"Careful. You've still got my birthday and Christmas to prepare for. You start giving me expectations you might be setting yourself up for failure." Arden teased, she actually didn't mind that he was a bit cocky, it was that self confidence and assuredness that she had always admired about him. Perfection wasn't something Arden was seeking from a partner. And that wasn't a dig on Marlo, who she actually had such a high regard for but felt she had never properly expressed. She had just been taught to not expect much out of anyone from an early age, starting with her own parents. Which was maybe why it had stung more when she thought he hadn't shown up. And maybe in a stupid self sabotage way she was allowing her disappointment to put those walls back up, to push him away with the excuse of saving their relationship, because she was scared of hurt more than that down the line. Which wasn't completely fair to him. Because he did show up. Sure he had arrived late but he was standing here in front of her and trying to make it up to her.
"But it won't always be, it can't always be, and I have to be okay with that. You know that's true." She shot back, her voice raising slightly not out of anger but to make sure her point came out clearly. That as much as she enjoyed the little happy bubble they had been in since starting their relationship they had to start being more realistic with each other, especially now if their relationship was going to be out in the open. Which she figured there wasn't any real hiding from the looks they were getting as some of her peers passed them on their way out of the building. She reached up to cup one of his cheeks and smiled softly at him. "You're so loyal. And you have a good heart. You always go out of your way for the people you care about. Even when we barely saw each other back in the day. I knew if I really needed something I could alway go to you. I don't think I ever thanked you for looking out for me after the fire. So thank you. That meant everything to me back then." She admitted with tears in her eyes because now seemed as good a time as any to confess. "I don't want you to lose that quality about you because you have to choose between too many things at once. And I don't want us to be casual either. I just don't want you to end up resenting me for pulling you in one direction over another because you don't wanna let me down. Because I like you so much it scares me to ruin this sometimes."
There was no doubt in her mind she was falling in love with him. Or more accurately maybe she had already loved him for a while now as a friend. And now that they were dating both the way she viewed him as a friend and as a boyfriend collided and were making her fall that much faster and harder. She sniffled a bit before finally cracking a soft laugh. "I've got tears in my eyes and i'm all snotty. And i'm pretty sure my crown is about to slide off. Not exactly a Disney princess." She nodded when he asked her to dinner. "One thing first." She leaned in to kiss him. "I missed that."
"Remind me when your birthday is again," he joked- or partially joked, he actually didn't know the exact date, just the general time of year. While he knew he didn't have to be perfect for her, he wanted to get pretty damn close if he could help it, just when it really mattered. Her pageants were important to her so that was definitely a time where it mattered, he wanted to show up for her, so failing to even do that today wasn't just letting her down, he'd disappointed himself as well. Rather than wallow in that disappointment though he wanted to do better, and knew he had to if he wanted to regain some of her faith in him.
"I know." His tone was even, understanding, even as she rose her's. If she'd ever raised her voice around him he hardly remembered it, except for Panic maybe, and probably because it wasn't directed at him. He didn't think she was angry with him though, just upset, which was obviously worse, and stern in making sure she got her point across. Navigating a serious relationship was uncharted territory for Marlo but that didn't mean he got to make excuses for himself either, and he didn't intend to, but there was a learning curve they'd have to deal with. His gaze met her's as she cupped his face, "Don't mention it. I would've done all that a million times over and not just 'cause we're from the same place." He hadn't always had feelings for Arden but he had always liked her, and his loyalty to her back then wasn't only based on them being neighbors or even that they were both from the south side. As much as he hated to see her cry he didn't want to make a big fuss out of it, knowing she wanted to be brave in being vulnerable with him, and gently swiped away her tears with his thumb. "I'm not gonna resent you. I gotta work on my time management but that's all really, and I could've texted you. We're good when we're honest with each other."
If he was being honest too he'd probably fallen in love with Arden already but he didn't see the rush in admitting that to himself yet, let alone her. Like her he was scared of ruining what they had but he was also confident in the foundation of their relationship, it wasn't that fragile. "Well we can fix that," he said as he adjusted the crown on her head, fixing some of her hair with it too. He smiled against her lips then leaned in for another quick kiss after. "Me too. You want me to take this?," he nodded to the big bag on her shoulder. "I've got a car today so I won't make you get on the bike lookin' like this."
