maybe a violent take of mine but regardless of whatever opinions one has about the new mdzs revisions, i hope you (@ the fandom) do realize that even if there was love between them, it doesn't mean that lan xichen and lan wangji were not born of violence. they were. it doesn't matter that they were in love or whatever (and i hate this. but unimportant to the point) she was locked up in the fucking gentian house and kept in there her entire life until she died and we don't even know what her personality was like for someone who killed qingheng-jun's teacher. like you do understand that this is a forced captivity situation anyway right. why are people calling this sweet and reassuring that "the jades were not born of violence" YES THEY WERE. who the fuck cares about whether they were in love or not

Mulan AU where she does get caught by the other fresh recruits while she's bathing but Mushu helps her spin it like the lake is cursed by an evil lizard demon and will turn men into women if they stay in it for too long.
From there it's not actually difficult to get the other soldiers onboard with covering up the fact that poor Ping took one for the team and got afflicted by the vagina curse, especially since it would have been all of them if they hadn't gotten the warning ahead of time. So they agree to help him cover it up, because obviously the army's not going to understand.
Shang is... tentatively glad that the men are bonding and getting along, even if they continue to be deeply weird about it.
Mulan: Uh, what boobs? Huh? Where did these come from?
Mushu: *facepalms and thinks quickly* (speaks from the shadows) I AM THE SPIRIT OF THE LAKE! BEWARE MY CURSED WATERS FOR THEY WILL TURN MEN INTO WOMEN!
Ling, Yao, and Chien Po: Oh no! The spirit of the cursed waters!

"But it's not FOR them!!!" The biggest military power in the world belongs to a christofascist nation overseen by a felon found guilty of 34 federal crimes and has greenlit a gestapo with more direct funding than the entire military of Canada for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. Let Hetero Jessica throw some biodegradable glitter at a municipal parade
At this point if anyone is trying to exclude anyone benignly pro-queer from a pro-queer space I'm just going to assume you're a fed or something idk like something something destabilize the movement from within or whatever
really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.
also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.

Thought I'd join in on the fun with @2026-book-bingo since I'm trying to read more books this year! I love books I miss reading as much as I used to.... it's been hard getting back into it consistently but words are good. Beautiful. Anyway
Will be updated every few weeks(?) with new posts + details on what I read under the cut!
MC Isn't Human
The Hybrid Prince by Tui T. Sutherland: slightly cheating, I think? It came out this year but is a new installment in a very long ongoing series so.... hm. Yeah. Wings of Fire is a series about dragons! I love my dragons. This was such a nostalgic read I didn't realize I had missed this world so much; getting new info on it was like getting a sugar rush LOL. I think there's much to say about repetitive character dynamics and character archetypes, but given it is middle-school fiction and I am... not that anymore, I'm much kinder on it!
College or University Setting
Babel by R.F. Kuang: kind of crazy it took me until 2026 to get to it, but I did enjoy Babel for the most part! A bit heavy-handed, I think, and the ending took me three months flat to finish, but: a fun and interesting read, and I LOVE languages, so it scratched a really satisfying itch in my brain...
Not Originally Published in English
I did actually read........ lots. Because well I'm reading more danmei... but for this square I'll pick...
将进酒 (Ballad of Sword and Wine) by Tang Jiu Qing (trans. XiA, Jia, amixy; Lianyin (fan translation)): since it's the one that doesn't quite fit into any of the other boxes haha. QJJ is a super fun read filled with politics and shenanigans (and one of my favorite romances ever, truly) and for all my criticism (mainly re: racism), I think T97 is a very talented writer, truly. QJJ has now become one of my hyperfixation fandoms. Don't look at my AO3. Anyway, I look forward to one day reading her other works!
Historical Fantasy
千秋 (Thousand Autumns) by Meng Xi Shi (trans. Faelicy): set from 575 C.E., during the rule of Yuwen Yong, onwards! Qian Qiu takes some liberties, especially since it's a wuxia novel, but broadly speaking follows real-life historical events. While not as dense at QJJ, it's still fairly plotty and the romance is sort of secondary to it, while being important...? The central question being: what happens when you throw together two complete opposites together; will they remain unchanged and steadfast? Would recommend, really! (This also caught me in a fandom way help...)
2026 Debut Author
The Poet Empress by Shen Tao: one of my five-star reads this year! For a debut novel, she truly outdid herself; East Asian fantasy is one of my favorite genres to read from, and The Poet Empress is... well. It's quite a depressing and heartbreaking read, but also it's? So hopeful and determined to show you that hope is real? The character building is just. YES. Yin Wei one of the protagonists of all time. Not to mention the magic system! Is so fun! Would definitely recommend (and do NOT listen to the marketing of this book it's godawful it is LYING to you).
I am.... trying to read More Books right now and attempting to finish them one at a time! It just takes consistency and habit as always lol. (Does catching up to a currently ongoing manga count for the square...? Probably not lol)
(i have read more than this recently! they just do not fit into these categories lol. I love reading) (I keep wondering if the fish yaoi book counts as romance novel. The palace drama elements make me say no though... oh well I'll find a romance-centric novel that isn't xianxia/wuxia/etc. eventually)
