naim you are my beautiful girl okay ❤️?

alexa play self control by frank ocean this movie was different than i thought it was in many different ways! i wish it was longer :( but i do know that the length of the movie had to do with the sundance film festival reqs and i'm so happy it won and is playing internationally in theatres! the concept of this movie is so unique and i love how it was portrayed. i feel like the horror aspect of this movie was delivered in a more psychological than gory way and that i definitely appreciate as someone who dislikes gore. i love the pacing of this film and how the horror builds after the romance begins. having pre-established relations between the characters def gives the audience an attachment to the characters both alone and together, making us feel more invested in scenes with the entity. watching this in the theatre with my best friend had us guessing whether or not we were seeing human or entity ryan (he almost had me fooled at that screen door).

one of my favorite things about this movie is the lack of overexplanation. it feels like we are given just enough information about the characters and context in certain scenes for us to understand both the motives of the characters as well as the way the director may have wanted the audience to interpret the scene. a good example of this is the scene where naim puts his hand on the entity's cheek as it is about to attack him. while it is obvious that naim did this as a last resort of some sort, the reason why he took this action and why it worked is almost entirely up to interpretation of the viewer. personally i think that the love that naim felt for ryan was so strong in the face of that moment that it made the entity powerless, as its purpose was actively being countered.

i also love naim's character, he was very intelligent and had good survival skill but still had moments where he listened to his heart over his head, i feel like i understand him very well. as much as i would love to see the entity and certain parts of the movie through ryan's pov, ultimately i think seeing it through naim's was far more powerful for a variety of reasons. the fact that naim is presumed to have no experience with loving or having intimate experience with a boy, unlike ryan, is definitely a big one. i feel like the entire hunter subplot is very representative of the themes of internalized homophobia and self hate lightly present throughout the movie. hunter and ryan throwing rocks at each other before they kissed, for me, felt like an indicator that they subconsciously thought their actions were wrong due to their environment. it was like they were punishing each other because of what they were + the fact that they weren't able to erase that guilt or part of themselves. with naim, ryan experienced tender love and a connection that didn't make him feel guilty or hurt as a consequence. hence why his entity was naim and not hunter.

i just watched this last night and yes it has absolutely changed me

first of all i love how hilariously exaggerated this movie is. for me it represents exactly how dramatic high school and teenage life feels while still keeping the irony of stereotypical portrayals of high school you often see in media today. the fact that this cast is predominantly female just makes this all the more relatable and interesting, if we're being honest. all of the female characters feel distinctively different in a way that isn't just played out for diversity. it really felt like i could compare some of these characters to people i know from high school because they are so realistically funny. this is one of the very few comedies i've seen that have actually made me laugh more than once. i felt very entertained the whole time and the dialogue rarely felt boring. however i can admit that some parts of the storyline felt harder to follow and would make more sense to a reader on the second watch. i had to rewatch the josie and pj argument scene and think to try and understand their dialogue before continuing with the movie. maybe that's just me having poor comprehension skills. i'm not sure.

on the topic of josie and pj Oh my god i love their characters so fucking bad i love how they're so different yet similar and are easy to break down. all pj and pjhazel haters to the back okay that's my baby she's deep and just needs understanding. like she is definitely easily overwhelmed and reacts poorly to conflict because of the bullying she's had to endure for most of her pre-canon life. i personally think the reason she was so mean to hazel is because they truly are so similar in their behaviors and she didn't know how to handle that yet (KEYWORD YET) and yes hazel was crushing on her the entire movie hence why she was so hurt by her being an asshole okay toxic yuri okay. also josabel's development is perfect they are my #1 and isabel is lesbian. i feel so seen by josie's character I LOVE BLACK LESBIAN REP. anyways with them i feel like watching their progression was a highlight of the movie. the fact that isabel was actively falling in love with a version of josie that she knew wasn't real only to later find out that version of her was always there and she really is exactly if not more than the badass she described herself as to the club just had me idk. josie really brought out the best parts of isabel whenever they had scenes together i just felt those sparks. it was like isabel was discovering parts of herself she didn't even know of because she was with josie. i guess that's what being with an evil football player does to you. also both pjhazel and josabel (BOTH) kissing scenes were beautifully done no notes. i'm not going to be homosexual on the blog though okay just know i was here

as an actress i love how they used improv in the movie as well. the blooper reel was one of my fav parts! i think that using improv in a movie with this specific setting and themes just makes it feel more relatable to a teen audience and adds to its comedic aspect. mr g was funny as hell. my absolute FAVORITE scene was the ending scene with the fight club putting belt to ass with the huntington football players. as stupid as this may sound it made me feel the empowerment that they had preached. like hell yes we're all in this together girls power we are whooping ass. the football players being accepting of their killing spree was the absolute cherry on top like oh my god this is high school comedy. not to glaze but this might take the contender of my favorite peanemis so far. many more to come.
