Mahogard. The city of mages. The capital of Hanfald. And your current place in the world.
Mahogard is an interactive fiction game set in a fantasy world, in the country ruled by mages. With conflict between mages and non-mages growing out of control, you get mixed up in power struggles between political factions.
At some point there might be dragons.

When Hanfald fell prey to dragons and other legendary creatures that started appearing out of nowhere 200 years ago, it was the mages who saved the country and managed to fight off the beasts.
It made sense back then to shower them with privileges as a thank-you for their heroism and as a thank-you-in-advance if the Pandemonium were to happen again.
Well, during those 200 years, the Pandemonium never happened again, while the privileges remained very real. And increasingly burdensome for non-mages.
As the day of the royal election is drawing nearer, you are thrown into the middle of political games of factions vying for influence.
Well, at least now no magical beasts are trying to destroy the country...
...right?
Create your Main Character:
Choose one of 3 available ancestries (humans and two fantasy ancestries: delga and kadari).
Choose MC's gender and appearance.
Choose whether your MC has magical powers or not.
Choose one of 3 available classes and 9 specialisations.
Experience one of 6 playable backstories depending on other choices.
Through your decisions, shape your MC's stats and traits that will influence your gameplay.
Engage with the story:
Influence the country's future by cooperating with one of political factions... or not.
Create the best future career for your MC... or become a failure no one has seen before.
Save the country from dangerous beasts (in both literal and figurative sense)...or let it be destroyed.
Make friends or enemies that might help you with all the above... or try to achieve it by yourself.
Make the disparities between mages and non-mages shrink... or become greater than ever.
The story is intended for 16+ audience.
Trigger warnings include: violence, depictions of blood and gore, death, animal injury and death.
Trigger warnings list will be updated as the game goes on.
The game is in early development and every part released is possibly subject to change. If you happen to come across any error or mistakes, please let me know.
Mahogard is a project I write in my free time - which is scarce. I have a job and other obligations that make the development of the game progress slowly. If you expect frequent updates, I advise you to check the game in the future when more content will be available.
Mahogard is a game with no romance routes. If that's a dealbreaker for you, our ways should part here.

I know it's not a representative group by any means but I'm cracking up at the popularity of the option "give a guy a garden dormouse and he can get away with anything" π
I'm not spoiling a real answer for obvious reasons - you'll have to play a little more to get to know Timo better.
(Also I'm sorry for not being more active here but I'm currently transferring all my creative resources to writing Chapter 1.)
Among kadari, writing books - specifically stories but also books about history, culture - is typically seen as a feminine task. Women are mostly responsible for caring about the moral growth of the whole community.
You might have noticed this one if you looked into the codex - the authors of quoted kadari books have female names.
There is no concept of marriage among delga tribes. There are romantic/sexual relationships but they're not officiated and they're not expected to last "till death do us part".
Also, nuclear family is very much not a thing among delgas.
I decided to post some lore crumbs to explain a little more about the world while I'm writing next parts of the story. I wouldn't want to write long essays about something you're not interested in... unless you are π. So if some of these facts catch your attention, feel free to ask!

Hi! I really enjoyed the demo! How many chapters do you plan for your game?
Dear Anon,
Thank you so much! π₯°β€οΈ I'm soo happy you enjoyed the demo!
As for the number of chapters - the current plan consists of 16 chapters + prologue and epilogue. They're divided into 5 acts that relate to various stages of the story.
But while the number of acts will most probably remain unchanged, the number of chapters may vary - I might divide chapters into two or merge two chapters together if I decide it benefits how the story is told.
Hype people up for your original writing project (no fanfiction please- it's a wonderful medium but not the focus of this blog post) or work in progress by giving us some juicy details!
I'm writing interactive fiction so... both, in a sense! I'm actually playing with this aspect. It will be more visible in the next chapters but:
In my game you will learn some truth. However, depending on the path you choose, you will learn different parts of the truth and different perspectives about it. Choosing another path may tell you a different story about what's going on.
Lowkey, I'd like to mess with players a little and play with how their perception of the events changes depending on their choices.
Last week I asked you if you wanted to see my early concept sketches of the two ancestries in the game - delgas and kadari.
Most people voted yes but there were still folks who would rather not see them. Which is valid! I decided to post the sketches under the cut - so if you'd rather wait for final versions, just ignore it.
Delgas
Both male and female delgas look very similar to each other, so just one picture that roughly shows their appearance. If you took a look at the codex, you know already that that similarity even caused the rumours delgas only had one gender...
Kadari
Differences between male and female kadari are much greater, which is also reflected in their culture. You can see my attempt at designing their clothes but that calls for more work...
Still working on the Legarod backstory! The draft of the first part now stands at 20k words so we have 5k words written this month.
I might have gone a little... overboard with branching in this part π It's just the introduction to action part but depending on the route you choose, you may learn a different version of what's going on.
What's next
I hope to send the first part to my beta reader this month π€ In the meantime, the Rakdaz backstory will be started. It's already forming in my head (as well as the companion you'll meet there!) so I'm excited to start it soon!
With some life stuff having calmed down, I hope writing goes more smoothly from now on.
I was made aware that asks on this page were turned off π€¦ββοΈ I must have accidentally messed up the page settings. Now the button is back on the page!
So if you had any doubts about it - if you have any questions about the game, I'll be more than happy to answer them! Also if there's anything you would like to share about the game or your MC, I'd love to hear it β€οΈ
Also, even if I'm not posting here, please be assured that I'm still working on the first backstory!

So regarding fantasy ancestries in Mahogard (delgas & kadari):
While there are descriptions in the game (you can also find them in the posts linked here), I know that it's sometimes difficult to imagine them.
The thing is... I do have sketches of those ancestries. But they are... not pretty sketches. I mean I-doodled-during-an-online-training-and-I-only-had-a-pen sketches. I had a long break from drawing and I was never a pro at drawing.
Of course, I plan to grab my drawing tablet (currently covered with dust) and make something passable out of them.
But my time remains limited and I barely get time to sit in front of a computer. And I try to focus on writing right now. I honestly don't know when those drawings can happen.
I know I could commission someone but money is a bit tight right now and also I would like to adjust some things in the process to bring my vision fully to life.
So my question is...
Should I post those lousy sketches while I'm waiting for the miracle of a few uninterrupted hours to make actual drawings?
Ew, no. I'd rather wait for actual drawings. Don't want to let that in my head.
No. I'm sure they're lovely but I'd rather wait for actual drawings.
Yes, I'd love to see these sketches!
I don't care either way.
I'm bald.
Voting ended onJun 29
And don't worry, either option is fine with me (or I wouldn't ask this question).

So I might actually introduce another companion soon π
Writing the first backstory (in which he appears), I think I've been around him well enough to write a little more about him. Well, at least about his younger self that is yet to go through a few things before the main story starts. Poor thing doesn't suspect a thing yet...
So it's confirmed - mage MCs turn out to be more appealing in a mage-dominated world. I guess imagining yourself having magic powers works better - or is it belonging to the privileged group? π€
Note to self: make sure mage MCs get their own portion of trauma in the game.
To be clear: I am NOT criticising any of your choices! This information is very important to me as a creator to make sure every playthrough is enjoyable and has something to offer!
I wouldn't want you to feel that one choice is inherently better than another.

I feel like a very important part of worldbuilding for any universe with a magic system is asking yourself βhow would people use this to do crime?β
So now that the game is released, it's time to make some plans!
What's done
In case you missed it - the game has been released on 21st May and has since reached 180 browser plays! I'm super thankful for everyone who decided to check it out!
You can find the game HERE (or in the pinned post if you want to play later).
What's Next
Chapter 1 - which is... character backgrounds!
As you may remember, there are 6 character backgrounds. They will be fully playable and will present you with a hopefully interesting self-contained plot each.
For reference - you can find the background descriptions here.
As my time is limited, it will take me some time to get it done. As much as I would love everyone to have at least part of their background as soon as possible, I cannot imagine working on six separate stories at the same time and remember all the variations.
Which is why I decided to introduce a Quick Start option until all backgrounds are completed. Which means you will be able to try out other backgrounds without having to replay the prologue. It will be available with the update that will introduce the part of the first background.
Of course, if you plan to continue the playthrough later, I strongly suggest starting with the prologue because I cannot guarantee the code in later chapters will work.
Right now I'm 20k words into the first background - which is the story of MC coming from a mage human family Legarod. π I'm nearing the completion of part 1 of 3 but it still needs to go under my beta readers' watchful eyes to make sure everything is working well.
I plan to release backgrounds in parts so the next update will be once I'm sure it's okay so that I won't have to change it too much later to avoid confusion.
In the meantime (aka while my draft is at the mercy of my beta readers), I will be working on the next background, which shows the backstory of MC coming from the kadari ord family Rakdaz.
Once the Legarod background is completed, the Rakdaz background will become a priority and I'll take one of the delga backstories as the one to work on in the meantime.
Did I mention you will get to meet one of your future companions in your backstory? π This story takes place 6 years before the main plot so most of them will still have time to go through more trauma character development before the main story. But you may learn a secret or two other MCs will only discover later. π«’
