The librarian unlocked the doors to the library and put a doorstopper in them. He dusted off his desk and sat down, waiting for customers whole he read some random return he found on his desk.
Nalu shifted his bag on his shoulder a bit, taking time to look around the library a bit as he entered. Books upon books upon books…. He resisted the urge to go straight to the suspense section and instead strolled up to the librarian’s desk. He had a job to do, best not get distracted now.
“Ah, hello there, good morning to you. You wouldn’t happen to have these books in your wares?” The books consisted of how to care for exotic lilies and two different books on exotic and rare grasses.
@skittles-simp
Mocosa leaned over and peered at the back of the library.
“Follow me. Non-fiction is in the back, so it should be back there!” He gestured towards the back and began walking.
“Whats your name?” He struck up a conversation, knowing it’s going to be a while before he finds the right books. Listen, he may be the librarian, but his memory sucked. Especially since he got his lights knocked out by that government guy. He was also a horrible organizer, the last name sorting being pretty inaccurate.
Nalu nodded, but held back a groan. Nonfiction.. at least he won’t be staying around most of it for long, just the plant books. “My name?” He asked, confusion lacing his voice before remembering what was asked. “Ah right! My name is Nalu Keahi, but you can just call me Nalu!” Nalu followed behind the librarian closely. “If you don’t mind me asking, what’s yours?”
“My names Mocosa! Thought I might start a conversation since it may take a moment to find the books, and silence is… awkward. How’ve you been?”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mocosa! Ah, and that makes sense. I’ve been good, just taking care of plants, the usual. I love my plants, but it’s nice to come back to reality for human interaction every now and then, haha. And what of you? I can imagine you occasionally get oddballs here at the library?”
“You’d be surprised- I’ve had several cases where people have come in and take the whole bowl of sucker free samples because its free and they assume they’re entitled to sweet sweet sucker compensation because they had to pay for a book three years ago.” He snorted and began to sort through the first panel of books.
“Thats not even as bad as it can get, its rediculous.”
“Oh??” He chuckled a bit, not quite expecting that one. He relaxed a bit though, comfortable with the air around them. “Well, I can assure you that I will leave the suckers for other patrons in that case.” He smiled, glancing around at the rows and rows of books. Nonfiction… as long as he didn’t have to go past too many of the history books, he’ll be fine.
“So,” he started, trying for a new topic, “what types of books do you like best?”
“I wont lie, I’m a bit of a sucker for romance books. Fiction is fine, but non-fiction reminds me i might not be a lost cause.” He chuckled, shuffling through the books.
“What do you need the books for?”
“Ah, we recently got a delivery of seeds and bulbs for these rare lilies and grasses, and I wanted to touch up on my knowledge of how to care for them. I’m surprised the government was able to find these actually. I don’t really ask questions though, I just raise and care for what they tell me to care for.”
“Did you know that those greenhouses have all sorts of plants that you can’t find anywhere else? We even have brugmansias! Er—angel’s trumpets, if that name sounds more familiar?”
“… Angels trumpet? Doesn’t ring a bell unfortunately. And you said you worked with the government?” He bit back a sharp tone as he looked through the books. His head still hurt from his last encounter. He’s gonna be, to put it nicely, salty, for a while.
“Yes, yes! The government was kind enough to allow me my position in taking care of the greenhouses. It’s honestly been a dream of mine to work for something like that.” He paused, not seeming to notice the apparent growing tension in the air.
“And Angel’s Trumpets are quiet the specimen! They’re extremely toxic, considered to be one of the most toxic of ornamental plants. They’re actually a part of the nightshade family! Ah—” he grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Apologies, habit. Once I get going, I can’t stop!..” He shook his head, readjusting his glasses.
He bit his lip a little, nodding along to the others rambling. He squinted his eyes and continued searching. “Nightshade you say? Doesnt that include tomatoes?” He continued the conversation, not wanting to think about sour thoughts.
“Ah yes!” Nalu beamed, raising his gloved hand and brandishing his pointer finger in a bit of an ‘aha’ pose. “As well as potatoes and eggplants, actually! They’re all grouped together because of the alkaloids they all have. Tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants have low numbers of alkaloids which is why they’re safe for eating, whereas you should never eat an Angel’s Trumpet. In fact, even touching one is deadly… you have to grow them with extreme care!” He paused, seeming to be thinking for a moment before adorning a sheepish expression. “Ah, but don’t worry!! I haven’t touched them with these gloves, so you don’t need to worry!”
“Do you need any help finding the book?” Nalu offered, peering through the shelves. So many books… no wonder Mocosa was having a hard time finding it.
“I, uh-“He looked up, peering at the lengths of books above his head.
“It’s probably up there, hold on.” He ran and grabbed a rope that pulled a ladder from the end of the isle to him, he climbed up and began searching. He signaled Nalu to keep looking.
“So… they are deadly to touch?”
He nodded, watching Mocosa search. “Extremely so. Every part of the plant is poisonous, and touching them can result in numerous things, like dryness of the mouth, fevers, hallucinations, paralyzation, even death, if you’re not careful.
“Such beautiful plants, yet they’re shunned because of how deadly they are. They have the most gorgeous shape too.. but alas, beauty must be appreciated from afar, just like the Toxicodendron radican’s vibrant red leaves in the fall that leave rashes where you touch it… or the elegant Convallaria majalis, which is beautiful to look at, but rated in the most poisonous category of plants when consumed.”
Nalu sighed, adjusting his glasses. Despite talking about such a… morbid topic, he seemed at peace. He adjusted his sweater sleeves, finding he couldn’t find a comfortable position for them to be in as he continued to scan the shelves on the ground next to Mocosa’s ladder.
He snorted.
“So its like the worlds deadliest LSD?” He joked, making his way across the isle. Oh!
“Aha- i got it! Hold on let me get down.” He jumped down- rather than climb- and handed out his hand with the book in it. He couldnt quite make eye contact, but he put on a little smile.
