BIOGRAPHY (cw religion, religious trauma, homophobia)
as mentioned above she’s the fourth born of nine kids and i wouldn’t put it past her parents to try for a tenth. on the surface the johnson family seems like your typical close-knit utah family. they’re mormon and very devoted, but they come across as fun loving and even forward thinking.
maia’s father runs the family as a tight ship and the older siblings have always been expected to help with raising their younger siblings and helping around the house. it’s led to her having a very close bond with her younger siblings, teaching most of them to snowboard and being the cool sister.
her father was also very hands on with all of them and made sure that all of his children regardless of gender knew how to hunt, had some essential survival skills and how to handle multiple weapons. whether he was taking them to an archery range or making them all suffer through skinning and cutting up an animal as a family, maia was a natural at all of it. despite her excellent shot and ability to quickly learn new skills, her interest in guns in particular is pretty low. honestly, she mostly just does it to show off or blow off steam. she has a very logical attitude about hunting but deep down doesn’t really like doing it, she’s just been desensitised by experience.
in her hometown despite being a part of the church like almost all the other families around, maia’s family was one of the few non-white families and she definitely began to notice it more as she grew up.
the rigid standards and superficial striving to always be the very best on the surface became tiresome for her as her personality began to develop, but she learned how to talk her way out of trouble fast. alternatively, she would run until the problem sorted itself out. there were many a night when she was nine or ten that her family was out with flashlights calling her name as she hid up in a tree after having knocked over one of her mother’s vases or punched one of her brothers for saying something she didn’t like.
it was also around this age that her father saw some of her raw potential and began to connect with her by putting her in track. he wanted her to have something to excel at and she took a liking to it quickly. it was something they shared and he had no issue bragging about her to anyone who’d listen. he even let her get away with more if she won meets, another source of motivation for her.
that being said, despite her talent in track that followed her into high school, she wasn’t quite there with her grades. it always seemed she had to work twice as hard to be able to scrape by.
the insecurity built up in her from more than one avenue the more she grew up. she realised she wasn’t much a fan of dressing the way she was expected to and felt insecure about being looked at by boys especially. she found herself picking them out almost at random to have ‘crushes’ on to appease her friends, but she’d find herself obsessing over close friendships. it wasn’t a realisation that happened overnight, it was a knowing that she was different, that she was a lesbian and that her family would never, ever accept that. everything she knew about lgbt people was framed within nobly denying yourself and becoming celibate. she wasn’t willing to do that.
track didn’t get her into a college. in fact, she kind of lost her momentum for anything impressive the closer she got to graduation. she was the sporty girl, the type to sneak out and drink too much at parties, the one who acted first and gave shitty apologies later. she wasn’t looking to give that up and most of her friends were attending byu anyway. their relationships faded as she found a job cleaning up and fixing things at her siblings’ middle school, a job her dad got her without asking her if she wanted it first. a job that felt like a punishment, though he never mentioned a word about her about her sexuality.
her one romantic and sexual experience was with a tourist in salt lake city, on a weekend out with her sisters, two of which have become mothers now. she disappeared and went home with a girl, fumbling and nervous. maia is quick-witted and stupid funny until there’s a pretty girl in front of her. it was brief and she left before the sun came up, feeling sick to her stomach that someone would be able to tell. she had to pretend she’d gotten caught up with a guy and promise that they’d done nothing but kiss.
on some level she thinks her parents know who she is, but they love her enough to pretend otherwise. which is... not better, really. still, maia takes it because she hasn’t been able to stomach being honest. instead she flies out of the house any chance she gets, hangs out with stoners but always comes home for church.
even now maia lives in a state of trying to undo her self loathing over her sexuality and part of driving all the way from utah by herself was trying to just... be somewhere else. to maybe even be herself. it was either that or try avoiding her parents by spending money she didn’t have on gas to be out all day every day. at camp silver lake she hopes to figure out who she really is... if she lives to do so.
