Choose your boss, not your job.
Hi there. Reflection mode again. So last post was being “lost” since architect na ako, what to now feels remember? So right now im medyo torn with life. Most days I feel like I’ve got everything sorted out, then some days parang wtf nu ginagawa mue? Well we have our days naman kasi talaga right?
Update lang after the board exam. I worked for my dad, which was the game plan even before taking the board exam. I was really decided to help with the family business which is construction. But di ako nag tagal kasi most of our projects are more of into civil engineering projects? Like roads, bridges, public schools ganon. We also do restos, hospitals, konting bahay but then again its more on construction lang talaga. Not that I have a problem with construction its just that im more inclined to designing ba? Like if ever I’d build something, might as well be it my own design.
So I went back to Manila, applied to a few design firms, and got into one. Medj malaki syang firm, they have design projects, they have construction projects, and even outsourcing projects. (Mostly production of working drawings/3d models/renders.) It was okay nung simula but then again the pamamalakad was so shitty so I left. After 3 months. lol Pero I have to say, malaki yung sweldo ko dun. But then again di naman ako masaya sa trabaho ko so ayun.
And guess back where Im at. Im back to my old firm, returning for the 3rd time. Yup. Third. I started working there when I was in college, did part-time. Then after graduation, I came back. Worked there until I had to resign to review for the board exam. I resigned kasi nga ang goal naman after the board exam is to work for my dad which is why eto nga yung kwento. lol
Words cannot express how happy I am nung tinanggap nila ako ulit. I mean, who does that dba? 3 times kang bumalik sa isang firm. At first I thought it wont last long, na I’d leave anytime soon din. But then it felt like I never left the office. Yes there were some new faces but somehow it still feels the same.
Sobrang okay ako sa work ko right now for so many reasons. I think mainly because I get to really design here? And my outputs are really being put to use. Like nagiging totoo sya, natatayo sa totoong buhay. In most design firms, they don’t let “n00bs” to really design a project. Usually production lang, working drawings, mag render, or if may design man, very minimal lang. But here, Im surprised that my boss lets me decide on certain things in some projects, design-wise.
Another reason is the work ethic there. Sobrang chill namin. If you will see my IG Stories, you’d understand. Not that wala kaming ginagawa, its just that hindi toxic yung workload namin. Yes we do OT but not all the time. Like we’d do OT lang kapag may talagang deadline na hindi kaya ng normal office hours. And we really take time when it comes to the design process.
As an architect, mahalaga yung aesthetics. We just click eh. Not just with my boss but with everyone else. We have this certain kind of aesthetic na everyone gets, kumbaga were on the same page, iisang wavelength ba when it comes to design. Its not a 100% match all the time but alam mo yun, gets na agad.
Lastly I guess would have to be my boss. He’s young so he kind of gets us? Like I said nga, he kind of trusts me with design projects na lately. Parang i’ve designed 3 houses na in like a month parang ganong levels. He’d say straight on to the clients, “Miguel designed that.”
Life’s too short. Sayang ang oras to be doing something that you dont like. I just feel sad pag nakakarinig ako ng kwento na puro OT sila, na wala na silang oras sa friends and family kasi nga puro trabaho. Pro tip: Wag mong gawing buhay mo ang trabaho mo.
“Sinasabi mo lang yan kasi wala kang pamilyang binubuhay.”
Fair argument. So ayun. Tama na. Bottomline, if youre starting palang or still want to learn, see post title.
