some other bands in the stardust street band au
(T-B, L-R: Chris Maerke, Zachary Tanner, Robbie Armstrong, Harold Armstrong, Sam Vermont, Albi Johannes) (using actual patalliro screenshots this time cuz im too lazy to draw em in the au for now)
A very New Wave-influenced rock band, formed in 1984 out of former Stardust Street roadies & session musicians by Christian "Chris" Maerke.
They have had 3 lineups over a 10-year span:
Lineup 1: Only lasted for several months in 1984 before Sam Vermont had various fallouts with band members coinciding with a messy breakup with Chris Maerke, leading him to form Killerbot (who I'll talk about later).
Zachary Tanner - lead vocals (born Jan 20, 1958 in New York City, NY; he/xe; gay trans man)
Sam Vermont - guitar (born August 5, 1957 in Boston, MA; he/him; bisexual)
Christian "Chris" Maerke - keyboards (born Sep 22, 1958 in Copenhagen, Denmark; he/him; gay)
Robbie Armstrong - bass (born Jan 2, 1961 in Houston, TX; he/they; demisexual gay trans man)
Harold Armstrong - drums (born April 30, 1958 in Houston, TX; Robbieâs older brother; he/him; gay)
Lineup 2: The most well-known lineup, lasting from 1984 to 1993, when Robbie Armstrong suddenly passed away from overexhaustion.
Zachary Tanner - lead vocals, guitar
Christian "Chris" Maerke - keyboards
(Mild TW for brief suicide mention past this point)
Lineup 3 - Another short-lived lineup, lasting from Robbie's 1993 death to 1994. Most synonymous with the band's downfall, with Harold Armstrong very clearly heavily affected by his younger brother's death, publicly criticizing Albi Johannes and Chris Maerke over "replacing" Robbie and making statements such as "Kurt Cobain killed himself to divert attention from Robbie". Harold's behaviour (especially the Cobain comments) eventually resulted in him being booted from Magic Mainframe, with the group disbanding later that year.
Zachary Tanner - lead vocals, guitar
Christian "Chris" Maerke - keyboards
Albi Johannes - bass (born Mar 12, 1971 in Rome, Italy; he/they/it; gay enby demiboy)
Zachary Tanner's very public embracing of the occult during the height of the Satanic Panic earned Magic Mainframe tons of controversy during their lifespan, with the band often being accused of promoting Satanism. Zachary's response, however, wasn't the usual "we aren't Satanic", but instead was more about how occultism was being painted in a negative light by Christians and is actually less harmful than most people think, which is perfectly valid imo but only ended up fanning the flames at the time
Zachary also ended up opening an occultist shop in his hometown of New York City, Astrolise Boutique. He is also romantic partners with Maraich Justinof of Stardust Street, in addition to Robbie.
As for the circumstances of Robbie's death, Magic Mainframe were performing at the last day of a music festival in Portland, when Robbie was still getting over a cold. He originally wanted to cancel Magic Mainframe's appearance at the festival, but the organizers forced them to perform, citing the potential cost of refunds and bad PR if they suddenly backed out. During their set, they ended up doing multiple encores, and when the festival finished shortly after, a bad rainstorm hit, causing multiple techs to go home early. Robbie signed on to help take down everything all by himself, while 1) tired from doing multiple encores, 2) getting over a cold, and 3) working in the cold, pouring rain at night. Robbie quite literally worked until his body gave out, as he suffered from hypothermia and pneumonia and went into respiratory arrest late that night shortly after finishing the job. An ambulance was called, but he was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.
Robbie was also a romantic partner of Stardust Streetâs Jada Rochester, with his older brother Harold being Andersen Hassâs partner, until 1994 when Andersen decided to break up with Harold over the Kurt Cobain comments.
Sometime in late 1994 after Magic Mainframe disbanded, Harold completely disappeared from the public eye, currently living in an unidentified small town in Texas.
In 1985, Harold was a surrogate donor for his younger brother, helping Jada & Robbie have their twins: Ryan & Ashley Armstrong (born Oct 12, 1985). (also before you accuse me of anything JADA CARRIED THE BABIES AND HAROLD PROVIDED THE SPERM SINCE ROBBIE COULDNT HAVE BIOLOGICAL KIDS W JADA IM SORRY IF I WORDED IT POORLY)
Early in their career, Magic Mainframe opened for Stardust Street, mostly for the Monochrome Neon tour (Animal Fables didnât have a tour at Maraichâs request). They released their first album in late 1985, which was their only album under Diamond Records before moving to Stardust Records as soon as the label opened in 1986.
Zachary Tanner was a very public opponent of Pat Mariner (president of Diamond Records)âs greedy business practices. In his words, being under Diamond was âconstant sufferingâ and the two regularly fought.
Zachary Tanner once hexed MĂśtley CrĂźe after an unspecified "bad experience" with them.
Killerbot was formed by Sam "Scunky" Vermont in 1984, shortly after getting kicked out of Magic Mainframe. However, Killerbot's music is quite different from Magic Mainframe: (in-universe btw) Killerbot is one of the "Big Five" of thrash metal bands, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax. What sets Killerbot apart, though, is that Killerbot also incorporates more electronic influences into their music, creating a new subgenre of metal known as either "industrithrash" or "electrothrash" depending on who you ask.
Killerbot's lineup is constantly changing, as Scunky's infamous reputation for bad behaviour and ego has resulted in multiple members either leaving or getting booted. Scunky, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, is the only member of Killerbot that has remained since their inception. Another interesting thing about Killerbot is that aside from Scunky, all the members wear robot masks & costumes, which some speculate is due to Scunky's ego, but according to Scunky, it ties into the lore of the band: he's supposedly the inventor of multiple music-playing robots that just happen to have formed a band with their "creator".
While Killerbot does have a fanbase that praises their work as being unique and inventive sound-wise, a lot of metalheads tend to dislike Killerbot and turn to other industrithrash/electrothrash bands inspired by their sound, mostly due to Scunky's behaviours. (As one in-universe YouTube commentor puts it, "I can see why Scunky went with the skunk motif: he quite literally repulses most people around him, only he's a dickhead instead of smelling bad.") In addition to generally being aggresive and prideful, he's quite bitter towards both Magic Mainframe and Stardust Street and has attacked them on too many occasions to count, stayed with Diamond Records even after the former two bands left in protest of Pat Mariner's greedy practices, only leaving in 1987 after a huge fallout between Scunky and Pat, and even then he joined another label instead of Stardust.
However, Scunky's biggest controversies center around him openly encouraging violence during mosh pits, because according to him, "it's fun watching people beat the shit out of each other, and I don't want any of that kiddie Chuck E. Cheese 'don't actwuawwy huwt each othew, pwease!' shit that goes down at other supposedly 'heavy' bands' mosh pits". He earned quite a lot of flak for a 1994 incident at a festival in Atlanta, GA, where he cheered on a fan who brought a baseball bat during a wall of death, who proceeded to injure multiple people including a man who later died in the hospital. After this (and Scunky getting arrested for inciting violence), he apologized and promised to remove anybody who brought real weapons or severely hurt other concertgoers, although people have doubted how much Scunky actually enforces this rule at concerts.
Another contentious thing about Scunky is his outspoken hatred of many other metal bands. At one concert (before the wall of death bat incident), he even told the crowd to be especially vicious to anyone wearing non-Killerbot band shirts, "and that goes double for any motherf*ckers wearing Metallica or Megadeth shirts. Any subhumans who enjoy that f*cking aural pollution should not be leaving this concert alive and in any matter other than inside a shoebox."
Precious Gems were a pop-rock duo consisting of vocalists D. Larken and B. Hass, Sr. that were active from 1968 to 1976. They used to be a popular group internationally, but nowadays their reputation has fallen beyond salvage in the public eye due to major controversies surrounding both members' various actions.
(TW FOR MENTIONS OF CSA, P3DOPH1LIA, GR00MING, AND CHILD AB*SE PAST THIS POINT. STOP READING IF ANY OF THESE TOPICS TRIGGER YOU.)
(Band AU info before we go on: 1 2 3 4)
The first and arguably most damning controversy surrounds D. Larken's multiple allegations of abducting, keeping and travelling with a harem of young boys/"baby groupies" as young as 10 in some cases. He would often groom these boys (often fans of Precious Gems) into having sexual relationships with him, and even trained them in martial arts and used them basically as assassins, disappearing people who tried to speak up about his abuse. When one of the boys would disobey Larken or attempt to escape, they would often be severely reprimanded and punished, often physically.
D. Larken's most well-known and outspoken victim is Maraich Justinof of Stardust Street, who began speaking up about Larken's abuse in 1984, on the advice of his therapist. Later on, Magic Mainframe's Harold Armstrong would also reveal that he was abused by Larken, and Maraich's bandmate Thatcher Stone revealed that he was almost abducted by Larken, but managed to realize the danger and get away at the last minute. This culminated in a landmark 1985 trial where Justinof, Armstrong, and Maraich's other bandmate Bjorn Hass, Jr., who witnessed much of Larken's abuse as a teenager and came close to being abused by him several times, testified about their abuse to a West German court (Larken's home country). Larken was found guilty on multiple counts of crimes related to child sexual abuse and sentenced to life in prison, where he was killed by his fellow inmates in 1996.
The other controversy surrounding Precious Gems was B. Hass, Sr.'s treatment of his twin sons, Bjorn Jr. and Andersen. Bjorn Jr. would often be separated from his brother for months at a time while Precious Gems toured, causing Andersen to later develop separation anxiety from Bjorn Jr. when the two eventually reunited (and later began playing with Stardust Street). B. Hass, Sr. was also very invested with making Bjorn Jr. a child star, forcing him to do long recording sessions and punishing him for disobedience or repeatedly messing up takes. This controversy eventually led to Precious Gems disbanding, as in 1976, after leaving for university in the UK a year earlier (and inviting Maraich to live and study with him to "save" him from Larken), Bjorn Jr. would write a self-published article about how he was treated by his father, which attracted major media attention and tainted the group's image. B. Hass, Sr. also helped cover up Larken's crimes and failed to intervene most of the time when Larken would try to recruit Bjorn, Jr. into his harem, only getting involved at the absolute last minute if Bjorn, Jr. didn't try to get out of the situation himself. B. Hass, Sr. would be sentenced and imprisoned on child abuse charges in his home country of Sweden in 1978, and later died in 2017.
