“Yeah well, who needs it?” She retorted, grumpy at the fact that Mike didn’t seem to be taking her side. Reaching for his hand instinctively, she shook her head. “No, it’s okay! I mean, I was. But like…. I dunno, I guess I wasn’t breathing enough? Like I wasn’t getting enough oxygen to my lungs or something so… they made me wear that machine with the tube thingy, which was super uncomfortable, but I wasn’t like… not breathing.” She chewed on her lip. She hated that look on his face, that concerned look. But what was worse was the look on his face when he said her name. She had never hated anyone before, but she was pretty sure this was what it felt like. She even hated the name. It was such a stupid, ugly name. Sugar had no idea what Mike saw in her, she was nothing but a bully, had physically hurt Kitty, threatened Sugar on numerous occasions and manipulated people at every turn. But maybe she was really good in bed or something. That’s all men really cared about anyway. “Well…. good. Guess you probably want to get back to her.”
The explanation allowed him to breathe a bit easier, but the underlying concern was still there. He felt it on an almost cellular level, the question of whether or not he would be able to just believe her that everything was ok even once she was out of the hospital, in a way he couldn’t remember ever feeling before. “This is the kind of information you should lead with, you know,” he answered, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as he got more comfortable on the bed. “I’m really sorry I didn’t come by sooner, though.” Confusion quickly replaced concern as Sugar argued that he probably wanted to leave. Nothing he had said jumped out to him as leading to that conclusion and he had to bite back his frustration at seemingly having his relationship with Rachel thrown in his face. It wasn’t the time or place to argue about it. “I wasn’t planning on it unless you want me to leave.” As he spoke he was careful to keep his voice measured with mild curiosity.
