In January 1928 Bonnie took a job at Hargraves Cafe. The steady work seemed to alleviate her loneliness and sense of failure. She enjoyed talking and carrying on with the cafe regulars. Her ready smile and energetic personality quickly established her popularity. Located in a small semicircular building, Hargraves no doubt drew a lot of business from nearby Baylor Medical College. The employees of Yates Laundry, too, frequented the cafe. Yates, for years one of Dallas's largest and finest laundries, was situated in two large buildings on Floyd Street, directly behind Hargraves. The back door of the cafe faced the laundry. Because the laundry workers were not allowed to leave their stations except during the noon hour, they had developed a system with which to obtain snacks and sandwiches. At Bonnie's suggestion, whenever the Yates people needed something from across the street, they'd go to their front door and whistle. Bonnie would appear at the cafe's back door, run across the street, and take everyone's order. If it happened to be slow in the cafe, Bonnie would stay a while and chat with the laundry women. They liked her a lot. She reminded them of a "delicate china doll," small, almost fragile, with a round, petite face and creamy porcelain complexion. Moreover, her appearance was typically fresh and clean. Something the Yates personnel always noticed in a person.
