ONE.3 the Third Annual Manifest Prize

Three years ago we embarked on another annual project at Manifest. Perhaps intentionally contrary to the approach by some galleries to 'pack it in' at all costs, we decided to produce an exhibit that presents just one work of art in a galle

ry all to itself. Inspired by our jury process which has become refined over the years, and to make our jurors truly sweat it out in narrowing all submissions down to one singular poignant expression of the process, and a true 'manifestation' of the principle of reduction, we launched the Manifest Prize. While an exhibition, a solo one at that, it is also something more - something bridging exhibit with arts funding and public enchantment. Everyone gets excited in anticipation of seeing what comes out of the jury process in the end, and seeing how the work 'feels' in the gallery all to itself. We employ over a dozen jurors throughout the multi-stage process, both from within and outside our region, and remind them repeatedly to judge objectively, viewing the anonymous works with as much detachment as one can muster. Shuffling the jury from stage to stage helps counteract any inherent subconscious bias or chance familiarity of one artist or another. And in the end, those jurors who scored the winning work highly provide commentary for inclusion in the gallery and exhibit catalog. This is the only project for which juror comments are recorded or shared. So this makes The Manifest Prize (ONE 3) one of our most exciting projects each year, and this year we are announcing that the award amount has been increased to $1000. The artist of the winning work will receive this cash award, and five semi-finalists will have their work included in the exhibit catalog. ONE 3 - The third annual Manifest Prize is open for submission through November 1st!

(Note! We are very open to a wide interpretation of what constitutes 'about history'. While a single work alone may not seem particularly historical, when it is combined with

other works in our exhibit it very well may take on an expanded meaning and play a key role in the story of the presentation and the public's read of the exhibit. With this, we want to be clear that submissions need not be literal.)

The selection process for our first exhibit of Season 9, and our lead show for FOTOFOCUS, "DEUS EX MACHINA," is final! Juried by a six-member panel through Manifest's rigorous process, and guest curated by Dennis Kiel, the exhibit features

thirteen works by 11 artists from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Johannesburg, South Africa.
