“What? I do too mean it.”
All thoughts of politics and power and what that might mean evaporated. Parkinson’s voice was quiet but shrill, and though she was trying to keep her composure, she was failing.
“Okay, okay.” Harry held her with her back to his chest for a beat so she wouldn’t lose her mind. Her magic quivered with fear. She really wanted to be on Harry’s good side, and Harry really didn’t want her to make a scene.
“It’s fine,” he said as he unwound her. “Really. I don’t blame you for trying to turn me over.”
“You don’t?” The apprehension was palpable.
“No, I don’t. In fact, I wish everyone would have listened to you.”
Parkinson gaped at him, speechless. She clearly hadn’t expected that.
Harry was perhaps even more surprised, because he really meant it. “If they had, a lot of bloodshed could have been avoided… If they had, Neville would probably still be alive.”
The song ended. Harry bowed with her hand in his, bringing it lightly to his lips, as all true gentlemen did with the eligible ladies they danced with. She watched him, frozen with shock. “Thank you for the dance, Parkinson.”
