it’s  not  that  aurelia’s  never  been  prepared  for  disaster.  training  school  had  prepared  her  for  a  lot  of  eventualities.  it’s  just…  always  so  helplessly  sad  and  she’s  not  used  to  dwelling.  all  too  ready  to  find  a  distraction  whenever  the  breaking  of  bad  news  occurs.  case  in  point:  sparking  up  a  conversation  rather  than  digesting  the  camp’s  history  by  herself.  “yeah,  it’s  eerie,”  she  agrees  quietly  as  she  looks  at  their  surroundings.  brow  uncharacteristically  furrowed  and  mouth  knitted  into  a  thin  line  if  but  for  a  moment  before  it  fades  into  something  more  appetible.  “the  kids  don’t  seem  to  notice,  though.”  at  least  the  kids  in  her  bunk  hadn’t  -  as  far  as  she  was  aware.  “…  or  do  the  older  ones  actually  pick  up  on  it?”  

matthias  can’t  imagine  thinking  deeply  about  anything  at  camp  during  the  day .  the  sounds   of  children’s  general  merriment  mingled  with  the  constant  drone  of  cicadas  screaming  in  the  nearby  forest  drowned  out  even  the  loudest  of  thoughts  threatening  to  burst  forth  into  the  spotlight  of  his  mind  .  nothing  of  merit  managed  to  transpire  in  his  brain  until  sundown  ,  when  the  campers  were  asleep  and  he  was  left  with  the  steady  rhythm  of  his  co  counsellors  breathing  ,  asleep  in  their  respective  bunks  .  but  aurelia  didn’t  seem  to  suffer  the  same  ailment  .  “  i  mean  . . .  ”  he  trails  off  ,  giving  himself  a  chance  to  come  up  with  a  palatable  answer  ,  one  that  wasn’t  i  barely  even  speak  to  my  campers  unless  i  have  to  .  “  we’re  not  really  allowed  to  talk  about  it  with  them  ,  right  ?  ”  the  camp  director  had  made  that  crystal  clear  on  their  first  day  ,  before  the  campers  even  arrived  .  don’t  scare  them  unnecessarily  —  and  shut  down  any  mention  of  it  that  comes  from  the  campers  themselves  in  a  timely  fashion  .

wide  eyes  explored  every  inch  of  matthias’  vast  face  with  determination  that  single - handedly  carved  shallow  lines  across  the  stretch  of  her  forehead  ,  right  below  the  disastrous  fringe  that  was  attempting  to  crawl  its  way  towards  a  decent  length  .  ever  since  she  met  her  fellow  counselors  ,  she  had  made  it  her  personal  mission  to  find  a  certain  something  that  remained  buried  within  the  steely  surface  of  one  serene  gravedigger  —  a  treasure  that  would  most  likely  take  the  form  of  a  lip  quiver  or  ,  more  ambitiously  ,  a  laugh  pulled  from  the  depths  of  his  being  .  “  fuck  ,  you’re  completely  right  !  ”  clementine  lamented  ,  always  in  the  mood  for  dramatics  ,  cold  palms  falling  onto  her  face  with  a  brutal  slap  sound  .  right  before  she  continued  to  run  her  tongue  ,  heavily - adorned  fingers  parted  and  graciously  allowed  her  to  take  another  peek  at  him  ,  kicking  her  anything - but - subtle  investigation  back  into  gear  .  “  what  about  a  …  ghost  detective  ?  orrrr  —  ”  she  paused  to  think  ,  calloused  pads  drumming  against  her  cheeks  .  “  i  got  it  ,  i  got  it  !  okay  ,  hold  onto  your  hat  ,  ifyoucatchmydrift  —  a  ghost  cowboy  !  ”  she  plucked  the  cigarette  that  hid  behind  her  ear  with  no  hesitation  ,  propping  it  against  the  corner  of  her  mouth  while  adopting  (  what  she  believed  to  be  )  a  cowboy  stance  —  feet  set  wide  apart ,  thumbs  hooked  around  the  loops  of  the  khaki  shorts  she  had  recently  decided  would  accompany  her  home  ,  another  hideous  piece  to  add  to  her  wardrobe  .  “  whaddaya  say  ,  partner  ?  would  you  care  to  join  me  on  my  next  tussle  with  the  good  for  nothin’  hooligan  gang  ?  or  are  you  too  chicken  ?  ”  okay  ,  the  suave  adventurers  definitely  didn’t  possess  those  type  of  phrases  in  their  repertoire  ,  but  she  still  spoke  every  letter  in  that  lazy  drawl  ,  refusing  to  break  character  .  “  now  presenting  ,  the  most  fearsome  duo  in  all  the  land  :  clementine  and  the  gentle  giant  .  ”  eyebrows  wobbled  to  the  same  rhythm  as  her  sad  cigarette  ,  which  would  soon  decide  it  had  witnessed  enough  of  her  theatrics  and  hurl  itself  at  the  sharp  edges  of  the  grass  beneath  them  .  

interrupting  clementine  mid  -  monologue  isn’t  an  option  .  when  he  runs  through  it  in  his  mind  ,  he  imagines  it’d  play  out  somewhat  like  someone  electing  to  follow  the  officiant’s  instructions  to  speak  now  during  a  wedding  ceremony  .  matthias  was  by  no  means  an  expert  at  socialization  ,  but  he  knew  damn  well  how  to  forever  hold  his  peace  .  in  a  way  ,  he’s  grateful  for  clementine’s  overwhelming  deluge  of  words  ,  crashing  over  him  like  a  wave  ,  hitting  him  like  the  humidity  when  you  stepped  out  of  your  front  door  on  a  mid  -  july  afternoon  —  if  only  because  it  fills  in  the  gaps  that  the  absence  of  his  responses  normally  left  in  conversations  .  normally  ,  he  finds  himself  thinking  too  much  —  about  where  he  should  be  looking  (  his  gaze  always  ended  up  on  the  bridge  of  their  nose  between  their  eyes  )  ,  how  much  he  should  be  saying  (  usually  not  enough  )  ,  and  when  he  should  react  with  a  facial  expression  ,  eyebrows  shooting  upwards  or  mouth  quirking  into  a  grimace  .  right  now  ,  though  —  in  the  eye  of  clementine’s  storm  —  he  was  free  to  do  absolutely  nothing  ,  for  she  did  enough  for  the  both  of  them  ,  and  then  some  .  when  she’s  finished  with  her  proposal  ,  he’s  silent  for  a  few  seconds  ,  a  silence  that  he  punctuates  with  a  low  and  uncertain  :  “  uh  . . .  ”  he  resents  being  called  a  chicken  ,  which  harkens  back  to  his  time  in  elementary  school  ,  plastered  to  the  brick  wall  during  recess  ,  as  far  away  from  his  peers  as  he  could  physically  get  .  “  yeah  ,  sure  ,  ”  he  relents  ,  surprising  himself  enough  to  send  his  eyebrows  up  towards  his  hairline  ,  “  but  do  i  have  to  be  called  the  gentle  giant  ?  ”  his  distain  towards  the  nickname  is  evident  ,  no  matter  how  flat  the  affect  of  his  voice  remains  .  “  can  i  just  use  my  name  ?  ”  he  understands  that  matthias  ,  gift  of  god  ,  is  moniker  enough  —  but  he’s  grown  accustomed  to  it  in  his  twenty  -  four  years  .  and  besides  ,  he  hadn’t  chosen  it  for  himself  .  he  had  to  make  lemonade  out  of  lemons  .

the  fact  that  it  clanged  into  the  wire  bin  he  had  been  aiming  for  wasn’t  surprising  by  any  means  .  yet  the  way  he  still  describes  the  story  as  a  classic  even  after  parting  with  it  is  enough  for  thea  to  store  it  in  the  back  of  her  mind  as  a  ‘  thanks  for  being  a  great  bunkmate  ’  present  at  the  end  of  the  summer  .   ❝            i  haven’t  read  it  before  ,   ❞   thea  admitted  .   ❝  most  of  my  reading  is  to  my  younger  siblings  before  bed  .   ❞  or  at  least  ,  it  was  .   ❝  oh  ,  i  didn’t  mean  to  …   ❞  perhaps  she  looked  a  little  too  like  a  kicked  puppy  because  he’s  tacking  on  a  punchline  before  she  can  ramble  out  an  apology  for  assuming  .  at  least  ,  she  hopes  it’s  a  punchline  because  of  the  giggle  that  follows  .   ❝  you’re  probably  still  better  than  me  .  which  ,  for  the  record  ,  i’m  not  embarrassing  myself  to  prove  .   ❞  basketball  wasn’t  a  typical  summer  camp  activity  ,  right  ?   ❝  not  that  i  don’t  want  to  spend  time  with  you  ,   ❞  she  clarified  as  if  she  hadn’t  consistently  been  trying  to  annoy  him  with  company  .   ❝  maybe  you  could  read  to  me  sometime  ?  if  you  have  other  books  .  or  ,  not  to  brag  ,  but  i  have  some  glowing  reviews  from  back  home  .  i  could  read  to  you  .   ❞

maybe  he  should  shake  his  head  ,  dismissing  any  apology  that’s  brewing in  her  head  —  but  he  doesn’t  ,  devoid  of  the  social  tact  to  know  for  certain  that  that  would  be  the  right  move  .  instead  ,  matthias  just  stands  there  blank  -  faced  ,  teetering  between  options  .  thankfully  ,  in  the  end  ,  he  doesn’t  have  to  decide  ,  her  laugh  dispelling  the  tension  that  he’s  now  sure  he  must’ve  made  up  in  his  head  .  so  much  about  being  american  revolved  around  sports  prowess  ,  your  value  placed  in  how  well  you  could  kick  or  throw  a  ball ,  your  city’s  value  in  how  many  great  athletes  they  could  pay  to  play  a  sport  with  its  logo  on  their  chest  .  matthias  had  never  been  good  at  sports  ,  possibly  because  he’d  never  tried  —  but  he  put  it  down  to  the  persistent  ache  in  his  back  .  the  way  althea  talks  makes  him  shift  his  feet  on  the   cabin’s  floorboards  uncomfortably  ,  subsequent  creaks  following  his  movements  .  it’s  almost  as  if  she’s  apologizing  before  she  even  says  something  ,  like  a  preemptive  bandaid  for  a  wound  that  doesn’t  exist  .  it  makes  him  feel  guilty  ,  like  she  might  view  him  as  a  ticking  time  bomb  ,  and  one  she  didn’t  want  to  set  off  .  “  i  can  read  .  ”  he  speaks  ,  and  it  sounds  vaguely  like  he’s  trying  to  convince  her  of  his  literacy  .  “  not  out  loud  ,  though  ,  ”   he  tacks  on  ,  continuing  ,  “  save  your  talents  for  the  campers  ,  ”  he  insists  ,  unleashing  a  thin  and  unconvincing  smile  downwards  ,  teeth  still  trapped  behind  his  lips  .

maia heavily rejects the urge to be standoffish or sheepish just because someone’s a little weird. yeah, matthias’ hulking size and general peculiar demeanour leans towards being off-putting, but he’s just another one of her fellow counsellors. still, she can’t be expected not to be curious. she looks away, biting into a rubbery piece of bacon and chewing furiously as she nods. in all honesty, she’s a little jealous, she’d like to add a few inches to herself, maybe get to a good five foot eight or something. her height has never matched her energy, in her opinion. “that’s kinda sweet. my parents tried to do that but they quit after me… too many kids to mark up a doorframe up that much. instead they’d just make us line up from oldest to youngest in the yard wearing stupid outfits and take a picture for their facebook.” yes, obviously anna and hohepa johnson share a facebook account, for they are so intertwined that there was no reason for them to have separate accounts. plus, it was easier to post family content that way and show off their ridiculous amount of offspring that way. pursing her lips, she holds back the other questions she has for him: do you have a lot of joint pain? do you ever see weird shit in people’s scalps? instead, she picks at her scrambled eggs and squints into the distance.  “do you think it’s radiation?” for a moment maia doesn’t clarify her question. “like, that makes the lake that way? i heard someone saying it’s been investigated but i don’t know. i’m not trying to hang around a mini chernobyl or whatever.” too late now… and she’s clearly not that worried, since she’s been in it multiple times since her arrival. 

it’s  peculiar  ,  to  matthias  ,  this  newfound  dance  of  exchanging  childhoods  with  practical  strangers  .  funny  ,  how  amongst  the  first  handful  of  things  you’re  expected  to  share  with  a  person  you’ve  only  just  met  was  the  anthology  of  your  growing  up  —  all  the  nooks  and  crannies  ,  where  it  happened  ,  who  you  did  it  alongside  ,  and  could  you  also  rate  its  idyllicness  on  a  scale  of  1  to  10  ?  despite  its  oddity  ,  he’d  been  ready  to  offer  maia  the  story  of  his  parents  doorframe  on  a  silver  platter  .  he  hypothesizes  that  everybody  wanted  to  share  their  story  .  even  him  .  asking  about  someone  else’s  upbringing  was  simply  a  vehicle  to  talk  about  yours  .  he  nods  only  incrementally  when  she  mentions  her  parents’  disjointed  photoshoots  .  if  his  family  took  portraits  ,  they  would  look  like  grant  wood’s  american  gothic  ,  and  they  would  never  make  it  onto  facebook  .   “  if  it  were  radiation  . . .  ”   he  starts  to  answer  ,  looking  out  the  grease  -  filmed  mess  hall  window  closest  to  him  to  inspect  the  lake  the  best  he  can  ,  “  if  it  were  radioactive  we’d  all  be  fried  already  .  ”  a  chill  runs  down  his  spine  as  he  momentarily  imagines  himself  in  that  position  ,  macabre  grin  permanently  toothy  and  with  but  two  hairs  left  on  his  mottled  head  .  too  undead  -  like  to  not  trigger  his  childhood  fear  —  but  he  doesn’t  plan  on  sharing  that  aspect  of  his  upbringing  with  maia  ,  nor  anybody  else  .  “  i  mean  —  probably .  ”  he  doesn’t  know  for  sure  .

          certainly  she  heard  that  right.  though  she  saw  the  cast  of  his  shadow  before  she  heard  his  voice  and  unless  someone  had  magically  spawned  a  tree  behind  her,  she  only  knew  of  one  other  comparable  towering  figure.  one  of  her  biggest  stressors  was  the  thought  of  this  interaction  right  here  —  the  top  of  her  head  just  barely  reached  higher  than  his  bicep,  it  was  truly  her  first  real  encounter  with  humility.  “   are  you  my  mom,  matthias  piker  ?  ”  jessie  asked  sarcastically,  just  as  she  turned  to  face  him.  her  neck  craned  to  meet  his  deflective  gaze.  “  but  if  you  must  know  …  to  feed  the  bears.  i  spent  twenty  bucks  on  bear  spray,  there’s  no  shot  i  let  it  go  to  waste.  you  should  tag  along,  ”  a  disingenuous  comment  despite  the  kind  smile  she  flashes  his  way.  “  in  the  case  i  actually  encounter  a  bear,  at  least  with  you  beside  me  i  won’t  have  to  raise  my  arms  up  and  roar  to  assert  my  dominance.  ”

the  regret  hits  him  like  a  brick  wall  ,  so  hard  that  he  almost  shuts  his  eyes  and  places  a  hand  over  them  for  a  moment’s  peace  .  instead  he  attempts  to  flatten  the  cowlick  at  the  back  of  his  head  ,  wishing  he  hadn’t  asked  .   “  i  don’t  have  childbirth  capabilities  .  ”  kappa  -  bilities  .  he  can’t  think  of  anything  else  to  say  ,  looking  down  at  her  and  resisting  the  urge  to  crouch  slightly  .  he  didn’t  know  why  he’d  asked  —  he  certainly  hadn’t  expected  anything  more  than  what  he’d  gotten  ,  even  after  having  known  jessie  for  just  over  24  hours  .  but  he’d  been  tempted  to  ask  her  if  she  had  a  lighter  ,  tempted  by  the  nicotine  craving  that  had  begun  to  itch  at  the  back  of  his  brain  the  second  he  passed  through  the  camp  gates  .  temptation  sufficiently  quashed  ,  he  stands  in  front  of  her  ,  dumbstruck  and  massive  .   more  massive  than  ever  .  every  time  someone  mentions  his  stature  ,  he  feels  as  if  he  grows  incrementally  .  “  you  can  use  bear  spray  as  pepper  spray  ,  ”  he  speaks  finally  ,  “  . . .   preferably  not  right  this  second  .  ”   after  a  pregnant  pause  .

maybe it’s the fact that maia is about to spend the day working with him that has her dropping her tray down onto the seat opposite matthias in the mess hall that morning. or, maybe it’s the fact that he gives off the energy she imagines frankenstein’s monster exuding and she’s curious about him. “i’m no expert chef, but they definitely bought the lowest quality bacon known to man. this stuff tastes like rubber.” she muses in slight disgust, lifting up a particularly crusty piece off her plate to marvel at it. her gaze then flickers back to her fellow counsellor and sitting in front of him she’s reminded once again of his off-putting size, her brown eyes flickering to trace the width of his shoulders and then finding the crown of his head. “can i ask you a weird question?” she didn’t wait for his answer. “did you go through like super early puberty or something?” maia herself was a bit of a late bloomer, by her friends standards, likely because of her lithe athlete’s body. 

it  had  been  a  late  night  ,  by  matthias’s  standards  .  over  the  course  of  three  -  ish  days  ,  he’d  gotten  used  to  an  early  bedtime  —  avoiding  small  talk  with  his  fellow  counsellors  ,  and  simultaneously  knowing  that  time  the  campers  expected  their  world  to  start  turning  every  morning  coincided  with  the  crack  of  dawn  .  this  morning  ,  he  figures  he  must  look  at  least  30  times  more  ghoulish  than  usual  ,  so  he’s  mildly  surprised  when  maia  plops  herself  down  across  from  him  ,  breakfast  and  all  .  he  knows  they’re  both  assigned  to  the  oldest  kids  ,  so  conversation  isn’t  avoidable  ,  ultimately  .  he  just  hadn’t  expected  it  to  come  around  so  early  .  he  squints  at  the  piece  of  bacon  dangling  from  her  fingers  ,  nodding  his  agreement  —  though  he’s  seen  much  worse  .  he  sips  his  coffee  ,  holding  the  mouthful  on  his  tongue  for  a  second  ,  letting  the  sweetness  coat  it  while  he  combats  the  ???  feeling  that  maia’s  question  evokes  .  the  preoccupation  with  his  height  at  camp  silver  lake  was  rampant  ,  spreading  from  camper  to  counsellor  to  camper  again  with  the  same  dogged  vengeance  as  a  stomach  bug  —  and  he  wasn’t  used  to  being  noticed  quite  so  much  .  he  swallows  .  “  i  guess  so  .  ”  he  puts  his  mug  back  down  ,  long  fingers  wrapped  all  the  way  around  it  .  he  lets  it  go  when  he  notices  just  how  gargantuan  his  grip  looks  .  “  i’ve  been  this  height  for  a  while  .  my  parents  kept  makin’  marks  on  the  kitchen  doorframe  —  ”  he  uses  a  flattened  hand  to  draw  a  line  through  the  air  ,  “  according  to  that  ,  i’ve  been  over  6  feet  since  2011  .  ”

settling  into  camp  was  something  that  admittedly  was  taking  more  time  than  thea  had  previously  assumed  .  it  wasn’t  the  unfamiliar  location  or  the  sudden  increase  in  people  she  was  spending  her  everyday  with  .  those  were  the  things  she  had  settled  into  quickly  .  it  was  the  notable  lack  of  the  people  that  were  usually  by  her  side  .  being  in  one  of  the  only  three - person  cabins  was  actually  something  thea  considers  herself  lucky  for  ,  even  if  the  comment  is  usually  met  with  a  pitying  glance  from  many  others  .  the  idea  of  it  being  more  crowded  in  general  or  the  fact  she  was  bunking  with  two  boys  .  either  option  brushed  off  by  thea  in  favour  of  the  fact  she’d  never  be  lonely  .  even  if  the  company  was  a  lot  of  coexisting  in  silence  so  far  .  at  least  ,  as  silent  as  thea  would  let  it  be  . the  bang  that  breaks  the  routine  catches  her  attention  .  the  slight  jump  masked  by  thea  springing  to  her  feet  .  ❝             hey  ,  it’s  okay  ,  ”  thea  reassured  ,  flashing  him  a  smile  despite  the  fact  his  gaze  was  still  avoiding  her  .  ❝   i  won’t  tell  the  kids  that  assume  you’re  good  at  hoops  because  you’re  tall  .  ❞   though  ,  a  book  was  very  different  than  a  basketball  .  she  scooped  the  book  up  from  where  it  fell  was  thrown  onto  the  floor  ,  and  held  it  out  to  him  .  even  if  she’s  ninety  percent  sure  he  was  only  trying  to  get  up  to  throw  the  book  away  properly  .  ❝  is  it  good  ?  the  book  .  ❞

the  nasty  book’s  return  feels  like  somewhat  of  an  omen  to  matthias  from  where  he’s  standing  ,  staring  down  at  the  cover  where  it  sits  in  althea’s  outstretched  hand  .  it’s  as  if  he’ll  never  escape  the  people  who  lived  in  lake  ozark  ,  not  really  .  he’d  expected  his  family  to  stay  pinned  to  his  mind’s  bulletin  board  —  but  not  side  characters  like  the  ice  cream  man  —  who  hadn’t  even  deigned  to  drive  down  matthias’s  street  once  in  his  entire  life  .  though  the  longer  he  rolls  the  possibility  around  in  his  brain  ,  the  more  he  thinks  he’s  probably  overthinking  it  .  her  smile  flashes  at  him  like  the  lamp  that  investigators  used  when  they  interrogated  a  criminal  on  television  ,  and  it  succeeds  in  forcing  an  answer  out  of  him  —  so  perhaps  it’s  a  legitimate  tatic  .  matthias  hums  a  bit  before  he  speaks  ,  dropping  the  book  into  the  trash  where  he’d  meant  it  to  land  the  first  time  around  .  “  it’s  a  classic  .  ”   it’s  not  a  yes  ,  nor  it  is  a  no  .  a  shrug  follows  ,  and  he  clears  his  throat  ever  so  slightly  .  “  i  am  good  at  basketball  .  ”  he  lies  ,  just  because  it  makes  a  better  story  —  but  he  immediately  backtracks  ,  the  guilt  spilling  over  before  it  can  even  settle  in  .  “  —  if  i’m  standing  right  by  the  basket  .  ”

she’s been rocking back and forth from the balls of her feet two her heels for the past two minutes with quick frenetic energy. eyes following the hulking form in her cabin. it was almost comical how he ducked underneath the beams crisscrossing the roof or how the wood panels creaked underneath his feet. she’s reminded distantly of watching frankenstein in her room when she was thirteen. she’d only had an ancient tv and a vhs player then so she’d gone to the thrift store to pick up whatever she could for twenty bucks. frankenstein’s big sad eyes and homicidal tendencies had immediately enthralled her in whatever sort of i can fix him tendencies she’d been socialized into by the church. she picks at the edge of her shorts, face flushing with embarrassment. she’d blurted out something to kill the anxious silence in the cabin and had ended up it seemed scaring him off. “wait a second.” she called after him almost tripping through the threshold. “am i like, is it cool, is the cabin okay?” there’s a plea in her eyes that’s so deeply rooted in her soul it could swallow her. please say i’m okay, please say i’m normal, please tell me i did good, please, please, please. “wait do fifteen-year-olds smoke pot now?” 

daisy  moves  like  a  squirrel  in  the  middle  of  the  road  ,  twisting  back  and  forth  like  it’s  not  sure  whether  to  press  forward  to  the  other  side  or  go  back  in  the  direction  it  came  ,  vehicle  rapidly  approaching  .  in  turn  ,  it  puts  matthias  on  edge  —  a  cat  with  it’s  hackles  raised  ,  sussing  you  out  before  they  deem  you  friend  or  foe  .   “  oh  . . .  yeah  ,  it’s  all  good  ,  ”  he  shrugs  ,  rapping  his  knuckle  once  against  the  doorframe  .  he  feels  trapped  in  her  gaze  —  she’s  doing  the  baby  animal  eyes  that  he’s  seen  set  into  campers’  faces  a  million  times  already  this  week  ,  the  ones  they  brought  out  when  they  were  about  to  cry  or  lie  to  get  something  they  coveted  .   “  i’m  just  doing  what  the  director  told  me  to  do  .  ”   he  hopes  the  explanation  will  freeze  any  further  cabin  inspections  inquiries  in  their  tracks  ,  because  he  doesn’t  really  know  what  he  was  meant  to  be  checking  for  ,  exactly  .   “  i  dunno  —  apparently  .  they  told  me  to  take  anything  that  looked  herbal  .  ”  so  far  he’s  confiscated  a  sprig  of  queen  anne’s  lace  clutched  in  a  nine  year  old’s  sweaty  hand  ,  and  a  tiny  silk  sachet  of  potpourri  ,  obviously  sent  in  someone’s  suitcase  by  their  mother  —  to  keep  it  fresh  .

it’s  difficult  not  to  oblige  clementine  .  matthias  had  grown  up  surrounded  by  stoic  ,  proud  ,  red  american  hearts  —  each  summer  brought  lively  tourists  to  the  lake  in  his  hometown  ,  but  they   were  fleeting  visitors  that  kept  to  the  tourist  locations  by  the  shoreline  ,  here  today  and  gone  tomorrow  .  clementine’s  akin  to  a  character  in  a  book  .  or  a  plucky  girl  in  a  tv  show  that  goes  through  hardship  but  always  comes  out  on  top  by  the  last  few  minutes  of  the  episode  ,  before  the  credits  cut  her  tale  off  cold  for  5  seconds  while  the  next  episode  loaded  up  .  whimsical  ,  to  a  point  .  he  wants  her  to  keep  talking  so  that  the  suspension  of  disbelief  can  continue  uninterrupted  .   “  you  want  to  be  a  police  officer  ?  ”   he  asks  ,  looking  at  her  out  of  the  corner  of  his  eye  ,  voice  low  ,  like  it’s  a  secret  .   “  probably  shouldn’t  advertise  that  . . .  y’know  .  ”

the  question  is  presumptuous  ,  matthias  thinks  .  no  ,  you  shouldn’t  ask  somebody  you’ve  known  less  than  a  week  if  they  want  to  be  followed  around  by  you  for  eternity  —  he’s  sure  of  it  .  it’s  too  inherently  romantic  ,  but  perhaps  max  doesn’t  see  it  that  way  .  perhaps  he’s  a  cynic  .  perhaps  he’s  just  normal  ,  and  doesn’t  overthink  every  mention  of  ghosts  or  death  or  dying  .   “  i  don’t  want  to  be  haunted  . . .  ”   he  slides  his  gaze  to  max’s  .   “  i  want  to  be  alone  .  like  ,  most  of  the  time  —  probably  upwards  of  80  percent  ,  so  . . .  ”   letting  him  down  easy  .  “  solitary  life  doesn’t  allow  for  hauntings  .  which  don’t  exist  ,  anyway  ,  ”   he  tacks  on  .  sole  -  ee  -  tary  life  suits  him  just  fine  .

sitting  on  his  bunk  ,  matthias  is  propped  against  the  wall  perpendicular  ,  spine  curved  like  a  c  and  conversed  feet  planted  flat  on  the  floorboards  —  the  only  way  he  can  slot  his  ungainly  body  into  it  .  his  copy  of  frankenstein  had  suffered  major  cosmetic  damage  on  his  way  from  missouri  to  new  york  state  ,  now  a  survivor  of  a  caramel  macchiato  -  related  disaster  .  his  first  and  probably  now  last  caramel  macchiato  .  the  embarrassment  of  pronouncing  it  mah  -  chee  -  ado  only  to  be  snidely  corrected  was  one  thing  ,  and  the  book  defiling  was  adding  insult  to   injury  .  the  pages  ,  one  straight  and  white  ,  were  now  waved  and  brown  ,  eerily  reminiscent  of  soft  serve  rob’s  teeth  ,  rob  being  the  man  who  drove  the  only  ice  cream  truck  in  the  county  back  home  .  the  realization  spurs  matthias  to  toss  the  book  across  the  room  in  the  direction  of  the  wire  trash  can  ,  despite  the  fact  that  he’s  had  it  since  high  school  .  instead  of  his  desired  perfect  shot  ,  it  lands  flat  on  the  wooden  floor  with  an  offensive  bang  .  he  wants  the  ground  to  swallow  him  whole  .   “  . . .  sorry  .  ”  the  apology  has  a  slow  start  ,  trickling  out  of  him  like  honey  before  he  attempts  to  haul  himself  into  an  upright  position  to  retrieve  the  book  ,  refusing  to  look  thea  in  the  eye  .  in  fact  ,  he  hasn’t  even  once  —  he  hasn’t  lived  with  a  girl  in  years  ,  since  his  sister  left  home  .  and  it’s  more  uncomfortable  than  the  way  his  too  short  camp  shirt  rides  up  when  he  lifts  his  arms  the  slightest  bit  .

when  his  initial  involuntary  pang  of  shock  at  being  spoken  to  begins  to  ebb  away  ,  matthias  just  nods  for  a  moment  —  agreeing  ,  but  cycling  through  his  rolodex  of  things  to  say  when  someone  even  slightly  brings  up  the  disappearances  .  he  settles  on   “  yeah  ,  kind  of  crazy  ,  ”   though  he  doesn’t  believe  it  .  bad  things  happened  every  day  .  camp  silver  lake  was  one  of  many  casualties  .   “  a  coat  of  paint  is  kind  of  a  piss  poor  attempt  at  covering  up  what  happened  —  if  you  think  about  it  real  deeply  . . .   or  whatever  .  ”

matthias  puts  down  his  pencil  with  the  speed  of  somebody  who  feels  like  they’re  in  a  dream  —  a  dream  where  you’re  slogging  through  your  movements  as  if  in  a  pit  of  soup  .  but  he  isn’t  dreaming  ,  and  she  is  saying  what  she’s  saying  ,  so  he  drops  the  pencil  slowly  ,  only  for  it  to  dangle  from  its  string  tied  to  the  clipboard  that’s  nailed  to  the  cabin  wall  in  real  time  .  bunk  checks  .  check  .   “  —  uh  . . .  ”   his  eyes  slide  down  to  her  camp  -  issued  calf  -  length  socks  and  then  out  to  the  horizon  .   “  that’s  cool  .  ”   the  emphasis  on  the  latter  word  only  reveals  its  forcedness  .  matthias  doesn’t  know  what’s  cool  .  and  he’s  fairly  certain  that  if  this  were  a  tv  show  ,  a  tinny  laugh  track  would  have  played  ,  and  maybe  a  few  people  would’ve  forced  air  out  of  their  nose  in  place  of  actual  laughter  .  he  ducks  ever  so  slightly  to  pass  through  the  cabin’s  threshold  without  losing  some  braincells  ,  making  a  half  -  hearted  escape  .  “  . . .   i  have  to  check  my  campers’  bunks  for  pot  ,  so  —  ”
