i know they’re already not dating at that point but one of the cutest moments between spike and drusilla (in my opinion) is in season 5 when drusilla comes back to sunnydale and harmony tells her “you have some nerve coming back here! after breaking my boo-boo‘s heart“ and drusilla just looks at spike and silently mouths “boo-boo?“. overlooked.

In a season where Buffy openly admits that if it would save the world she would sacrifice Dawn—Dawn, her sister, the one person she had sworn to protect at all costs—I find it hard to believe that she would lie to Spike for the sake of letting him go believing he was loved

I definitely think it's more complicated than this. We know for sure that Buffy was in love with Spike in some way by the finale (confirmed by Joss Whedon, implied across the season, her Freudian slip etc etc).

HOWEVER, Buffy doesn't necessarily know for sure if she loves him completely and with the same voracity that Spike wants her to. We're way too early and they've barely had a conversation about a relationship between them. Buffy hasn't had time to even consider what these new feelings for him are so I definitely think there's a hint of insincerity from rushing into that (most likely) romantic confession.

You could argue she fell for Angel super quickly in contrast but 16 year old Buffy just didn't have the same guards around her heart as she does by the time Season 7 comes along.

The tragedy of Spuffy is that the show ends before we see what a real relationship with them ever could have been, and they both verbally acknowledge that it's a conversation for after the final battle.
