âI mean, I could handle it myself â but I donât want to get kicked out,â Allison joked, despite knowing it could be true if she wished it to be. After taking another sip of her cocktail, she smiled at the introduction. âAllison. Have you been here long?â
âCanât get kicked out if you didnât start it,â she smiled in return. It wasnât an official rule, but it sounded reasonable enough to her. âBesides, we really only have one rule here." She pointed to the sign that said 'if you fight, you mop' before turning back to continue making drinks. "Oh, since January-ish. Iâm.. glad I found you all, though. It was a total accident, and I wouldnât have stayed if I wasnât talked round. Guess my luckâs finally beginning to change," she smiled a little, actually quite struck by how far she'd come in only a short few months. It could've been a sarcastic remark but she found herself really meaning it, especially as she remembered a certain blonde's smile. Maia had only met him a few days ago but it already felt like months. âSo, I'm assuming youâve been a part of this since the beginning?â
With Scott at work, and James under Pansy's care for the night, Isaac had decided to invite Dean to The Alibi for a round of catch-up drinks. He'd only intended to stay for one or two, but the pair had gotten lost in beer and conversation, both of them having far too much to say. They'd chatted away until last call, only realising the time once the final bell had rang. Not that it mattered, he'd missed his friend.
They parted ways outside, and Isaac began the walk home, enjoying the cool night air against his skin. He'd barely made it to the end of the street when he heard it. A voice, begging for help. Maia's voice. Isaac's eyes flashed golden in response, a stark contrast to the darkness around him, and he whipped on his heels, bolting it back towards The Alibi. He'd always been the fastest runner in his pack, but even Pietro would've been impressed by how quickly he made it there. He tracked Maia's voice to the storage room out back, and immediately noticed the problem. The door was sealed shut, and he could practically feel her fists banging the other side.
They'd once confided in one another about their shared claustrophobia, so Isaac instantly understood her fear, her panic. He felt it himself, imagining the roles reversed. Visions of his bloodied nails scraping against the freezer door in his basement back home flickered in his mind, threatening to stunt him in place. But then Maia called out again. Help. This wasn't about him. Isaac wasn't the one in trouble. He brushed his trauma aside in an impressive display of bravery, pulling on the fridge door open with an unnecessary level of strength.
"Maia! Maia, it's okay. I've got you." She was stood before him, the stress radiating from her, attacking every single one of Isaac's senses. He knew better than to touch her, but his hands hovered frantically in the space around her face, heart beating rapidly in his chest. "Breathe with me, okay? Slow and steady." He had a foot wedged in the nook of the door, jamming it open, ignorant to the weight bruising his toes. Nothing else mattered to him besides calming her down. "In..." he took a long gasp inwards, finding that he needed it, too. "And out."
Even a werewolf with enhanced physiology was no match for debilitating, all-consuming fear. All the healing in the world couldn't fix her mental wounds. Her senses were misdirected, her emotions heightened to a point no human could experience, and her vision began to swim even with her werewolf sight, making an already tight space feel even smaller. She couldn't get out, she wasn't strong enough. She was going to die there. "No, please," Maia sobbed, bargaining, feeling a pain begin to surge through her freezing limbs. It was a similar sensation to a transformation but how could that be possible? It wasn't a full moon. She'd never experienced anything beyond flashing eyes and protruding claws outside of the monthly moon, and in her fear, she'd entirely forgotten the debrief she'd been given after taking the cure in Alexandria. With strong enough emotions, this could happen, and without the experience to maintain control, it would require an anchor or an alpha to turn the tide. But she had neither, the closest thing to an anchor probably waiting for her outside. She was as alone as the day Jordan had attacked her.
Crying out, she felt what she believed was her wrist snap with a loud crack, her elbow soon following suit. But she couldn't give in, not until she was dead and buried. With her unaffected arm, she continued to pull and scratch at the door until the panic began to lull into acceptance, into helplessness. Her cries quietened, muttering her pleas instead, only yelping when her shoulder felt close to dislocation. Maybe it was okay to turn in here, maybe with more force, she could get out that way. Maybe she just had to lean into it. But all thoughts were cut off with a squeak of metal, Maia stumbling forward as the door she clutched onto suddenly opened in front of her.
Relief overtook her, Maia falling into sobs again immediately, unable to even register her rescuer at first. She needed the open air, warm air, to get away from the frozen grave she currently stood in. "Oh my god, oh my god â" She stammered on a loop, clawing herself back from the acceptance of death and suffering and loneliness. Breathe with me. Adrift, Maia nodded, tears a constant stream as she tried to follow instruction, follow the voice that had saved her. In, and out. She let it ground her, let her take her away from the room she was in, let it free her from the pain that burned up her arm. Shivering, Maia stumbled forward out of the room and turned fast, sliding down the very door that had sealed her in, unintentionally holding it open.
Clutching at her twisted limb, she continued to follow the trusted voice, eyes slipping shut for a few minutes as she breathed in the fresh air, let it warm her bones. Once the rush in her head had stilled to a thud and her heart had slowed, only then did she look up and realise Isaac had been her saviour. "â Why are you always saving me?" She tried to laugh but it got caught on a sob, the jostle of her arm causing her to wince.
"Why's that then?" Chris asked, only inquisitive due to Maya's involvement. He spared another glance around the bar, now noticing the heart decorations and mini cupids plastered on the walls. Perhaps he should've paid better attention upon his arrival, but it wouldn't have made a difference. As long as Maia was working tonight, he'd have been here regardless. If that meant signing his name on a form he hadn't bothered to read, then so be it.
Despite his ignorance in regards to everything else, Chris did notice that Maia wasn't receiving his compliments in her usual manner, and he then began to wonder if something had upset her. Hopefully it wasn't something he'd done, but their exchanged texts had been nothing if not playful, flirtatious. She also seemed like the type of woman who'd be direct if he'd pissed her off. Which he liked. So he persisted, kept the smile on his face, leaning further forwards on the bar so that he felt closer to her. "Oh yeah? Good deal, that is." He actually had money to spare tonight, too, having saved in advance. She deserved to be spoiled. "Well, Maia, that depends. Is it going to help get the love flowing between us?" Chris tilted his head, trying to catch her eye. "Or am I going to have to wait until after your shift finishes so I can take you out and treat you properly, like a real lady deserves?"
Failing to read his question as confusion, Maia only grew more frustrated, placing down the glass she was holding with a loud clunk, heavier-handed than intended. It was a miracle she hadn't broken it. "Well, you tell me, you're the one participating. I hear there's a lot of people signed up. You should have a lot of options." And with that, her patience ran out, Maia turning away from him seemingly to return the glasses. With her back to him, she closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath, willing herself to calm down. She could deal with her disappointment later, without his eyes on her. She couldn't give him the satisfaction. But when she turned back, he had moved in, and Maia inhaled sharply upon opening her eyes, startled by the sudden closeness of him.
It was hard to avoid his eye, but still, she tried, the proximity of him making her strangely nervous. She had every chance, every right, to move away, to get on with her job and leave him behind, but for some reason, she couldn't. It was like she was paralysed, lost in the warmth she could feel radiating from his skin, focused on his strangely pleasing scent of cigarettes, detergent and something akin to the damp earth, as if he'd just been lying in the grass. It was uniquely him, she knew she could pick it out of a crowd. For a moment, her anger was lost, and she could notice how his voice had gotten lower, hear how his heartrate had increased, smell the slight dampening of his palms. They were all telltale signs of attraction, and she would've found herself lost in it had she not suddenly remembered herself, remembered how she'd felt only moments ago. His words were honeyed, his allure a trap. She'd been down this road before.
Shaking herself mentally, Maia took a step back, released herself from his spell, and sighed. The sarcasm was gone from her voice, as was her anger, the werewolf now a picture of guarded vulnerability. One more hit and she'd break. "Listen, Chris â you're... cute. But I'm not gonna play games with you. It's not what I want. So, you can go ahead and order something if you'd like, but otherwise just - leave me alone. Please."
With last drinks over and the bar wiped down, the late shift was finally over. Maia had sent Kev home hours earlier, promising him she'd lock and tidy up, giving him an early mark to actually have dinner with Veronica. It felt like the couple rarely saw each other outside of work, so she figured they deserved it. She'd really come to like them. As the few remaining patrons staggered out, Maia stacked up a few slabs of unopened beer and carried them to the cold room out the back, the last of her tasks for the night. She'd done it a million times before, but for some reason, this time she'd completely forgotten to wedge the door open. With a heavy thud that echoed right through her very core, it shut behind her, locking her in. "No," she muttered, shaking her head. She could get out of here, she was strong enough. "No, no," Maia turned after she'd dropped the beers, pulling on the handle. The metal bent in her hands and she nearly snapped it off clean, the panic only increasing her strength. And still, the sealed fridge door didn't open. "Please, oh my god. Please, no. Let me out! Get me out of here!" Within minutes she was frantic, banging on the metal, screaming, feeling her throat beginning to close up, her eyes flashing yellow. "HELP! Please, somebody help!"

Chris' face lit up as Maia walked in front of him, tapping the bar in excitement. She's who he'd been waiting for, after all. "Hey gorgeous." She looked hurt for a reason Chris didn't understand, but it didn't sway his confidence. He'd come here to ask her on a date in person, so hopefully he'd be able to return the smile to her face. "I had to sign up to get inside tonight, didn't I?" His face was a picture of confusion, and he glanced around, only now noticing there was an event on. Whatever it was, it didn't interest him. "Nah, I don't want anythin', just came to see my favourite lady."
"Yeah..." Maia replied bitterly, shrugging her eyebrows in response, not catching his lost expression as she'd begun cleaning out some leftover glasses instead, itching for something to do. "You did." Looking back at him now, she shot him a forced smile, the anger from her prior conversation with Jace still swirling in her gut. Seeing Chris enter the Alibi had already set her off, but the Shadowhunter had only made it worse, and she knew it wouldn't be long now before her frustration spilt over into tears. But she couldn't have that tonight, she was working. "Should be fun!"
The affectionate term caused a twitch in her stomach, and had she had the capacity to, she could've worked out he wasn't just talking shit. But unfortunately, she couldn't focus on anything bar her emotions. Maia had always struggled with control since being turned, not just because of the way she'd been turned but also because she was without a pack and anchor to keep her grounded. The smallest of things could set her off, so something this important to her was near overwhelming. And clearly he was more important to her than she'd even realised â he'd given her excitement and hope, and now he'd gone and taken it away. "Okay then," she cleared her throat. "You sure? We've got a two-for-one deal going tonight. Helps get the love flowing, apparently."
âOh â hey.â Maia startled, swallowing down the sting of hurt she felt at seeing Chris there as she returned to behind the bar. She'd really been hoping he wouldn't show up, that he'd just signed up long before they'd met, when the call first went out. But she'd been wrong, and stupid to have thought otherwise. Men were all the same. âThought I saw your name on the sign-up sheet.â Uncomfortable now, she looked away, watching as the various singles began to file in. "It's gonna get really busy soon. Can I get you something?"
Chris shrugged, grateful that his lines, whilst cheesy, at the very least were making her laugh. It always made him feel better about himself, like he actually had purpose. âWell thereâs plenty more where that came from, alright? So you better get used to it. âCause Iâm gonnaâ use my best material on you. Got a whole book with your name on it. âPick Up Lines for Maiaâ, thatâs the title. Best seller anâ all.âÂ
He watched her as she worked, entirely captivated. How someone as gorgeous and charismatic as her was still single baffled Chris, but he was far from complaining. It would be a privilege to even be rejected by her. With that in mind, he promised himself to pursue this, regardless of the outcome. Her kindness was inspiring. âThat it does, babe. That it does. I think some blokes take themselves too serious. âAinât always gottaâ be a squabble and a kick-off. Some twats just need to learn how to live in the moment, and enjoy things.â Chris smiled back at her, already keen to speak to her over the phone despite not having left yet. He did wonder whether or not sheâd actually call, but she didnât seem like the kind to break a promise.Â
âMe, actually. Fair is fair, mâlady.â Chris took a while to ponder her question, wondering what ask her. As much as he was interested in her family, her history, the usual topics â it wasnât really his style. âHow old were you when you learned how to ride a bike?â
Maia shook her head at him, grin still dimpling her cheeks. âActually, I think Iâd like a copy of that book, if you can swing it, âcause I know the author. He might even sign it for me. Iâll try my luck anyway,â she shrugged. Maia was unable to recall the last time sheâd felt like flirting, engaging in a conversation so light. It made her feel like a different person, like she was free.
âYeah,â she huffed in total agreeance, instinctively reaching up for a moment to touch the deep scars on her neck. âTell me about it. You can practically smell the entitlement rolling off them.â Perhaps it wasnât a fair statement, but Maia certainly thought so, considering her experiences. âSo, is that what you do? âLive in the momentâ?â It was a foreign concept for her, so considering how refreshing his energy was, it made sense. He seemed very carefree, and that was something sheâd lost long ago. Or perhaps, it had been stolen from her. Waving him off, she incidentally shut down his kindness without realising she was just sabotaging herself. âWell, neither of my bosses are here tonight, so it could just be our little secret.â
âA bike?â The question was so left of field, but also perfectly suited the personality she was already coming to understand, that she couldnât help but chuckle. Nobody had ever asked her that in her entire life before, and that was exactly why she found him so compelling. Biting her lip to stifle her grin, her expression sobered as she thought about her response, not wanting to sour the tone of the conversation, but also wanting to be honest. âWell, Iâm sorry to be so boring, but I actually never learnt. I, uhâŚâ How did she word it? âI didnât really have anyone to teach me. â You donât really seem like a bike guy though,â she continued on, attempting to divert attention. âSurely youâve got a skateboard or something, right?â
âCanât have been that awful, look at that smile.â Chris grinned, gesturing towards Maiaâs mouth. âCould light up a room with that thing, who needs electricity?â He found himself glancing at her for a moment, really appreciating her features. It wasnât rare for Chris to see the beauty in people, in fact he saw it in everyone, but that didnât mean some didnât stand out amongst the rest. âAs for the drink, though... that ainât me. Iâll pay my way and get myself drunk, but I ainât doing that to you.â
âI mean, I canât take mine off you. But that doesnât mean thereâs something wrong with âem, in fact, it means theyâre working fine. Why wouldnât I wannaâ look at you? Pretty shit line, that one. And thatâs cominâ from me.â Chris laughed at the threat she mentioned, making a mental note not to get on her bad side. Then again, he imagined heâd quite like seeing her feisty; having her tell him off. Winking, he took her phone, putting in his own number, and adding the sunglasses emoji to his contact name. âPromise me you wonât leave me hanginâ.â
âAlright, next time it is then. I owe you one. OrâŚâ he mentally recounted the shots heâd bought, discounting the one heâd just given her. âThree. Youâre quite fun, ainât you Maia? I wannaâ know more about you.âÂ
Maia felt her jaw go slack for a moment, genuinely taken aback by his compliments. These days, when men flirted with her, it made her incredibly uncomfortable, especially if they were textbook attractive. Love terrified her now, and it wasnât something she went openly looking for anymore, distrust guiding her every move. Dating had been off the table for years. But hearing his comments now startled her exactly because she wasnât uncomfortable about them. They were cheesy, sure, but genuine. Light-hearted. Maia could sense that. âJeez,â she eventually laughed, her grin remaining. âI feel like you might have to, if Iâm to handle all these lines.â Still, she appreciated his reply, sensing it was true. She only hoped he wouldnât take advantage. Sheâd fallen for it before.
She shook her head at him, laughing again. Their conversation hadnât gone where sheâd expected, and even though that didnât bother her, she had to wonder why it didnât. Taking the time to watch him, she pretended to look busy for a moment, holding up a finger in apology before washing out some glasses. She realised suddenly that he wasnât a typical pretty boy, out for attention and a good time. She could never trust those. In fact, Chris seemed anything but, which only made her nervous. âYour charming comments aside,â she finally replied with a shrug, âI guess he just wasnât thinking like you. Logic seems to go out the window when it comes to dudes and drinks. Though Iâd consider that their truest selves.â Noticing the emoji, she smiled before pocketing her phone again, making sure to meet his eye. She wasnât sure why, but she felt herself willing to give it a shot. âHey. Cross my heart.â
âWhoâs counting?â She winked, gathering some more discarded glasses. âOh, youâve got that right. Iâm super fun. What do ya wanna know, Mr Sunglasses Emoji?â

âGuess I wonât be sticking around for that then. Donât want you bitinâ an ear off me or something.â Chris grinned. Heâd never actually seen a transformation before, and whilst he held a morbid curiosity, it wasnât something heâd delve into anytime soon. Not that he minded the supernatural, not at all, they were justâŚÂ people, but heâd heard it was painful. He couldnât even begin to picture Maia as hairy or scary, so he dropped the subject with a shrug, wondering if one day heâd ever see her wolf form by mistake.
âYou ainât heard that one before?â Chris raised his eyebrows, glad heâd hit her with some original material. He couldnât remember where he himself had heard it, but if it wasnât common, maybe it might just work. Or put her off, but heâd always been one for taking a chance. âNot surprised youâve heard a lot of âem, though, you probably get all the lads hittinâ on you here. Câmon then, tell us what others ones youâve heard. I wannaâ hear âem all. Might just add them to my own collection.â But after a moment, he realised how sheâd responded to his line â positively. âYeah?â He couldnât avoid smirking, wondering how on earth someone as pretty as this was giving him the time of day. Usually the women he fancied werenât so⌠out of his league. âAlright, then. Lets hear your number, since youâre up for callinâ me.â
After finishing his own shot, Chris eyed Maia, impressed by her willingness. Then again, she did work behind a bar, so perhaps he shouldnât have been so surprised. She was daring, though, and he liked that. Willing to have fun, too. All qualities he greatly admired, since he was so much about living in the moment himself. âChin chin. Maybe you should share what Iâve got left.â
Maia smiled in response, but it was half-hearted. It hadnât been his intention, she knew, but she felt the weight of his words anyway. Hatred for what she was ran through her, natural as breathing. It was fleeting, but powerful. Of course he wouldnât stick around â no-one else had when sheâd been turned. She moved away, toward the sink, letting her smile drop for a moment as she worked on pushing the thought away, hand closing around the glass. Successfully shaking it off, Maia decided to focus on him instead, on the way he could make her smile. He hadnât said anything wrong, and she had to make sure not to overthink it.
âShockingly, no. And it was still pretty awful.â It had worked, though. It had made her laugh, and that only made her like him more. âNot all, thankfully, but itâs not unusual, no. They usually either want free drinks, or to get me drunk.â Realising she was now doing both with Chris, she explained further. âIt's different with you. I can hear your heart. You don't want to trick me. Plus, you don't make me want to punch you in the mouth,â Maia shrugged, deciding to be honest, trusting in her instinct. Then she sighed at his challenge. âAlright then. Hm. I think⌠one of my favourites was âthere must be something wrong with my eyes, because I canât take them off you.ââ Maia rolled her own eyes at the memory. âHe looked away pretty fast when I offered to take them out of his skull.â Uncrossing her arms, she pulled her phone out of her pocket, pulling up the dial screen. âYou realise that makes no sense, right?â She grinned, passing him her phone. âJust put your number in, dork.â
Again, she laughed at the offer. âI definitely shouldnât. Kev may not fire me, but Veronica will totally kick my ass.â It wasnât like she was a lightweight, but she knew giving out free drinks and then having some herself wouldnât look good. As much as she wanted to, her job meant a lot to her right now. It provided stability. âItâs okay, you enjoy it. Maybe next time, when Iâm off the clock.â
Chris raised his eyebrows in interest. âAh, so youâre one of those werewolves then. Didnât think they were supposed to be pretty. âThought they were all hairy and scary. But youâre like â stunning.â
âAh, but none of that matters if you donât enjoy the journey. And to do that, drink!â Chris was definitely an âin the momentâ type of guy, he lived how he wanted to live. Maia had already seen that in him, by the looks of it. âAlrighâ, Maia it is. You can call me Chris. Or you can call me anytime, whichever one you like.â He smiled at himself, and then at her, more than grateful for the extra shots, as he couldnât afford much. Due to his new interest in her, and her kindness, it only made sense to offer her the fourth. âWell, Maia, Iâm here on me ones. So Iâm gonnaâ have to ask you to join me... unless thatâd get you the sack. Canât be having that, can we?â Nodding at her, he took the first shot, knocking it back with a wince. Still, it felt good to be drinking again, so he passed a happy sigh afterwards.
âAh,â Maia glanced down, using the opportunity to wipe over the bench, oddly flustered by the compliment. It wasnât like she wasnât used to getting hit on, she worked at a bar. But it didnât feel like he was bringing it up to get free drinks, or to even get her attention. Heâd said it so casually, and talking about something else entirely, Maia wasnât sure what to think. It had been a long time since sheâd met someone that seemed this genuine. âWell, thank you. But no, weâre definitely hairy and scary, just.. only when the moon is full.â
She expelled another small laugh, shaking her head a little at his enthusiasm for alcohol. Although, they were in a bar, so she couldnât argue. âSure, thatâs one way to do it.â Maia opened her mouth to greet him properly when he continued on with a pretty awful pick-up line, one that made her laugh all over again. âWow. That was â I mean, wow. Just when I thought Iâd heard them all.â Still, sheâd never heard them from a guy like this. In just a few minutes, Chris had made her laugh a countless number of times, and not once had she felt pressured or uncomfortable. âBut alright,â she decided with a shy smile, deciding to be bold, follow her gut. âIf youâre being serious, then I guess Iâd be up for doing both.â
She considered his request as she watched him take the shot, absentmindedly wiping out a glass. She was sure she wouldnât get fired, especially since Kev wasnât around. Not that he seemed like the firing type anyway. As long as Maia stayed behind the bar, she decided it would be fine. It wasnât like sheâd feel the effects from one drink either. âAlright, Chris. Youâre on.â Without hesitation, she lifted the fourth shot, pressed it against his in cheers and downed it.
âAh. No princess in shining armour for me then. Not that I need one, yâknow, these muscles.â Chris tensed his arm, although evidently, there wasnât much to look at. The guys he was complaining about, however? They probably had much more under their shirts. âIâm into anythinâ. Itâs gottaâ work though. Otherwise whatâs the point?â Chris followed her eyeline, considering his options as she listed them off. âOoo. Go on then, gizâ us a vodka. As many as you can with this please, mâlady.â He tossed a few bucks on the table, most likely enough for two and a half.
âThe best I got is a fur coat and sharp claws. Sorry about that.â Maia raised an expectant eyebrow at the display, but ended up laughing once again, shaking her head at him. âYouâre right. Theyâd never mess with you.â
âSome say the journey is the point, the things you learn along the way,â she replied, mocking a Capitol accent. âDoesnât seem like your style though.â Nodding at his decision, she waited for the payment, scrunching her nose up immediately at the name. âGod, no, please, call me Maia.â Taking the notes off him and stuffing them into a jar Kev had clearly labelled âincumâ, she knew he couldnât afford much more than two. Still, she produced four shot glasses, and filled them to the brim. âThird oneâs on the house for making me laugh. Fourth is for whoever youâre drinking with. Enjoy.â
âNah thatâs alright. Itâs not your fault, itâs all these wankers behind me. Drinkinâ for Panem, these lot, âdonât care who theyâre holdinâ up. Arseholes, Iâm tellinâ yaâ.â Chris smiled, leaning over so that his elbows rested on the bar. âCheapest thing youâve got babe. Alcoholic, though, canât be gettinâ merry off an orange juice now, can I?â
Maia opened her mouth to comment back but found herself laughing, genuinely surprised by his reply. People did a lot of weird shit when they were drunk, but she hadnât met anyone this forward thus far. âMight wanna keep your voice down. I canât stop them if they decide to bite back.â She likely could, but she was joking nonetheless. âI mean.. you could. Depends what youâre into and how hard you try,â Maia smiled, glancing down at the taps. âI guess draft beerâs our cheapest, but thatâs pretty boring. Vodka? Tequila? Shots are only a few bucks.â
I bet I can still beat you off the jump.
