12. Grudges and Vendettas
Oh boy can he hold a grudge. Heās very low on the vendetta front, thatās his cousinās forte. But Seren can hold a grudge like itās going out of style. The biggest grudge he holds against is his father because good ole Bann Trevelyan is an asshole. Like most of the issues in his life, it all boils down to his first love, Rinli, a city elf who Seren grew up with. Rinli was Serenās favourite person, and while their class divide left Seren a little misguided, neither of them really cared. Rinli was a mage, and ultimately the few years before disaster struck was consumed by Rinliās plans to leave Ostwick and be somewhere safe, especially as the news of Mage rebellion was stirring throughout the Free Marches.Ā
Rinliās mage status, and their plans to leave were both kept secret and safe right up until the last few weeks before the two boys left, when Seren was discovered sneaking out supplies by his elder brother Oran, and everything exploded. Oran swore to keep the secret to Seren and then ran straight to their father and spilled. What followed broke Serenās heart, leaving Rinli in the Circle, Rinliās mother injured and alone, and Seren unable to trust his brother or his Father. The following few years was consumed with Serenās open distrust, a rift grew between Seren and most of his family as he fought to find a way to get back to Rinli, whether that be in the Circle or out of it. In addition, Seren fuelled his bitterness towards his father by misbehaving, attacking Alad Trevelyan where it hurt: his hard won family reputation. Serenās modus operandi only grew more focussed after the death of Oran, whereby Seren used his own guilt as well as his well-burning grudge to punish his father. It was ultimately Serenās misbehaving that made his mother send him to the Conclave in his sisterās place, just to get Seren out from under his fatherās way, and to simultaneously give Seren something to do other than fuel the rift between them.Ā
Itās a grudge Seren held long after his father dies, and in part he revels in the decisions he made and how they would have affected the Set In Stone reputation Alad had crafted for the family. He ultimately never forgives Alad for what he did to Rinli.Ā
Lena Trevelyanās life story is a vendetta against her family. Everything she does both before and almost half-way through her time as Inquisitor is to punish her family for sending her sister to the Circle, and then cutting Niah out of the family completely.Ā
Basically the elder Trevelyan generation are all assholes of varying degree.Ā
Lena and Niah were born very close together, meaning that they were raised together, and where one was the other was in about a three metre radius. Even as children Niah was the sweet caring one, and Lena the rough housing troublemaker, but they were hopelessly devoted to each other, as their mother had little time for them whenever it didnāt involve dressing them up and showing them off to visiting nobility, and their father seemed to lack a personality gene completely.Ā
Niah, in her own way, was Lenaās conscience and impulse control, two things that disappeared completely when Niah accidentally set fire to her curtains when she was eight years old and was immediately taken to the Circle, without a moments hesitation, their father holding Lena back the whole time to stop the girls from reaching each other.Ā
This was the moment that set Lena down a singular path towards open rebellion of everything her parents ever wanted. From the moment Niah was taken, the family cut her out completely, and the other children were not allowed to even speak of her. Each time Lena was forbidden from mentioning or asking about her sister caused the young girl even more resolve, and she took great joy in reminding their mother in particular that she had a third daughter whenever she could, especially in other company. Everything that was asked of her she did the opposite, every moment spent covered in mud, hair unbrushed, mouthing off. Lena Trevelyan made her parents pay for their horrible decision every moment she could, it did not matter how small. She never forgot and she never forgave.Ā
Half the reason Serenās father, the Head of House Trevelyan was so desperate to conserve and maintain the family image was because of Lena.Ā
Alad had the drive to succeed where Lenaās parents failed, and there was little public honour her parents had by the time she was a teenager. it was almost a relief when she disappeared shortly after the Mage Rebellion.
13. What gets them flustered?
Seren gets flustered whenever he seeās Cassandra training when heās meant to be doing something else. Josie makes sure that he sticks to the actual castle when talking with diplomats, because all it takes is one glance at Cassandraās biceps and heās done for.Ā
He gets flustered by women fawning over him, particularly older women. The young ones he can brush off, because in no way do they stand up against Cassandra. But older women do it to make him embarrassed and it works about 90% of the time.Ā
He also gets flustered whenever he overhears people talking about his friends. There is a short percentage where he is either amused, flustered, or angry and it can fluctuate in a moment depending on what theyāre saying. Anything derogatory heās gonna flounce off and plot with either Josie or Sera depending on the status of said talkers.Ā
Lena doesnāt get flustered very often but it usually involves a pretty girl. Initially it doesnāt matter who the pretty girl is, but a pretty girl being cute is a shore fire way to get Lena pretty flustered. She doesnāt know how to talk to pretty girls unless sheās a) a bit drunk b) just finished fighting or c) about to do some fighting.Ā
But considering how much time she spends in all 3 states, she comes across pretty suave most of the time.Ā
But it doesnāt take long before Josie holds all the cards.Ā
Josie has the monopoly in making Lena Trevelyan flustered, and it happens a lot until their relationship really mellows out, which takes a few years. Lena just finds Josephine cute doing anything.
