Elaan, the Dohlman of the Elasian Empire, comes from an agressive culture. Against her will, she been betrothed to the ruler of the Troyian Empire, and the Enterprise has the dubious honor of transporting her to her new home planet. Elaan tries to stop the wedding with threats and tantrums, but when Kirk resists her bullying, she tries a new tactic. Using a special Elasian technique, Elaan causes Kirk to fall in love with her, hoping that he will use his influence to stop the wedding. But Elaan soon finds out that she is the one falling under Kirk’s spell.

Deela is Queen of the Scalosians, an advanced race of people who managed to develop hyper-acceleration, so they exist and move at a rate so fast that they appear invisible to others. The downside is that this causes sterility in Scalosian males. Deela and her comrades take over the Enterprise and plan to use its crew as a source of new breeding material. Despite his protestations, Deela makes Kirk her first concubine.

Rayna lives on a planet alone with her caretaker, Flint. With little to do besides study, the extraordinarily bright Rayna has an intelligence that impresses even Spock. Kirk is quickly smitten with the graceful Rayna, and tries to encourage her to leave her sheltered, lonely existence on the planet. Flint is not happy with this, and the two men soon get in a fight over who knows best for Rayna. But Rayna refuses to be ordered by either of them.
