Abstract: The GSHHG combines the older GSHHS shoreline database with WDBII rivers and borders, available for file download in either ESRI shapefile format or in a native binary format.

The GSHHG geography data come in five different resolutions: crude(c), low(l), intermediate(i), high(h), and full(f).

Shorelines are further organized into 4 hierarchical levels: boundary between land and ocean (L1), boundary between lake and land (L2), boundary between island-in-lake and lake (L3), and boundary between pond-in-island and island (L4).

Abstract: The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) was flown aboard the space shuttle Endeavour February 11-22, 2000. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) participated in an international project to acquire radar data which were used to create the first near-global set of land elevations.

Endeavour orbited Earth 16 times each day during the 11-day mission, completing 176 orbits. SRTM successfully collected radar data over 80% of the Earth's land surface between 60° north and 56° south latitude with data points posted every 1 arc-second (approximately 30 meters).

SRTM Data Products:

The level of processing and the resolution of the data will vary by SRTM data set.

- SRTM Non-Void Filled elevation data were processed from raw C-band radar signals spaced at intervals of 1 arc-second (approximately 30 meters) at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). This version was then edited or finished by the NGA to delineate and flatten water bodies, better define coastlines, remove spikes and wells, and fill small voids. Data for regions outside the United States were sampled at 3 arc-seconds (approximately 90 meters) using a cubic convolution resampling technique for open distribution.

- SRTM Void Filled elevation data are the result of additional processing to address areas of missing data or voids in the SRTM Non-Void Filled collection. The voids occur in areas where the initial processing did not meet quality specifications. Since SRTM data are one of the most widely used elevation data sources, the NGA filled the voids using interpolation algorithms in conjunction with other sources of elevation data. The resolution for SRTM Void Filled data is 1 arc-second for the United States and 3 arc-seconds for global coverage.

- SRTM 1 Arc-Second Global elevation data offer worldwide coverage of void filled data at a resolution of 1 arc-second (30 meters) and provide open distribution of this high-resolution global data set. Some tiles may still contain voids. The SRTM 1 Arc-Second Global (30 meters) data set will be released in phases starting September 24, 2014. Users should check the coverage map in EarthExplorer to verify if their area of interest is available. Please note that tiles above 50° north and below 50° south latitude are sampled at a resolution of 2 arc-second by 1 arc-second.

SRTM File Formats:

EarthExplorer offers SRTM data with a regularly spaced grid of elevation points in three file formats:

- Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED®) is a standard mapping format designed by the NGA. Each file or cell contains a matrix of vertical elevation values spaced at regular horizontal intervals measured in geographic latitude and longitude units. File size is approximately 25 MB for 1-arc-second data files and approximately 3 MB for 3-arc-second data files.

- Band interleaved by line (BIL) is a binary raster format with an accompanying header file which describes the layout and formatting of the file. File size is approximately 7 MB for 1-arc-second data files and approximately 1 MB for 3- arc-second data files.

- Georeferenced Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF) is a TIFF file with embedded geographic information. This is a standard image format for GIS applications. File size is approximately 25 MB for 1-arc-second data files and approximately 3 MB for 3-arc-second data files.

Abstract: FAO's GLC-SHARE database of year 2014, beta-release 1.0, collects previously scattered and unharmonized land cover information from around the globe into one centralized database. Data pulled from multiple sources and partners was quality-controlled and harmonized using internationally accepted definitions and standards, bringing a wealth of country-level information into one consolidated dataset spanning the entire planet.

Abstract: The Digital Nautical Chart is produced by the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and is an unclassified, vector-based digital database containing maritime significant features essential for safe marine navigation. DNC’s 018, 026, 027, and 028 are produced in partnership with Canadian Forces Mapping and Charting Establishment Hydrographic Services Office (Esquimalt).

The Digital Nautical Chart database consist of 29 Digital Nautical Chart geographic regions providing a complete worldwide footprint containing over 5,000 charts of varying scales between 84° North latitude and 81° South latitude and supports a variety of Geographic Information System applications. Digital Nautical Chart is produced in the standard Vector Product Format (VPF).

Scale: The Digital Nautical Chart contains four library categories based on scale and purpose of the source charts including Harbor, Approach, Coastal and General charts, from largest to smallest scale, respectively. In addition, there is a single Browse library that acts as an index.

Accuracy: Absolute horizontal and vertical accuracy are expressed at a circular/linear errors at 90% probability. NGA strives to compile hard copy nautical charts with the most accurate depth information available. NGA charts are compiled from a variety of sources with varying accuracies. Information regarding the source data used for each chart comprising the Digital Nautical Chart can be found in the Data Quality coverage of each library.

Content: The Digital Nautical Chart database is based on and developed from the feature content of NGA and National Ocean Service hard copy charts. The features depicted are thematically organized into 12 layers or coverages including: Cultural Landmarks, Earth Cover, Environment, Hydrography, Inland Waterways, Land Cover, Limits, Aids to Navigation, Obstructions, Port Facilities, Relief, and Data Quality.

Abstract: The Global Administrative Unit Layers (GAUL) is an initiative implemented by FAO within the CountrySTAT and Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) projects. The GAUL compiles and disseminates the best available information on administrative units for all the countries in the world, providing a contribution to the standardization of the spatial dataset representing administrative units.

The GAUL always maintains global layers with a unified coding system at country, first (e.g. departments) and second administrative levels (e.g. districts). Where data is available, it provides layers on a country by country basis down to third, fourth and lowers levels. Unsettled territories are reported, the approach of GAUL is to deal with these areas in such a way to preserve national integrity for all disputing countries (see TechnicalaspectsGAUL2014_mid.pdf and G2014_DisputedAreas_mid.dbf).

GAUL is released once a year and the target beneficiary of GAUL data is the UN community and other authorized international and national partners. Data might not be officially validated by authoritative national sources and cannot be distributed to the general public. The dataset is free of charge and it can be downloaded by login (to receive an account, just send an email to the contacts listed).

Abstract: ACLED (Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project) is a public collection of political violence data for developing states. These dataset contains information on the specific dates and locations of political violence, the types of event, the groups involved, fatalities and changes in territorial control. Information is recorded on the battles, killings, riots, and recruitment activities of rebels, governments, militias, armed groups, protesters and civilians.

As of early 2014, ACLED has recorded over 80,000 individual events, with ongoing data collection focused on Africa. The data can be used for medium- and long-term analysis and mapping of political violence across developing countries through use of historical data from 1997, as well as informing humanitarian and development work in crisis and conflict-affected contexts through realtime data updates and reports.

Abstract: The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) is the official repository of standard spellings of all foreign geographic names, sanctioned by the United States Board on Geographic Names (US BGN). The database also contains variant spellings (cross-references), which are useful for finding purposes, as well as non-Roman script spellings of many of these names. All the geographic features in the database contain information about location, administrative division, and quality. The database can be used for a variety of purposes, including establishing official spellings of foreign place names, cartography, GIS, GEOINT, and finding places.

Abstract: CShapes is a dataset that provides historical maps of state boundaries and capitals in the post-World War II period. The dataset is coded according to both the Correlates of War and the Gleditsch and Ward (1999) state lists, and is therefore compatible with number of existing databases in the discipline. Provided in a geographic data format, CShapes can be used directly with standard GIS software, allowing spatial computations. In addition, there is a CShapes package for the R statistical toolkit.

Abstract: The HWSD is a 30 arc-second raster database with over 15000 different soil mapping units that combines existing regional and national updates of soil information worldwide (SOTER, ESD, Soil Map of China, WISE) with the information contained within the 1:5 000 000 scale FAO-UNESCO Soil Map of the World (FAO, 19711981). The resulting raster database consists of 21600 rows and 43200 columns, which are linked to harmonized soil property data.

The use of a standardized structure allows for the linkage of the attribute data with the raster map to display or query the composition in terms of soil units and the characterization of selected soil parameters (organic Carbon, pH, water storage capacity, soil depth, cation exchange capacity of the soil and the clay fraction, total exchangeable nutrients, lime and gypsum contents, sodium exchange percentage, salinity, textural class and granulometry).

Reliability of the information contained in the database is variable: the parts of the database that still make use of the Soil Map of the World such as North America, Australia, West Africa and South Asia are considered less reliable, while most of the areas covered by SOTER databases are considered to have the highest reliability (Central and Southern Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe).

Abstract: GADM is a spatial database of the location of the world's administrative areas (or adminstrative boundaries) for use in GIS and similar software. Administrative areas in this database are countries and lower level subdivisions such as provinces, departments, bibhag, bundeslander, daerah istimewa, fivondronana, krong, landsvæðun, opština, sous-préfectures, counties, and thana. GADM describes where these administrative areas are (the "spatial features"), and for each area it provides some attributes, such as the name and variant names.
