MAKS THE FOX

Less than two weeks ago, we called a New Orleans band named Tank and the Bangas. We told them they won the Tiny Desk Contest. In the days since, their entry video has hit over 8 million views on Facebook, and their album Think Tank made it onto the iTunes charts. At 10:59 a.m. ET on Monday, Tank and the Bangas landed in Washington, D.C. to tape their Tiny Desk concert. We were waiting for them in the airport with their name on a sign when a complete stranger asked if we were with the band. “I saw their video go viral last week,” she explained. She was immediately a fan.

When the band arrived, they brought the explosive, joyful energy of a band on the brink — a band whose life today was unimaginable two weeks ago. Then, they filmed their Tiny Desk.

It was something to behold. This band won the Contest with a joyfully irreverent, fast-paced song, but their concert displayed a sweeping range of emotion. By the end, some of our coworkers were openly crying. We have seen a lot of musicians come through this office — people who are really seasoned performers. Tank and the Bangas matched and even exceeded the kind of things we have seen from those artists. The office was buzzing with their energy all day.

We can’t wait to share the concert with you this Friday morning. And then, soon after, we’ll announce tour dates featuring local bands. This adventure is just beginning. We feel lucky we get to bring you along on it.
