Maeve O’Toole is the middle child in an Irish family with five kids. She grew up constantly surrounded by yelling and laughter, never lonely with four siblings around to bother and be bothered by. Her parents were somewhat strict, but they were loving, and Maeve felt especially close to her father. She was the only girl out of the five children, and she became a true daddy’s girl. Maeve attended the Sacred Heart school down the road from her family’s home, where she met her best friend, Bridget. Together, they became known as the girls that could be counted on to seek out the nearest action, finding the best parties every weekend, and yet still be counted on to show up to Sunday morning Mass. She had a temper, and everyone knew she wouldn’t hesitate to tear into anyone who gave her shit, but she was also incapable of holding a grudge. Chalk it up to her Catholic upbringing, but if someone apologized and meant it, that was all Maeve needed to move on. She may have been a bit intimidating, but on the flip side, she had a deeply ingrained instinct to help out those who weren’t as strong as she was, and she found herself befriending all sorts of students out of some sort of motherly instinct. Teachers called her friend group a clique, but that wasn’t accurate, because literally anyone was welcome. Her peers jokingly called her Saint Maeve of the Lost, but she just rolled her eyes and told them that no saint got into as many drunken brawls as she did.
She went to school through sixth form, getting her A-levels to please her mother, but she chose not to continue on to university. Instead, she chose to start a career, taking a boring office job that she excelled at, despite the fact that she counted down the hours till she got off every day. It wasn’t an exciting life, but it wasn’t boring, either, and she still had Bridget— who was going to uni by herself nearby— to party with over the weekends.
She takes a laid-back approach to life, counting on her gut to make decisions, and never overthinking anything. Sometimes it’s to her merit. Other times, it lands her in a world of trouble— for example, the time one of her friends persuaded her to invest money in his “fail safe business plan”. She was drunk at the time, and she’s still a little hazy on the details, but she had chosen to back her friend with more money than she could afford to risk, nearly clearing out her bank account. Of course, the plan fell through, leaving Maeve virally penniless. Her office job wasn’t enough to bail her out, and until she had her offer to work at the Apartments, she was utterly screwed.
Reason For Coming to The Apartments:
Maeve is nobody’s charity case. She comes from a large, working-class Irish family who taught her that nothing in life comes without hard work, and handouts are like poison to her. Bridget offered to loan Maeve money, but she steadfastly refused, instead taking the job as an escort at the Apartments. Maeve’s never had a particularly strong conscience, but she figures she’ll be going to confession quite a bit more often for a while. The only person she tells the truth to is Bridget— as close as she is to her family, she knows that their reaction to her change in career paths would not be a favorable one. So she lies, telling them she’s been transferred to a branch in London, and promises to call home. What her family doesn’t know won’t hurt them, and this is temporary— as soon as she has enough money to dig herself out of this financial hole, Maeve is going to be gone.
Growing up with four brothers ragging on her made Maeve tough, and she’s never been one to be sensitive to emotions— of others or of her own. She has a good heart, but she’s never been one for romance, and although she’s always seen a husband and kids in her future, she’s never made any attempt to envision how she’s going to get there. She’s just not a sentimental sort of person, and she’s never really felt deeply attached to anyone as more than a family member or friend. It gets her in trouble sometimes, because she walks all over other people without even realizing it if they don’t speak up. This, she reflects on occasion, is probably why she’s never really had a relationship. Her father calls her lack of interest in a serious attachment endearing. Her mother says it’s going to turn her into an old maid. Either way, Maeve has never been particularly worried about it.
