THE STORY OF O-JAY Z: An Emcees Assessment of 4:44
by Wise Intelligent
OK, JAY Z has always been, IMO, one of the dopest writers/emcees to ever pick up a pen. Heās ALWAYS been that dope to me, and has never released an entirely āwackā album. I am a fan (of a lot of emcees). Sometimes Iām a satisfied fan, and still some other times a disappointed fan, and critical from that vantage point - but NEVER a āhater.ā
THAT SAID, Iāve listened to the new 4:44 album. I thought it was dope (in a Hip Hop way). I tried to go into it without the influence of other peopleās opinions of the album weighing too heavily on my own. Firstly, the tracks I liked most were/are - Kill Jay Z, Caught The Eye, and 4:44. I found the album in its totality to be the same braggadocious Jay Z just from the vantage point of a more experienced 47 year old. I mean at his age, if you canāt part some wisdom gained from past experience you shouldnāt say shit in the first place. its like Chuck D said āAt my age if I canāt teach, I shouldnāt even open my mouth to speak.ā
I WOULDNāT CALL IT, as many have, a āWOKEā album. I know for some, songs like āThe Story of O.J.ā played a part in helping them formulateĀ that opinion of the album. As well as referring to himself as Nat Turner, and suggesting the rich white and powerful are going to kill him for saying ātoo much.ā However, I donāt think he said much. He invoked Lauryn Hill as an example, but Lauryn challenged the Pope on pedophilia in the Catholic Church - AT THE VATICAN on CHRISTMAS!!! She denounced American capitalism before a federal judge. Lauryn courageously peeled the skin off of white racism, police terrorism and the oppression of black people and women LIVE ON MTV UnPlugged. She literally forfeited the commercial lime, deliberately and conscientiously, because the lifestyles of the ārich & famousā did not bode well with her psychosocial, psychospiritual and or political orientation. 4:44 couldnāt have been a skit in that reality.
APART FROM the recordings that addressed his personal life in detail the album was Jay Z, i.e., dope, witty, clear and lyrically unparrelled as he always is. As far as the āWOKE(NESS)ā he didnāt expound on anything he hasnāt peppered his schemes with in previous offerings. Heās always had, and occasionally invoked, the knowledge he displayed on this album in his past works. Heās never been stupid, or oblivious to the racial politics of the USA. Many black people not considered āwokeā are aware of the racism they face day in and day out in this white power-structure, its hard not to be.
FOR THE RECORD, in this assessment of the record I intentionally avoided going in on the several, usual, on time and on schedule contradictions, like say - the billionaire āfield niggaā with maids, butlers and no underground railroadĀ or Baconās Rebellion to free other āfield niggersā (his being black stopped that comparison just short of a Bill Maher moment) -Ā almost suggesting that the acquisition of wealth by an individual in this oppressive system is black liberation, and orĀ ācollectivelyā surmounting this racialized, antiblack power-structure is as simple as having ācreditā after all thatās how āthe Jews did itā (but did they?)
I chose not to point out how the album - like all Jay-Z albums is rooted in economic determinism as the ONLY measure by which to interpret the world; and or how the album does not seem to address racism from the vantage point of an entire people vs an entire antiblack power-structure, rather on the individual & personal level only.
In my assessment of the album I decided to let the incredible emcee that Jay Z is - live, and not diminish that by addressing what many of us know Jay Z is not, and has not been - by deliberate, conscious and intentional choice, and not because of ignorance nor āsleep.ā That being - a BLACK NATIONALIST!
IN CONCLUSION its a dope ass album! No I.D. delivered. Jay Z delivered as he does more often than he does not. But for me, if the album strikes you as āWOKEā, either youāve awaken in the second level, second phase sleep in the same dream (ala inception), or Iāve altogether never understood what it means to be woke? In short, I thoroughly enjoyed the albumā¦

The French state is committing legalised sexual assault in public, in broad daylight, and calling it freedom.
Whatās happening in France now is so disgusting Iām almost lost for words. But for anyone who is shocked at this behaviour, who wonders how the French state can do this and still call itself liberal, indeed commit these acts of assault in the name of liberalism, I would respond that the French authorities are being truer than ever to the European liberal legacy, which was always racist, always tied up with the colonial project, always demeaning, dehumanising, sexist, classist. But even so - call me naive, but I did not expect to see in the 21st century French policemen forcing women to strip in public, under the threat of legal punishment simply for wearing clothes that cover the whole body.
This afternoon I went and sat on the beach for an hour (in the south of England). Wearing an ankle-length dress (underneath which one could potentially hide several firearms or explosive devices), a long-sleeved cardigan, and a (tacky) sunhat (with a kangaroo on it). It was around 30 degrees and sunny. When itās sunny and hot, I prefer to cover up, as I donāt want to get burnt. But also, Iām not comfortable showing a lot of bare skin in public anymore. Maybe itās part of getting older, I donāt know. I just prefer my arms and legs to be covered. Thatās a personal, private choice. As it should be. I donāt give a fuck about the arms and legs of other people. I couldnāt care less if everyone else on that beach was completely naked. As I sat there, I thought about what the French authorities are doing to women. Well, not all women. Women who do not fit the Western norm, that is the always sexualised woman who dresses to please the male gaze. So liberal. So empowered. Anyway, it was difficult not to think about this, when sitting there, fully clothed, surrounded by people with very varying degrees of clothing: some with more clothes than me, some with only a few sewn-together triangles of fabric. I tried to imagine male officers patrolling the beach, stopping to tell some women to take their clothes off. Telling me to take my clothes off. There is a strong and immediate association here with prisons and labour camps and concentration camps, with total power over the bodies of others. I shuddered and felt cold, despite the sweltering heat.Ā
And yet, had I been sitting on a beach in the south of France, in an ankle-length skirt, long-sleeved cardigan, and an old sunhat from the Grampians national park in Australia, I would, presumably, not have been forced to strip. Even if Iād been wearing a hooded wetsuit I probably wouldnāt have been forced to strip, unless the wetsuit was mistaken for a burkini. Which of course would never happen since there is no similarity between the two whatsoever.Ā
Q: Whatās the difference between a wetsuit and a burkini? A: European racism.
As others have pointed out, this is about both race and class, as well as gender. All are significant factors here, which need to be identified, critiqued, called out. But itās important to remember how central sex is to all three, in many ways itās what ties them together. The European neocolonial project is a project of modernity, with biologised sex and sexualisation of bodies at its core. As Iāve argued elsewhere, the biggest threat to modern patriarchy is not the overly sexual woman (the wild exotic other, or the promiscuous madwoman, or the whore) but the woman who does not fit the stereotype for what isĀ āfemaleā and sexual in a Western heteronormative context. It follows from this that the exotic other is not so exotic if the white European male cannot see her body at all. The female body completely covered is not sexualised enough, but conversely neither is the female body completely naked - or rather, the latter is the wrong kind of sexual: ungroomed, offensive, unapologetic, much like female body hair is offensive and unapologetic. That is a huge factor in the policing of womenās clothing, whether to cover them up or undress them - the aim is for the female body to always suggest the promise of sex to the heterosexual male.Ā
Earlier today, before sitting on the beach fully dressed, I was walking down the street fully dressed (minus tacky sunhat), and passed two men walking in the opposite direction, both of whom were shirtless. And I thought (as I always do when I see men with bare upper bodies in public), if I took off my top and bra and walked down the street, best case scenario people would stare and laugh and men would shout things after me, worst case scenario Iād get sectioned or arrested.
This is not the most coherent or eloquent post, just the thoughts that emerged today.Ā Seeing the images of male French police officers standing over a woman, forcing her to undress or face legal ramifications, itās hard to express, to put words to, all the things Iām feeling and thinking. This is an overt and extreme manifestation of the violence and oppression always present in the white, European, male, Christian colonial project. Calling it hypocritical is not just the understatement of the century, itās also untrue. Itās not hypocritical, itās consistent with the ideology it represents. And it is disgusting, horrific, offensive.Ā
when white people can watch real videos of innocent black men, women and children being shot and killed and still find a way to blame the victims, then you need to realize something: these people do not see you as human. like racism is obviously one thing but not only do they not see you as an equal, they literally see you less than a human being. less dignified. less worthy. just less.
and that mentality is so fucking dangerous. thatās the mentality that accepted and allowed for slavery to happen. it permitted the mass genocide of millions of brown, black, aboriginal, etc people. itās what allowed them to kidnap and murder black slaves. itās what allowed them to lynch black people and watch it with their kids as entertainment. itās what allowed them to bury aboriginal babies in the ground and kick their heads for sport. itās what allowed them to tie brown people to the mouths of canons and then fire those canons. itās what helped them be okay with not helping brown people in famine countries.
and these people who fucking see police brutality live on video and all the evidence before their eyes and they find a way to support the police, those are the exact types of people who let all of history happen. Their comments are not harmless. their comments and the system they support get you killed. get us killed.
they do not see us as equals. they do not see us as humans. and these same people are the ones in charge of us???!?!?!? THEY WILL MURDER US AND NO ONE WILL BE THERE TO SAY OUR NAME. NO ONE WILL BE THERE TO STAND FOR JUSTICE. BECAUSE THESE RACIST FUCKERS AND THE SYSTEM THEY SUPPORT IS OUT TO KILL US.
THEY. ARE. OKAY. WITH. YOUR. MURDER.
They are okay with your little baby brother being murdered. They are okay with your father being shot and killed. They are okay with your mother being murdered. Anyone you love can die and they will be okay with it You mean nothing to the system or them. AND WE CAN NO LONGER LET THIS HAPPEN.
They can watch a video of a 15 year old boy sobbing at the murder of his father and still find a way to sympathize with his killers. They will feel more pain watching a fucking dog in pain than another human being of a different skin colour in pain.
There were 4 terrorist attacks in 4 Muslim countries in the last week and not a word from anyone. When Paris was attacked all hell broke loose. Fucking 200 people were killed in Iraq and no one gave a shit. TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE. THATāS A MASS MURDER. IF THAT EVER HAPPENED TO WHITE PEOPLE THEYāD END THE FUCKING PLANET.
THEY. DONāT. CARE. IF. YOUāRE. DEAD.
WE NEED TO RISE UP AND DESTROY A SYSTEM THAT EXISTS TO DESTROY US. These people and their mentality need to be stopped. They cannot be allowed to have this much power over us. We are much more in number.
Please. I cannot physically handle hearing about another black person being murdered. I cannot bear to hear another Muslim attacked and killed. Please. These are our brothers and sisters. If we stay silent they will treat us like they treated our ancestors and they will always get away with it and history will paint them the victors. We canāt let that happen.
These are precious human lives. Please stand up and revolt. A system that seeks to destroy itās people cannot be allowed to continued. It must be destroyed. Please stand up for your brothers and your sisters. For your children. For your ancestors who suffered before you. For yourself. WE CANNOT AND MUST NOT LET THIS CONTINUE.
