In regards to my therianthropic identity, Iâve been âawakenedâ since 2016 at the earliest, but acutely aware all my life. However, I didnât start being active within the community up until just a couple years ago, finding my theriotype early 2021.
Iâm not looking for a debate about my zoo identity. If you take issue with it, your block button is free to use. Believe me, itâs better for your mental health. I have a number of hobbies and interests, some of which include dogs (general training, sport, and nutrition fixation), drawing, furry fandom, games (both video and table top), hiking, camping, gardening, and learning as a whole. It's not that I think attraction to animals is Evil, attraction alone is completely morally neutral. What is iffy to me is that you specifically identify as "zoosexual," a community that is explicitly full of actual animal abusers.
You can just say "zoophile." It's a paraphilia, that's just what it's called.
This isnât the type of thing I intend to respond to, buuut this is a good opportunity to clear up some inaccuracies.
1) Zoosexual is a label I am more comfortable with. Just like how Iâm more comfortable with calling myself âgayâ rather than âqueerâ. It does not mean I am sexually active with nonhumans, that would be an assumption made entirely on your part. Exactly like how me being homosexual doesnât mean I am sexually active with men. It simply designates whom I find attractive. Which, as youâve said yourself, is âcompletely morally neutralâ.
Would you be surprised to learn that people who label themselves as âzoophilesâ are as equally capable of having interspecies sex as I am, despite using a different label? Jarring, I know.
2) The zoosexual community isnât âfull ofâ abusers, just like the LGBT+ community isnât full of abusers. There will always be bad apples within any given community. But generalizing based upon your own inner dislike for us, or for our labels, is a problem you need to deal with on your own. Once again, as stated above, âzoosexualâ does not indicate sexual activity between human and nonhuman, if itâs that sexual activity is what you would consider to be abuse. Are zoosexuals capable of having sex with animals? Yes. But so are non zoos.
3) A paraphilia, by todayâs definition, means âan abnormal sexual arousal to something that is otherwise nonsexual or socially unacceptableâ. SoooâŚdoes that mean homosexuality is a paraphilia? Hell, letâs not forget heterosexuality, since humans themselves are not inherently sexual, aligning more with the modern definition! OrâŚdoes âabnormalâ and âunacceptableâ just mean anything you canât seem to wrap your head around? Hmm⌠I feel like Iâve heard about this somewhere before.
Ooh, and letâs not forget the whole reason âparaphiliaâ was coined! Originally meant to describe any sexual behavior that did not benefit procreation, specifically used as a method to medicalize (and further demonize) homosexuality. Truly feels like history is repeating itself.
4) If you yourself are not apart of this community, you do not get to dictate the words we use and what they mean to us. You can not look in from an outside perspective and make up rules for people that you do not understand, or will not take the time to understand. Yes, I could call myself a zoophile. Many zoos do. Will I? No. I wonât. And if that is a personal choice that offends or otherwise makes you uncomfortable, it really isnât my problem.
Me being zoosexual does not hurt anyone. Want to know why?
Because me being a zoo is purely thought-based. There is no action involved in being a zoo. Hell, itâs not even illegal, unlike many people love to claim. And just like how you canât punish someone for fantasizing about murder, you canât punish someone for finding a wolf or horse romantically or sexually appealing. A crime was not committed by feeling. Thought crimes do not exist.
Now, I will never deny that there are zoosexuals who choose to have sexual relations with nonhuman creatures at their own discretion. But I will also not stand here and say that every single zoo is active. There are multitudes of reasons someone may choose to be non practicing, from being asexual, to even being in committed relationships with a human (or humans). An open admittance to being a zoo is not an open invitation to harass someone for abuse.
This being said, you are allowed to not like us. You are allowed to not accept us. Just like we are allowed to live and be happy as we are. You do not have the authority to demand we change ourselves to better fit your tiny ideation of societal normality.
