I must change my life so that I can live it, not wait for it.
— Susan Sontag, Reborn: Journals and Notebooks, 1947-1964
sometimes, you have to remind yourself that social media doesn't hold the entire reality. there is a world outside internet. while the internet may provide some sense of community and belonging when the physical world fails to provide it, remind yourself not to get lost in the virtual world. you are a person first before you are a user of any platform. live, touch some grass, detach.
I need to give you a warning as your girlfriend. I’m going to share everything that’s yours. Your sadness, delight, happiness, despair. Everything. So… don’t hide because things are tough. Make sure to leave my share. If you don’t lean on me, I’ll be lonely.

I’m so embarrassed to have to type this out but this is the last place I can turn for the support of my friends and community. I’m a struggling Latina lesbian trying to make my way in the world, and with COVID19 my financial situation deteriorated until I was forced to move back in with my parents.
A few nights ago a person I once considered a friend outed me to my parents because he was upset I rejected his romantic advances. Upon finding out my parents decided to kick me out, and I’ve had to stay with a friend. Now that she can no longer house me, I’m trying to find an apartment and need help staying at a motel and paying for food and gas.
I just need a few hundred dollars to cover the cost of living until I get my next pay cheque and find a place to lease. If you want to help a struggling sapphic Latina, my paypal is paypal.me/ant0nella
I know everyone is going through tough times, but please if you cannot donate just signal boost. I have faith in my friends and found family here.
Gotta make room for new mistakes in 2021!
note to self
you're gonna be happy and content with life. you're not gonna measure your happiness and contentment on numbers and status. you are gonna be genuinely happy living your life and being yourself not because they told you to but because you just are. it'll take some time, fuck it may take your whole life but that's fine. you know this isn't a race, you know that. you just have to remind yourself every now and then.
and on days where everything seems dark and gloomy, you're gonna be fine. you're not afraid of the dark. not because you're used to it but because there's nothing to be afraid of because you can always, always do something. you are in control of your life. you can learn from it, enjoy it, or just be there. let go if you must or leave. it's fine. it's fine, self. i swear it's gonna be fine.
lastly, im rooting for you. i love you.

Writing does not have to be realistic
Writing does not have to be realistic
Writing does not have to be realistic
Oh my god, I’ve seen this so much recently and it’s killing me. Posts that talk about how extreme shows of emotion don’t happen constantly, how fight scenes should never take more than a minute, how nobody notices the exact color of someone’s eyes the first time they meet. And yes, while true irl, you don’t have to write “realistically” if you don’t want to. Not only is expecting this form of realism stifling to a lot of writing styles and genres, but, um, hello we are making art, people! Art! Where exaggeration and aesthetic are at their best and often greatly add to whatever you’re creating.
You want your characters to throw themselves to the ground and sob? To leap and clap their hands from joy and excitement? Do it!!!! Fight scenes that take pages and involve the most ridiculous, outlandish weapons, and have the characters twirl and spin and leap and call out witty banter? Fucking go for it, my guy! You want your character to observe “the gorgeous, ever changing, shifting green hues” of their love interest’s eyes the first time they meet? Hell yeah, baby!
Look, all I’m saying, is that if realism takes away from your writing, if it feels confining and suffocating, then don’t do it! Nothing has to be realistic if you don’t want it to be. Again, we’re talking about art here. Go all out! Be ridiculous and outlandish! Don’t let other’s demand for realism destroy the story you’ve crafted
This.
Look, it’s fun sometimes to take apart the tropes and “mythbuster” your way through them, but that is itself a form of entertainment. It’s not meant to be instructive about how to create art.
For god’s sake, the reason we tell stories is so we can engage the imagination. It’s so we can fantasize and romanticize and theorize and wonder for a little while just what it would be like if the world worked a certain way.
Though writing is a discipline and has rules to follow, never be confined by these rules. Study the rules and break them. You are an artist. Your art is up to your imagination and creativity. You are in control. Never forget that.

i know the new year won’t magically erase everything bad happening in the world but i hope 2021 is kinder to you all and that it brings brighter moments and healing
Do you think Suzanne Collins had Gale partially responsible for Prim’s death only so that people would ship Everlark and not Galeniss at the end?
To be honest no. You have to remember something about Suzanne Collins that while writing Mockingjay she was influenced by the global events going on. It hurts to say that she had already written Prim's death from the moment she was picked to be a tribute for the Hunger Games.
But when you think about it Prim was also selected to be in that group of medics who were going to run into the fray.
Why was a 14-year-old girl doing at the front lines of the war? Front line. You have to ask yourself that question.
Because to a political leader who wants control, what better way to clip the wings or annihilate any resistance, by putting the one thing she knows can devistate her opponent, her 14-year-old sister innthe line of fire.
Also destroying sister creates an automatic rift between two friends. Friends that can potentially take Coin Down. Prim became nothing but collateral damage.
I imagined Gale as another piece of collateral collateral damage in the war. He's a boy who's filled with rage and has distrust for the System he grew up in. The type of guy who can easily be brainwashed into believing something. A cause. He was the polar opposite of an argument. Colin’s herself said that Gale and Peeta represented opposite sides of an argument. They both had a hijacking in a way. Peeta was hijacked by the capitol and Gale was hijacked by the rebellion.
Gale unfortunately was sucked into that world because he wanted to do something against what he's thought was a bigger evil. Imagine the moment he realized that he was tricked and deceived and manipulated...that he'd become the very same thing he fought against. That's devastating. Gale had become fire and destruction. It's why I imagine he quietly wrote himself out of Katniss life. It would be the only honorable thing for Gale Hawthorne to do.
To be honest if you read the books without the media presence of the triangle... the myth that all "YA dystopian novels have to have a love triangle" and read each character for what they are. You'll see that both boys are two sides to an argument. In the end, it's almost like Katniss chose the side of the argument that made most sense for to her to be able to survive.
"That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. "
I guess that's the most intimate question that a person needs to ask themselves, and it's really an honest question, what do you need to survive?
Do I need to be in a loveless marriage or a relationship to be happy? Do I need that extra pair of shoes? Whatever it is, The Hunger Games is more than just a YA story. It poses a lot of questions deeply hiden in the text.
So to answer your question. No, I don't think Suzanne Collins wrote Prims death as a way to imbolize Galeniss shippers. I think she wrote Prim's death as a way to say war is pointless. And the truth, always lies between the history of the victor and the history of the losers.
