Rosa Barks is a 7 year old chihuahua/yorkie mix. She was adopted by Freshie Juice in February, Rosa has a congenital heart disease, Pulmonic Stenosis with a tricuspid valve dysplasia on the right side, she is being treated for this by Cardiologists at VSEC and is on several medications.
On October 19th Rosa was attacked by a much larger dog, upon attack Rosa urinated herself, and began screaming with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. Upon separating the dogs, Rosa laid on the floor and did not move for several minutes. It was at this point we were not sure the level of damage that had happened to her from the attack. On the way to the hospital Rosa began to move again, once at the hospital she was immediately taken by technicians to the critical care unit of the hospital where she was seen by a neurologist and cardiologist. After x-rays it was determined that none of her spine was damaged, no vertebrae broken. She spent the night in the hospital and the next morning she should both progress and worrying signs.
The doctors believe that Rosa’s brain stem was damaged during the attack. She has an uncontrollable twist to the right, and her right legs are not passing neurologic tests and she is unable to walk on her own.
Rosa’s physical wounds, 2 smaller puncture wounds were sewn shut and the 2 larger ones have tubes installed to allow the wounds to drain so that she doesn’t get an infection.
Because of Rosa’s heart condition she isn’t a good candidate for any procedures that would require her to go under anesthesia, she would most likely die, which is why treating her and diagnoses was such a dangerous and expensive process.
The initial testing just to determine if she would survive and to stabilize her cost $1,529. I was able to borrow the money from a friend to have them begin her process and I began crowdfunding via my own social media to cover her expenses but her journey isn’t over yet.
Rosa has an appointment on Monday to have the drains in the larger wounds removed, I’m also scheduling an appointment for a consultation with a physical therapist to help her relearn how to walk.
Rosa is a sweet girl whose been through a lot in her life, all she wants to do is cuddle, wear dresses and be with her friends. She didn’t deserve this terrible thing to happen to her. She is a strong little dog, she’s already pulling herself up to sitting and attempting to walk on her own, we’ve even seen her stand once since the accident. All of this is so encouraging and makes our faith in her even stronger. As long as Rosa’s spirit is strong we will keep supporting her.
Right now the goal is a blind estimate of ongoing needs.
Rosas regular medications cost $80 a month
Her appointment on monday will probably cost between $200-$250 for the drain removal and consultation.
She most likely will need to see a physical therapist once a week on top of doing exercises at home. Ideally it would be wonderful to have a home visit once a week as well.
She will also need to have blood work done and probably additional neurology tests done.
I have no idea what this will begin to cost and I’m working my butt off to support her as much as I can as well as afford my own regular bills.
Because Rosa is stable right now and her pain is being managed I don’t need this goal to be met immediately as her care will be on going for weeks and possibly months.
