Hey remember what I said about making changes to the OTW and AO3 from the inside? Fuck that shit, I was completely wrong. Stop giving them money, stop wasting time voting in their rigged elections, and start giving them noisy, angry hell on every single fucking platform you can find. Especially white people.

I loathe being stuck between the rock and the hard place of AO3 being the ONLY place I get any kind of engagement on my fic, and how much I hate, in order, the organization and people who run it, their policies, their volunteers, and the people who stan for them.

But Actually: Mac is shown to relationships with women through the show, but he is also shown to be noticeably attracted to men, especially his best friend Dennis. There have been several instances when he is obsessed with men’s physiques. He also has very reactionary religious views on homosexuality. He’s constantly trying to prove his masculinity and toughness. In the episode, “Mac’s Banging the Waitress” Charlie tells Dennis, “Do you still get the feeling he wants to bang us? That’s what this is all about”, after Mac once again tries to prove how “badass” he by performing dangerous stunts,

In season 9, Charlie says,“I know we’ve never said this as a group, but Mac’s gay”, to which the rest of the Gang readily agrees. In season 10, while Dennis is stating all the delusions the Gang has about themselves he tells Mac,“You think that you’re tough, and that you’re straight!” and Mac replies, “I AM tough!”

It’s a problematic answer. It certainly can be understood that Mac is gay – and for the purposes of this blog, Mac is gay, because that’s his stated orientation. But the overall context is biphobic: bisexuality is being treated as something where “vaguely” is considered an acceptable modifier, suggesting that those speaking to the topic don’t actually understand it. Would a writer/showrunner/etc with a greater understanding of bisexuality and less bias describe Mac as a bisexual (who generally prefers men)? Impossible to know.

However, the question has been answered for our purposes: Mac is gay.
