if youβre interested in resisting Trumpβs medley of horrors, hereβs some simple ideas:
sign the official White House petition asking him to release his tax returns (it already has enough signatures to require a response from the White House, but the more public support the better - if Trump releases his returns he could become easily impeachable for violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, which basically means heβs not allowed to personally benefit from any foreign powers)
save your congresspeople, senators, and governorβs phone numbers in your contacts, and call them about specific issues - if you have republican reps remind them that they have to serve their entire constituency and articulate your concerns on the issue at hand. If you have democratic reps, tell them you want them to ACTIVELY vote against/resist/speak out about this issue or you will vote for a more progressive dem in the next election. here is a link to find your repβs contact info, here is a link to some sample scripts you could use on the phone, and here is a link to a guide on effectively resisting trumpβs agenda written by former congressional staffers, and hereβsΒ another link to more calling scripts
specific issues I have called my reps about include: the appointment/confirmation of specific Trump staff picks (Sessions/DeVos - the senate has to confirm many of his picks so call them and tell them NOT TO! see this list on NYTimesΒ for more info), the muslim ban, climate change, the wall/immigration, womenβs reproductive rights.
if you are concerned about the environment: go vegan. animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, and - much like how every individual person who participated in the womenβs march contributed to its overall success - your personal decisions can make a difference. Scientists &Β the UNΒ have been saying this for years. (see also: the documentary Cowspiracy which is on Netflix). If youΒ βcanβtβ go vegan right now, at least be a vegetarian. Do it for a month and youβll find itβs easy (and also cheaper than eating meat). I am personally happy to give advice or recommend books/sites/movies/recipes/meal plans.
support the media outlets and scientists that are reporting real facts (not βalternative factsβ) by paying for subscriptions, donating, sharing articles
register to vote/make sure everyone you know is registered to vote NOW & prepared for the midterms in 2018 - all 435 House seats and 33/100 Senate seats will be up for vote in Nov 2018 in addition to most stateβs governorships and other more local positions
pledge to volunteer 306 hours to making your community better over the next 4 years (one hour for every electoral college vote Trump won - this averages to only 1.5 hrs/week), and actually follow through. Look up and choose one or two organizations in your area right now, and send them a message asking how you can volunteer. There are ideas on the 306 hour pledge site as well. this could be anything from political campaigning, volunteering at a food bank or animal shelter, escorting for an abortion clinic, tutoring, local clean-ups, anything that has a positive impact on your community
continue showing up to marches & rallies in your community and in DC
get involved in local politicsΒ - start attendingΒ community board/town hall meetings, and voting in more than just the presidential elections. (also consider running for local office yourself!) Your congresspeople will also attend some of these meetings, so you can more directly voice your concerns here as well. Again, thisΒ guide written by former congressional staffersΒ has useful information on this.
stop spending $$$ at corporations that donβt support your values (this would be companies that directly support Trump/the republican agenda like Chick-fil-A, as well as companies that harm the environment/create unnecessary waste - how about all the plastic/styrofoam garbage created by your favorite fast food or disposable coffee cup habit? just generally before you make a purchase ask yourself if it aligns with your values) and instead donate that $ to the causes you care about (planned parenthood, environmental defense fund, doctors without borders/msf syria, your local food bank, the ACLU, etc.) and/or use that money to subscribe and support real journalism as mentioned above.
make all of these thingsΒ habits - donβt just do them now while youβre angry and worked up and get discouraged after a few more weeks/months of this crap - if you are not actively resisting trumpβs agenda you are letting it happen! Set an alarm/reminder on your phone to call your reps, put local election days/town hall meetings/rallies in your calendar, commit to a volunteer schedule, etc.
also please message me with any more ideas/things youβre doing bc I am trying to become a more active/effective activist & ally
