Two Sides of the Same Coin
Parallels between Harry Potter and Tom Riddle
1. Biography
Black hair and a strong physical resemblance to their fathers.
Orphans raised by Muggles.
Half-bloods.
Parselmouths.
Born on the 31st of the month (July and December).
Descendants of the Peverells.
Boxes of childhood keepsakes: Harry kept Dudley’s old toys; Tom kept stolen trophies from the orphanage.
Skilled at flying: Harry on a broomstick, Tom without one.
2. Magic and Connection
Wand cores: Twin feathers from the same phoenix.
Both found salvation in magic.
Bound by fate, prophecy, soul, blood, and mind.
Limbo: Both passed through "King's Cross"—the station between worlds.
Death: Tom tried to conquer it; Harry became its Master.
Inverted eye and spell colors: Harry’s green eyes match Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra, while Voldemort’s red eyes match Harry’s Expelliarmus.
Combat styles: Voldemort excels at offense (fighting three Order members at once in the final battle); Harry excels at defense (casting Protego across the Great Hall, effectively dividing it in half).
Visual contrast: Harry’s Polyjuice Potion is golden, while Horcrux blood is black.
3. Hogwarts
Both considered Hogwarts their true home.
Favorite subject: Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Room of Requirement: Both were the first in their generations to find it.
School organizations: The Knights of Walpurgis; Dumbledore’s Army.
The Pedagogy of Power: Both taught their followers advanced magic (Dark Arts for Tom; defensive magic for Harry).
Tom killed a crying girl from another house in the girls’ bathroom (Myrtle); Harry almost killed a crying boy from another house in the exact same location (Draco).
Both questioned Horace Slughorn about Horcruxes.
Both convinced The Grey Lady to reveal the location of Ravenclaw’s diadem.
The Shrieking Shack: Both attacked Snape there (Harry in Prisoner of Azkaban, Voldemort in Deathly Hallows).
The Defiance of Authority: Throughout the series, Harry deliberately avoids addressing Snape as "sir" or "professor"; in Half-Blood Prince, Tom similarly avoids using these titles with Dumbledore. Prompting sharp reminders from their teachers until the boys reluctantly comply.
The Shared Secret:
Dumbledore: "Is there something you wish to tell me?"
Harry and Tom: "No, sir, nothing."
4. Book events
Gringotts: Both were behind the only two successful infiltrations in the bank's history.
The Azkaban Loyalty: Both confirmed the loyalty of an escaped prisoner and brought them back to their side (Sirius Black / Barty Crouch Jr.).
Father Figures: Barty Crouch Jr. wanted Voldemort as a father figure, while Sirius Black wanted to see Harry’s father, James, in him.
Defining the Man: In Book 4, during the duel, Voldemort says to Harry: “And now you face me, like a man…”; in Book 7, in the final battle, Harry says to Voldemort: “Be a man… try… Try for some remorse…”
In Book 4, they stand in a circle surrounded by the Dark side during their duel; in Book 7, they stand in a circle surrounded by the Light side during their final confrontation.
Mirrored Ages: In the final battle, their ages are exact reflections of one another —Voldemort is 71, while Harry is 17.
5. Character and Psychology
“My boy. My son. I love you.”
Oh, to be seen, understood, and loved! Inspired by a precious scene in Glorious by @obsidianpen Chapter 2: An Offering of Peace
