Full Jin's Death Theory Explained
Alright guys so now that things have calmed down a bit, this is a more detailed explanation of my theory for the ‘Run’ MV. My theory from the moment I watched it was that Jin was dead, a huge plot twist from what I thought with the original ‘I NEED U’ MV. To start off with, as soon as the video begins we see Tae fall into water, it what looks like to be an endless black pit.
I think this is symbolism for the depression, Taehyung feels after Jin’s death. It feels like he’s drowning in an endless body of water, unable to find light once more in his life. After this scene we see Namjoon sucking on a lollipop, eventually just dumping the entire thing into his coffee. If we remember in the ‘I NEED U’ MV, the lollipop stood as a symbol for a cigarette, one that Namjoon dropped at the gas station.
From this, we can gather that the lollipop in the ‘Run’ MV stands for a cigarette once more. Which means that when Namjoon put the lollipop in his coffee, it was a symbol of him “putting out” the cigarette, tell-tale sign that he’s still alive. After this we see Namjoon take us to a party that the boys are having, one where this particular scene is shown.
Taehyung is shown drawing an ‘X’ on Jin’, while an outline is around him, following the path of his body. Well, at a crime scene, don’t they usually outline the body of someone dead? When you put an ‘X’ over something, what does it mean? You’re saying that it’s void, no longer there or of relevance. So this scene could symbolize Jin’s death as well, a way of letting us know that he is no more. Moving on, we see a scene where Jin is building a house out of cards.
As we all know, the outro of the song is titled House of Cards as well. If we look at the lyrics, there’s a section that says;
“As if there’s no such thing as tomorrow,
As if there’s no such thing as ‘next time’
Right now, in front of my eyes, everything without you
Is a terribly pitch-black darkness.”
What can we gather from this? The lyrics talk about being unable to move on, even as time passes by they can’t escape the darkness that follows from missing someone who’s gone. Who else do we see surrounded by pitch-black darkness at the beginning of the MV? Taehyung, because he can’t seem to get over Jin’s death, along with the rest of the boys. After this we see several scenes of the boys shouting out in frustration, followed by the scene where vmon is vandalizing some wall with spray paint. This could be their way of acting out, releasing their frustrations of their friend’s death by doing illegal activities. This explains why they go out and destroy people’s cars as well, a small way to get back at the world for seemingly taking away their beloved friend. After this we see Jhope wake up in a room that looks similar to a hospital, along with Jimin.
After they both attempted to commit suicide, (Jimin by drowning, and jhope by overdose) they managed to survive. Both awakening in what seems to be a rehabilitation center. In the 'I NEED U’ MV, Jimin is scene burning a letter in the bathtub.
A suicide letter from his best friend Hobi, who couldn’t handle Jin’s death. After the death of two of his friends, Jimin is heart broken and attempts to drown himself, thus ending up in the hospital alongside Hobi. Fortunately, they both survived, furthering my theory that Jin is the only one who is deceased. After this is the pillow fight scene and then the iconic sugakookie fight. From the beginning of the fight we see that Jungkook obviously isn’t trying to fight back, even trying to hold Yoongi and console him.
Yoongi just laughs and mocks him, as he’s definitely not over Jin’s death at all and is lashing out at Jungkook. He continues his path of destruction until Jungkook, quite literally, knocks some sense into him. Which even then, Yoongi ignores and pushes him off, throwing a chair at a mirror. Which is then followed by the house of cards collapsing and a single frame, showing Jin seemingly confused. Coincidence? This signifies how Jin’s death is causing their relationships to crumble, even that of Yoongi and Jungkook who seemed so close that they lived together. (Which can be seen in 'I Need U’ where Jungkook’s shirt is hung up in Yoongi’s bedroom.) Throughout this we can see that Jungkook is the only one who has seemingly accepted Jin’s death.
In this scene, Jungkook is the only one not joining in on the party around him. This depicts his separateness from the group. While everyone is finding any way to distract themselves, Jungkook has found peace with his death and is ready to move on. He is the only one out of his friends who accepts this, which why when the camera pans out he is seen sitting there alone. Then we see scenes of the boys running, and having a good time until we get to the scene where they create a blockade, and begin attacking other people’s cars. Like I mentioned above, it was a way to get over Jin’s death, and help them get over Jin’s death. During this scene, the only ones that are not shown actually defacing someone’s car, are Jin, Jungkook, and Namjoon. Jin because he’s dead, Jungkook because he’s already accepted his death, and Namjoon because he’s finally beginning to accept it. Taehyung even paints an 'X’ on one of the cars, this proves that this could be the boy’s way of giving Jin a last tribute. After they beginning running, probably because the police are arriving, we see Jin picking them up and helping them get away.
This is symbolism for Jin helping them move on from his death. Where the members have finally let out their frustrations and heart break on the other people’s cars, they can finally begin to move on. The next scene shows them partying in a bathroom, all the members except Jimin. This is the scene where we see all the other members have finally moved on, all except Jimin.
When Jimin does arrive, we see Jin pull him in. This symbolizes Jimin’s final push into accepting Jin’s death. We finally see all the members happy, having one last party as a farewell for Jin, sending him off into the afterlife. Finally all the members have moved on, and in the last scene we see headlights shining on the boys as they walk away. And who do we see in the car, throughout the entire video? Jin. The boys are walking away from Jin, finally accepting their friend’s death.
Jungkook, who has accepted it from the beginning turns around to give Jin one last smile and goodbye, as they finally begin to move on and Jin is put to rest at last.
