I watched Easy A tonight for like the five billionth time tonight, and I wish so desperately I was still in touch with my English teacher because every day while studying the book, she would show a different clip of The Scarlet Letter (starring Demi Moore), and as a class we would just laugh and laugh and laugh. We also would sometimes do really weird reenactments of it, and it was awesome.
I had an incredible English teacher. But to me, now as a teacher, what was most incredible was that, unlike many of my other favorite teachers, I never felt we had a deep personal connection. I didn't spend hours in her classroom, swapping books, asking for advice, making rude jokes, eating lunch, or any of the other crazy things I did with my actual favorite teachers. But she was so good at what she did, she made me love a subject I previously hated, she made class so exciting, and every student who came out of her class was successful. She was the only teacher I had that made me like her, entirely on the basis of her teaching skills. I think that is wonderful, and of course I want to be like my chemistry teacher who challenged me more than any one before (and also had a wicked sense of humor), or my history teacher who would talk with me for hours about books and television shows and inspired me to move outside my comfort zone. But in reality, it is teachers like my English teacher who are the ones that really make a difference. Because she didn't just make a different in my life or her favorite students' lives. It was all of her students that left her class more confident, more knowledgeable, and with great amounts of detail about Demi Moore's weird British accent and bathing habits.

The Hundred Foot Journey - Movie Number Three
Like I said, I have only seen three movies this year. I would rank The Hundred Foot Journey third of three.
That isn't saying much, but I really wanted to see it because even though I hate France ('Merica. Just kidding, I actually have reasons. Cool.), I really like French food because of Julia Child ('Merica!!!) and butter, and also that one dude in the previews looked kind of hot.
Also, I saw it was being turned into a movie, so I read the book. It was super boring and I hated it, and to save you some time, go see the movie, make sure everyone is a bigger asshole. and then everyone gets old. I don't know, I don't regularly read a book and hate it this much. It was boring and I literally did not care if there was a terrorist attack and then everyone died. So there is that.
Anyway, I saw the movie with my parents, and it took the five most exciting pages of the book and turned it into a movie. This is not a joke, the title of the book comes from a small portion of the book. There is this whole beginning part that is briefly touched on in the movie, and then after where the movie ends (they changed it slightly), it goes on forever and ever and seemingly never ends.
Whatever, the movie was predictable and I got bored in the middle, but I can say that I am glad they changed the ending, because what they did do was much better than the book. Actually, just in general, they changed a lot, and I think it worked out better (people were not assholes, is basically that.). And that guy from the previews was hot, and so he gets a good score because I am shallow.
His name is Manish Dayal. In real life he has a southern accent. Excuse me while I swoon.
Anyway, my mom loved this movie, my dad thought it was okay, and I am just a bored asshole. Skip it or don't, whatever.

Okay story time. My family was having a party and for some reason we started talking about the Civil War (not an uncommon topic for us) and how everyone forgets that it wasn't actually white people versus black people or whatever. So I said yeah, like remember that one TV show with the Asian Confederate soldier? Which of course no one remembered. But I could not for the life of me think of Pushing Daisies, even though I described the scene perfectly, and I kept thinking it was Arrested Development (probably cause I was hung up on the "I wanted to be a Jedi!" quote) and everyone (particularly my brother) was telling me I was making stuff up (remember this is a party...there were actual adults there). So I googled "asian confederate soldier sword fight jedi" and it finally came up and then I got to say TOLD YOU SO.
