Spock reached the sickbay within minutes, immediately locating Mallory by the angry shouting coming from behind drawn curtains. Leonard wasn't happy to see him, considering he was trying to treat Mallory, and he glared at Spock until he left them alone.
"What has occurred here?" He demanded however, from the other side of the curtain.
Mallory rolled her eyes at the voice the other side of the curtain, and ignoring the look that the doctor gave her, yanked the curtains open just as McCoy headed back to his office, shaking his head. "I got shot," she said to Spock, gesturing at the wound that was still bleeding, though less profusely than before, "Obviously." She winced as another hypo was pressed into her neck, and stayed still as the doctor continued to work. Mallory raised her eyebrows at Spock, "What did you want? Don't worry, I can work and bleed everywhere at the same time."

At first, Jim couldnât tell if her reaction was because of him looking or the meaning behind him looking, so he looked away, scratching the back of his neck so he could turn his face away. Theyâd been friends for so long⌠he didnât want to ruin that.Â
"You can tackle me anytime" he laughed, following the statement by another swig from the beer- heâd been joking, but secretly wasnât⌠in a way. Jim did a great job of making his personal life complicated. This was just another example. "If you did that in heels, itâd be even more impressive, yâknow."
Gently, he leaned against the wall next to the liquor table, arms crossed leisurely over his chest, the beer bottle in the crook of his elbow. Jim smiled, laughing a little. âHey, you deserved that promotion⌠and no one else has done your job better. Iâm glad you like it.â
Mallory snorted, shaking her head with a slightly exasperated smile on her face. She followed his movement, taking another long drink of beer and then rolled her eyes at his next comment. She had never seen the point of high heels. "If you can get me into a pair of heels, I'd be really impressed," she told him, "And ordering me to just because you're my Captain does not count. That would be cheating." She pulled a face as the music got slightly louder and people began to shuffle onto the makeshift dance-floor. Along with most things that didn't involve punching something in the face, dancing was not an area in which Mallory was experienced. At all. "Still," she said, "Thanks, Jim. I know it was you." Jim of all people was understanding. While he had never asked about her past, and she'd never asked about his, there had developed a mutual understanding of how fucked up they both were. And she had needed this, needed the confidence boost - hell, needed her time to be taken up by something she enjoyed.

Spock immediately blinked in surprised. He hadn't heard tell of there being an injury to one of the commanding officers, and given her new role, Mallory certainly fit that criteria.
"Lieutenant Commander, I was simply seeking your whereabouts." He said. "I shall make my way to the sickbay immediately."
With that he ended the call before she could respond. The woman had sounded, understandably, irritated and in pain and Spock wanted to find out exactly what had happened so he could take the necessary steps to dealing with it. For a moment the weapon proficiency tests had been forgotten.
Mallory opened her mouth to argue but he had already hung up. Cursing colourfully under her breath, she tossed the communicator to one side and laid relatively still as the Doctor worked on her injury. There was a lot of blood, but that wasn't exactly anything new to Mallory. It wouldn't be too hard to stitch her up, but it was going to hurt like a bitch for days. She wondered what the chances were of persuading the doctor to let her stay on active duty - probably not bad, but with Commander Spock there, there wasn't a hope in hell of managing to wriggle out of being put off-duty for a few days. She flinched as another stab of pain went up her side, and decided to lie still.

The Vulcan nodded once. "Very good." And he left her alone.
It was sometime before Spock came across Mallory again. For the next few days his shift and his duties didn't coincide with hers until Jim asked him for an update on the weapons proficiency test. Spock left the bridge immediately, heading towards the gym, as that was usually where the woman could be located.
When he got there however she was no where in sight, causing Spock to frown a little, and so he pulled out his communicator.
"Lieutenant Commander Palmer?"
Mallory rolled her eyes and flipped open her communicator, ignoring the pointed glare of the doctor who was treating her. Shit, she had been stabbed, shot and otherwise injured enough times for it not to bother her so much anymore. Still, her voice was rather strained as she replied. "What?" And she knew it wasn't Spock's fault she had a rather large hole in her side, but it made a girl understandably irritable. She hissed as hypo was jabbed into her neck, and then swore loudly as the doctor prodded the wound. "Fuck, do you have to poke it?" she snapped, and then returned her attention to the Commander, "What do you want?"

Spock didn't notice Mallory until he had finished eating and was heading out of the mess hall, and as soon as he saw her he wondered whether he should apologise for his hurried departure earlier. It was only polite, he decided. Spock halted a few paces from Mallory's table and straightened his posture, clearing his throat.
"How goes your tasks of today, Lieutenant Commander Palmer?" He asked formally, despite the fact neither of them were on duty.
Mallory raised one eyebrow at his formal tone, but didn't comment, instead resting her PADD in her lap and raising her eyes to meet his. While she doubted she would get an explanation for his sudden exit earlier, she was kind of...pleased that he was choosing to talk to her. She felt she had more than earned his respect. "Good," she replied, tapping the PADD, "I was only on duty for one shift so I've been catching up with some paperwork." Not that there had actually been any paper involved but the saying had somehow managed to stick. She assumed Spock wouldn't use it considering it was inaccurate. A very small smile hovered at the edge of her lips at the thought.

Jim tried not to be too obvious while looking Mallory over- he knew that it was a rarity she ever dressed up⌠and she looked wonderful. âIâll gladly buy you drinks if you dress like this more often. Mal, you look great" he smiled, the expression entirely genuine as he reached and uncapped a beer of his own.Â
"Itâs not like youâre gonna have to tackle someone to the ground tonight⌠that dress suits you" he added, as an after thought. He tried not to seem to clingy, but Jim loved being around Mallory. The two of them had been friends in the Academy, and he trusted her. He loved being around her. They just meshed.Â
After taking a longer swig from the bottle in his hands, he looked over. âSo, besides having to wear a dress, how are you Mal? I havenât actually seen you in.. ages.â
Mallory clenched her jaw a little in an attempt to stop the ridiculous blushing from darkening her cheeks, and she took a rather enthusiastic gulp of her beer to try and cover her reaction. She wasn't used to anyone actively acknowledging the fact that she was a woman - generally she felt like one of the boys, and had no objection to that at all. It wasn't that she didn't like the way Jim was looking at her - it was that she had no fucking clue as to how to react to it. "Not unless the party gets really messy," she snorted, "In which case, I'll leave the tackling to you. I'm just glad I managed to escape before Nyota found me some high heels to wear." Though the way Jim looked at her in her dress was new, nothing else was. They had been friends for years, and she found talking to him easy - and hell, he was a damn good Captain too. "I'm good," she nudged him in the ribs with her elbow, "You promoted me so I'm all kinds of busy now. It's great though, I love it." Mallory's eyes shone with an unspoken thanks - while Jim wasn't the only person involved in her step up to Security Chief, she knew it was mainly his praise that had gotten her the job.

Jim hadnât thought the idea of the party though- he knew the crews morale was low, since the Enterprise wouldnât be back for Christmas. And the only thing he could think of was throwing some sort of celebration. Of course, it all seemed easy at first⌠then it snowballed into something huge and complicated, and he wasnât sure he even wanted to go anymore.
But heâd planned it, so he had to.
Plus, there was one perk to this⌠heâd be able to see Mallory again. Itâd been a while since theyâd talked, and Jimâs stomach got all tight and anxious when he saw her⌠he quite liked her. So heâd gotten a little dressed up for the occasion, finding Mallory soon enough and strolling over, bumping her hip with his playfully.Â
"Hey, stranger⌠long time no see, huh?"
Mallory glanced to the side at the voice, giving Jim a wide grin and instantly relaxing a little. While most people were put off by her bluntness and lack of tact, Jim had simply embraced it and she was pretty sure he just found it amusing. But then, he had managed to befriend Spock and Doctor McCoy, and Mallory didn't consider herself anywhere near as bad as those two. "Hi, Jim," she smiled, taking a drink of beer and raising an eyebrow, "Nice party. But you owe me a drink, considering I had to wear a dress. I don't do dresses." She tugged on the hem of said dress, though thankfully it wasn't too short. But for a woman who spent 99% of her time in trousers, she felt rather uncomfortable with her legs out and hell, it was impractical anyway. She was a Security Chief, and while she probably could fight in a dress, she wasn't exactly anxious to try it.

Spock returned to his room and back to his book, but he didn't read it anymore. He also didn't meet with Jim for dinner. It amazed him how swiftly one's emotions could change, even his own. He had been too absorbed with concentrating on the simulation that he had momentarily lowered his mental shields, only to become embarrassed. It was disgraceful.
He didn't reappear from his room until well into the night, with the hope that the mess hall would be pretty much empty but for those who had not long finished Beta shift, and luckily there were only a few others in there. Spock collected for himself a light pasta dish and moved over to a corner of the room to eat.
Mallory had stretched out to take up several chairs, now drinking a hot chocolate as she went over some security data that needed sorting. It was most likely a glitch, but knowing the Enterprise's constant ability to get into trouble, she wasn't happy just leaving it to chance. She barely looked up as someone else entered, but once she realised who it was, she pondered calling over to him. She had never been very good at friends. She had a few, sure, but making new ones required tact and politeness that just didn't come naturally to her. There was a reason she was usually told to stay quiet on diplomatic missions, after all. And shit, Spock would require even more care to befriend since he was half Vulcan as well. So, Mallory continued to drink her hot chocolate, peeking over the top of her PADD at Spock and wondering what he was doing up so late.

"I am cleared for duty?" Spock perked an eyebrow, once again clasping his hands behind his back. "Is there anything else I may be of assistance with?"
He noted a strange look in Mallory's eyes but chose not to question it, but shuffled a little under her gaze. He also noticed at that point that the engineers from before had at some point returned to watch his performance, along with several other crew members. Spock flinched a little and lowered his gaze to the floor.
"If you require my assistance, I shall be in my quarters." And he left before anyone could speak.
Mallory was slightly taken aback by his abrupt exit, opening her mouth to speak and not even managing to formulate a sentence before he had left. She assumed it was the scrutiny of the two engineers that he objected to, but shit, she had no idea when it came to Spock. He might not have been all alien, but he was a hard guy to read. Giving the pair a pointed glare, Mallory stalked from the room and towards the mess hall, stomach beginning to rumble. She had a habit of forgetting to eat now that she was so busy, and the idea of food was one she definitely wanted to sort out. She usually ended up sitting alone - while she had friends, they were often on different shifts from her, and her slightly aggressive manner usually meant that people gave her a wide berth. Rolling her eyes, she grabbed a replicated sandwich and sat at the end of one of the emptier tables - not content in her solitude, but more than used to it.

Spock watched her with interest as she explained the phaser to him, trying to resist the urge to comment on the fact he already knew everything, understanding that she was only doing his job. He had never seen Mallory in action before and Spock found himself very much enchanted by the way she hit every target, by the fluid way she moved, and when it was his turn he found it took a few moments to compose himself.
"You are quite the marksman. Woman." He corrected himself with a small nod. "I have heard tale or your extraordinary skills, although I had yet to witness them."
He took up a stance of his own then and repeated the simulation, without even breaking a sweat, and to 100%, and Spock then realised with a blush that he may have been trying to show off a little. Immediately he straightened his posture and rearranged his expression, turning to Mallory.
Mallory couldn't help looking slightly impressed at his skill - considering Vulcans were pacifists and all...but only due to the bloody history of their race. At his praise, an eyebrow lifted, as did one corner of her mouth into a half smile. "Cheers," she said, taking the phaser from him and putting it back, "You're not so bad yourself." It was good to hear that her skills were getting recognition as well as her rather impressive temper - the former of which she would prefer her superiors were hearing about, the former not so much. But still, that was a name to tick from her list and watching him shoot had been...entertaining. Mallory idly wondered why Starfleet insisted the regulation trousers were so damn tight.
