Today's cozy study booth! Very rainy day, made for the perfect library session (at Glasgow, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo44JYrBff_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tkrthc5w1qhq
LONG EXCITED AND HONEST POST AHEAD, BRACE YOURSELVES I was always hoping I could say this, but I never was sure I would. HIGH SCHOOL KNOWLEDGE IS NOT USELESS. These past few days have been a revelation as to the reasons why I donβt regret a single all nighter, not a single test I crammed for when everyone was telling me itβs JUST a test, donβt overthink it. The other day in my psychology lab it turned out that one of the most basic things we discussed in greek language, who we all justifiably thought was a sham, paragraph structure and lamguage format are great indicators of the nature of the text in question. We had to distinguish academic from non-academic texts, which was fairly easy, but then we also had to justify our position. That was the Β«hardΒ» part. Thatβs when it occured to me, wait a minute, LANGUAGE. And when I justified my position the instructor asked me if Iβm an English language major (or something like that, I donβt remember). All because I remembered something I should have already forgotten if I had just memorised instead of learning. And then today I was studying cells and cell structure and I was SO HAPPY I brought my notes from high school bio with me. I was so happy I stayed up so many nights these past 2 years, when I should be sleeping, blasting music through my headphones, trying to stay awake to finish revising for my tests. I never crammed to get the grades, I always studied because I wanted to LEARN (grades were just a confirmation I had done well, that wasnt WHY I studied) . Now that Iβm revisiting 2-year-old notes and knowledge, I feel almost ecstatic because the hard part, understanding, is over and I can enjoy the ride; Fill in the deets, make sure I know all the terminology in English, polish any imperfections in my diagrams, consolidate what I have learned. So I guess my takeaway message would be DONT DISREGARD KNOWLEDGE AS IRRELEVANT OR USELESS, you never know... Long post, I know, but I felt like I needed to share this, because I know I would have loved to see a post like this 2 years ago, when I was studying my ass off to know everything in the curriculum https://www.instagram.com/p/BoJbSZShZpE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=macwc2zc9zbs
Days 1+2
Yeah, I know, I missed the first two days of my reflective diary but I mean give me a break, adulting and studying for the first time away from home is not all fun.
I think the hardest thing so far was coming up with a schedule that works, a grocery cycle that fits my schedule and eating habits, figuring out a way to organise study so I get over 5 hours of sleep every night and have enough time in the morning to grab a quick breakfast, prep my coffee, and get ready without feeling like a slob.
Add to that house maintenance, just some dusting, antibac floor wipes, DISHES, kitchen cleaning, bathroom cleaning, windows, and laundry. And it all has to fit with over 125+40 hours of study (125 hours for lectures, yeah right, as if 2.5 hours is enough to prep and consolidate all the material from the lectures, who came up with that number?, and then an additional 40 hours for lab prep) and some extracurricular activities to keep me sane, I mean...
If Iβm being honest I am not too hyped about going to extras, I mean I like it, I meet people, I get to be the ridiculous blabbermouth that I am, but at the same time extras distract me from studying, and so far I have come to realise even the simplest of topics require you to put in the time to go through the textbook or the appropriate essential, maybe even further, reading.
Which takes em to my next point, I have been studying for classes for just under a week, and it has been like prepping for high school finals. I am totally okay with long hours of study, with just bathroom and snack breaks, maybe an occasional song outside the study playlist to make sure my brain hasnt shut down yet. Iβm all for that, but the thing is when I was prepping for finals (any of the 3 types of finals, really) I had a specific curriculum I had to go thruogh: chapters 5+6+8+15+these paragraphs from chapter 22. Thatβs not how uni works, and I was mentally prepared for that, but you can never be prepared n practice until the time comes, for stuff like this I mean.
Our bio department is awesome; very organised, I know the BARE MINIMUM of what I have to read to prepe for a lecture topic, I can go through the slides before class, take the major notes so that in class I can just make sure I understand everything. Itβs okay, really, I just have a lot of individual reading to do, but it definitely isnβt chaotic.
In psychology itβs different... I donβt know how far into the chapter relevant to the lectures I have to go. Like do I stop at neurotransmitters or do I go into how drugs imitate their use? Iβm cool either way but having some guidance to help me lay the foundations of my subject knowledge would help me concentrate on what I am doing at present instead of worrying about whether I missed a paragraph or if I went overboard and now I donβt enough time to catch up with other subjects.
And then thereβs economic and social history. Wonderful subject, I love it, I really do. I love how itβs not facts, rather interpretations and explanations that weβre after. But some times the slides for the lectures are not at all helpful, I sometimes have a hard time making sense of what the lecturer is trying to say, and some professors can be very monotonous in class, which makes it that much harder to pay attention when itβs 3.30p, and you have been learning since 9am.
But other than lectures, what took be aback when I started reading for lectures is that I have to figure out different techniques depending on what Iβm reading. Yeah, I know, it sounds obvious, and youβd think it was, but it turns out itβs one of the many things I had to see inpractce to completely understand. I knew I had reading to do, I saw the reading list before I started, I was prepared.Β Β
What I wasnβt prepared for was that I had to filter an extra 3 times the texts in the history reading list to see what I would take a note of. In bio and psych every little sentence can be important, I canβt be extra picky with my notes, I need them to be complete. In history, the first reading I did I think the notes I took took more pages than the text itself. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but when you have zero guidance on what to look for, what to ignore in introductions, you just try to make sense of everything and you ened up with every other sentence being important. So I guess the fact that I took very few ntoes from my second reading, but still remember it well and have some helpful hints in my notes to help me handle critical questions, is a sign of progress. It took me half the time to finish the second reading, I think Iβm starting to get a hold of this.
Okay, itβs getting late and my 9am bio lecture is canceled but Iβm still going by the library at 9am to get my bio studying on, I really want to make the best of my time while Iβm here.
Till next time,
hang in there fellow freshers
p.s. pls ignore any typos, itβs late and Iβm tired
This is what studying actually looks like. Sure, we all like a tidy desk, pens all neatly tucked away, notes orgnised in folders, notebooks with vefy neatly written notes filling uo their pages. But when you're actually putting in the work, focusing on something, you can't really be bothered with maintaining a neat worplace, or at least I can't. Once I'm done, sure, I'll put on some music and tidy up, but while I' working it always gets messy, and the things is, no one should be ashamed of that, because it's a sign of authentic effort. Do you always keep your desk tidy, even when working? (at Glasgow, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoAkZN6haaK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1t4hn2blf7f78

Hmmm, new project?
Hi there, yes this feels like a fresh attempt at a new project,
I have actually had this blog for 2 years, but I thought that maybe now that I am in uni Iβd give it a new shot. I used to be studyingcassiope, on here and on instagram, but I htought Iβd change my username to something more scientific, because I have switched from high-school classics, to uni-level science, hence the name.
I read in my study skills self help book about some reflective academic diaries, and I thought to myself, why let this blog die? So I decided to turn this to my academic reflective diary I guess!
Iβll see you tomorrow for my first entry!
Starting a new feed to mptivate my self to sit down and study for my finals, even if I don't quite care about the subject πππLet's see how this works out!! Have fun studying guys!! Cassiope #notes #literature #studygram #studyblr #studyblog #studying #study #nerd #finals #exams #stress #cramming #squattingup #motivation #studyspo #inspiration #junior
New pist today because I feel like I am actually committed to this! It isn't as bright as it was yesterday, but still, kind of aesthetic I guess Anyway guys, good luck with studying! Okay I am really sorry for not posting all this time, I suck but I will be making a comeback, starting with some of my physics notes!! Guys remember whatever may be stressing you, don't spend too much energy on it; find something that relaxes you and while you, for example, study for something stressful take regular breaks and do what relaxes you. Remember you natter more than your grades, however important they may be. Your physical and mental health should always be your No1 priority; get the amount of sleep you need, make time to eat and exercise (if you like), make time for yourself, let the pressure exit your system, take good care of your body and mind. You matter. Okay, my caption is getting waaaay too long Till next time (which may be a few hours from now) Cassiope #study #studying #studyspo #studyinspo #studymotivation #motivation #studytime #notes #physics #ohm #highschool #exams #stress #studyblog #studygram #studyblr #nerd #stationary
REVISION TIME!! Helloooo everyone! So I am on my natural environment (that is my room) shifting between sleeping and studying on my dear desk! This is honestly the best time of the year: no school (which means I can sleep in and have proper breakfast upon waking up) and just revision! Of course I have a couple assignments, for my foundation courses, but that's nothing compared to the revision I have done today! Studied nucleic acids, and made majestic notes on sociology, more particularly deviance! Here's a pic from my latin notebook; I am just now shortly revising my latin because even though I haven't studied in a while I will need to get on with the curriculum right after finals. Guys I am SMOTHERED with revision but I honestly dooon't mind. Well not now, but a few hours ago I did experience a rush of panic when I opened my email to see lots of mails to be sent and assignments to be taken care of. Once that first wave of shock was out of my system, I reminded myself just how much I enjoy this and got down to work πππ. Special thanks to my friend (yes, you John) for understanding and supporting me when panic hits aaand to a lovely German friend I only met today for inspiring me to dive back into my latin and ancient Greek studies ( she's @latinesca guys give her a follow she deserves it and so does your feed!) Aaaanyway, I'd better go now: more notes to take care of. Have fun studying guys! Hello everyone! It's been a while! Sorry for being so inactive but I had a school trip and I've been exhausted ever since but it was such a wonderful experience! School is over for Easter holidays and I am over the moon! Finals are close but I have always enjoyed this period because I can self-study and sleep and go out and just do everything I like freely! Plus more walks to the seaside, which is great! Here are some of my favourite literature notes. I can honestly say that I am not a poetry fan but very recently I have started reading it increasingly passionately! Anyway, I have to go; I have sociology class now πππ (Why so happy? Not complaining though...) Have fun studying guys! Calliope #study #studyspo #studying #motivation #literature #studyblog #studyblr #studygram #notes

In between maths and history. I am so in love with studying, even though I have had an objectively counterproductive afternoon. Didn't have much hw for school tomorrow, so I got some independent studying done and it felt so refreshing. π§: Mia and Sebastian's Theme, La La Land (This movie was so beautiful, it did take some independent interpreation though but it was absolutely beautiful, gave me so much food for thought) Right guys, have fun studying till next time!
