they do.โ
โThough Iโve no idea what one was doing in Strontian,โ Remus admitted.
โHoliday?โ Sirius suggested lightly.
As he said it, he reached overโalmost absentmindedlyโand took Remusโ hand.
This time, he didnโt hesitate. He laced their fingers together.
Remus kept talking for another second before it registered.
But he didnโt pull away.
โCould be,โ he said, a little softer now, glancing down briefly at their joined hands before continuing. โAnywayโฆ the Red Queen wasnโt a queen at all. Just a dark witch. She was using the Imperius Curse on the villagersโcontrolling everything.โ
Siriusโ expression shifted slightly at that. โThatโsโฆ darker than the book.โ
โYeah,โ Remus said quietly. โAll the creatures Alice metโmost of them were real magical beasts. Some weโve studied. Others are justโฆ recorded sightings.โ
โAnd she justโwhat?โ Sirius asked. โStumbled through all that with no idea what she was looking at?โ
โExactly,โ Remus nodded. โShe was a Muggle. None of it made sense to her. So it turned into nonsense. Dreams. Talking animals.โ
Sirius hummed thoughtfully.
Then squeezed Remusโ hand just slightly.
โSo how did she defeat the Red Queen?โ he asked. โAs a Muggle?โ
โShe didnโt,โ he said. โNot really.โ
Sirius tilted his head. โThen what happened?โ
Remus glanced ahead, then back at him.
โShe ran,โ he said simply. โEscaped. Found her way back out.โ
โโฆThatโs a bit anticlimactic.โ
Remus shrugged. โSometimes survival is the victory.โ
Sirius looked at him, then gave his hand another small squeeze.
โโฆI think I like your version better,โ he said.
โI had a good time today, Moony,โ Sirius said softly.
He lifted their joined hands, turning Remusโ slightly in his own before pressing a gentle kiss to his knuckles.
The gesture was so simpleโso naturalโand yet it sent warmth rushing straight to Remusโ face.
He flushed immediately, breath catching just a little. โMe too.โ
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Siriusโ lips parted like he was about to say something elseโbut the words never came.
Instead, he leaned forward.
Slowly. Carefully. Like he was giving Remus time to pull away if he wanted to.
Remusโ heart hammered in his chest, loud and unsteady. His fingers tightened slightly around Siriusโ without thinking.
โand then Siriusโ were there.
The kiss was tentative at first, more a question than anything else. A gentle press, like they were both testing the reality of it.
Remus leaned in just a fraction more, and Sirius responded instantly.
Their lips moved together in a quiet, careful rhythmโsoft pushes and lingering pauses, neither of them rushing, neither of them quite believing this was finally happening.
The world seemed to fall away around themโthe cold air, the path back to Hogwarts, everything except this.
Siriusโ free hand hovered uncertainly for a second before settling lightly at Remusโ waist.
Remus exhaled softly against his lips.
When they finally pulled apart, it wasnโt by much. Just enough to breathe.
Siriusโ forehead rested briefly against Remusโ.
โโฆHi,โ he murmured, a little breathless.
Remus let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh.
