Uh, you have a point there! If I had to choose between being a maid or a waitress, I’d definitely choose the latter. You’re welcome, I guess. Oh, where are you from?

I’m from San Francisco. I needed a change of scenery, so I decided to move to L.A.

“So I’m telling my friend that I’m a Hannah on the streets but Miley in the sheets when Beyoncé fucking cackles in the table next to ours and I start freaking out because I’m gonna be an Oscar winner in…“ Aitana puts her phone down, looking annoyed. “I’m sorry, did you need something?”

Maeve forces a smile at the girl, trying her hardest not to let out a rude comment on the customer’s behaviour. “Just wondering if I can take your order, miss.” 

“I just had the worst experience of my life trying to clean a guest’s room. Somehow, someway, a goddamn bee got trapped in there and practically terrorized me for a good half an hour. I broke half the room and now my paycheck is going to be nonexistent, but I killed the fucking thing. I need therapy.”

“Yeah, you do, but I’m no therapist, so exactly why are you telling me this?” 

“Oh, sorry. I always forget that you Americans never leave.”

“Isn’t all you have to do just to fix your sleeping schedule, though? That’s not hard.” 

“Probably not. Waiters was the only thing they advertised for, plus it’s the only thing I have experience with. I’ll get used to the rude customers, and then it probably won’t be as bad.” 

I am. I love my job, but sometimes…

I’m guessing drunk douchebags don’t treat pretty girls like you very well.

“Ughhhh. What do you do about horrible jetlag? My head is killing me.”

“Wouldn’t it be easier to google it than to ask a person who’s never been out of the country before?” 

"Most of them are, yeah.” 

At least your customers eat something while drinking. Mine only drink and either get touchy feely or rude or aggressive, or all of it at once.

So I’m guessing you’re a bartender? Sucks.

Another laugh and she finally settled herself before turning to the girl. “Yes,” she coughed to cover up her laugh and shook her head. “It’s just that, I really thought this was my room, but I have seemed to miscalculate the floor the room I was in a few moments ago.” She said, looking around the room. “I’m sorry, what room was this again?”

“Yeah, you’ve clearly miscalculated the floor. This is one of the staff apartments,” Maeve told her, eyeing the girl up and down. “And you clearly look like you should be somewhere else. Do you need help finding the way?” 

“Oh no drunk people are the absolute worst. They get annoying, touchy, rude or even violent from time to time. Not to forget that they’re a pain in the ass to kick out of the bar at closing time.”

“Oh, you have not been around the right kind of drunk people, then. Too bad.”

“Oh my god, that is so epically adorable.” She gushed as she heard about her parents. “I’m a quarter Chinese on my grandma’s side, but really it is not a part of my culture much, and speaking mandarin? Forget about it.” 

“I imagine Mandarin would be a lot harder to learn than Spanish, too. I’m glad I’ve been learning Spanish my entire life. It’s mostly because abuela doesn’t speak much English. She understands it, but she prefers to speak Spanish.” 

Yeah, I’m one of the maids here. Have you been here long? I don’t think I’ve seen you around before.

Okay, that made me feel slightly better about myself. Being a maid sounds ten times worse than being a waitress. I’m new, I only got here about a week ago.

“I work at the bar so there is no need to worry about my experience with guests.” he answered sarcastically. “You know what’s worse than rude customers? Drunk rude customers. That, and cleaning up puke.”

“Okay, cleaning up puke is definitely worse, but I’m not so sure about the drunk part. They’re often more fun than sober people.” 

You’re not officially a waitress without having a few rude customers.

I suppose that’s true, unfortunately. Do you work here as well?

“Rude customers are the worst but there are a lot more really nice ones than bad ones, just keep that in mind. Thinking about your paycheck also doesn’t hurt.”

“Oh, aren’t you an expert on the customers in the restaurant? Do you actually work there yourself, or are you just making an educated guess? Because judging from my first shift, the rude customers definitely dominate that restaurant.”
