NYCFiveHundred - New York City’s New Creative Collective
9/FiveHundred – A Creative Music and Art Series Launches at Pier 57
New York, NY (July 10, 2013) - A group of New York City artists have banded together to create a group called NYCFiveHundred, sharing a different idea of what is possible. They hope to spread their influence and compound their inspiration through this collective, sharing ideas and energy. Their first action will be a creative series showcasing music and visual art including photography, painting and design. The series, entitled 9/FiveHundred, will take place at Pier 57 every Saturday from July 13th to August 24th, with the exception of August 10th. Pier 57 boasts painted floors, hanging cargo and neon lights, but each artist in the series is invited to utilize the space in a different way. Each night will be broken up into two hours of performance and an hour of mingling and networking. Visitors will enter an atmosphere that deconstructs a typical “gallery” setting, offering an inclusive, hands-on experience. Each night, we hope to include what poet Federico Garcia Lorca describes as “a momentary burst of inspiration, the blush of all that is truly alive…the trembling of the moment and then a long silence.”
The NYCFiveHundred is a modern extension of “The Downtown 500,” a creative collective that came together in the late 70’s through early 80’s to turn struggle into art. The harsh living conditions of downtown provided fodder for their creative minds, banding together a group of the world’s most influential artists and producing works that would come to redefine art. An obsession with the 70’s and 80’s has brought Basquiat to the forefront, not only in the art world in New York galleries, but in fashion with brands such as Uniqlo and Supreme, and in music with artists such as Jay-Z. The energy of that era and of Basquiat’s concept of downtown New York has survived and inspired through present day, preserved in street art, the street signs, the walls of 5th story apartments that by now, have listened to the secrets of famous and starving artists alike. Today, more than ever, you can feel it.
On July 13that Pier 57, you will be introduced to the first group of 2013’s NYCFiveHundred – 9/FiveHundred.
