Bonus points if you can read my hand writing.
Oh, my weathered heart.
Nobody ever told her how hard it was going to be growing up so fast
I feel completely abandoned by him
As much as I pretend im okay, that it doesn't bother me
Theres a little girl inside of me who yearns for her father
Who feels like she was chosen last or left to rot
Who feels rejected
Excluded
All because of a wicked woman's jealousy
What did I ever do to her?
I was just a child
And somehow a threat to the safety that was first meant to be mine with my father
Now he's been widdled away
Praying for change
Waiting for his god to rescue me
Yet I have always been waiting for him.

— isa b. this survival hasn't been soft
Some days all you can do is show up
Some days all there is, is a raging river inside of you
Pulsing at the pang of every beat
Grief
Tove Ditlevsen, from a poem featured in There Lives a Young Girl in Me Who Will Not Die: Selected Poems
there exist hours in which kindness must alter its architecture.
hours in which the voice that once consoled must assume a harder geometry- upright, deliberate, refusing the instinct to bend.
i inhabited such an hour.
a friend stood before me already eroded by sorrow, their language sharpened by a grief that had begun to wound indiscriminately.
pain had migrated outward.
it had acquired teeth.
i did not rebuke them in anger.
anger is easy.
anger is noise.
i spoke instead with the colder instrument… clarity.
i told them the boundary.
not loudly, not theatrically, but with the slow authority of someone placing a stone that must remain where it falls.
that suffering does not confer jurisdiction over the hearts of those who remain.
that despair, however legitimate, does not absolve cruelty.
that i would remain beside them in the long corridor of their darkness… but i would not permit their despair to become the architecture in which we all had to live.
the words stood there between us after i finished.
unadorned.
unalterable.
boundaries have a way of sounding like judgment even when they are built from care.
and silence entered the room like incense in an empty cathedral.
time passed.
then came the knowledge that they now lay in the white stillness of a hospital ward.
i will not recount the moment of discovery.
the fact itself is sufficient liturgy.
because the mind- that treacherous archivist- immediately convenes its tribunal.
it replays the conversation with prosecutorial patience.
did my firmness fracture something already failing?
did the line i drew become the final weight on a structure that had been collapsing quietly for years?
reason intervenes.
reason reminds me that a soul does not fall apart because of one sentence, one boundary, one night of necessary truth.
despair is older than that.
despair builds its own cathedrals.
but the intellect is a poor match for the persistence of memory.
the echo of my voice remains.
not as regret.
as gravity.
because boundaries, once spoken, are heavy objects.
and when someone you love is already drowning, the act of refusing to sink beside them can feel indistinguishable from betrayal.
this is the cruelty no one teaches when they preach compassion.
that sometimes the most merciful posture is the refusal to collapse.
that sometimes love requires the discipline of standing upright while another person begs the world to fold.
compassion, in its truest form, is not infinite yielding.
it is structure.
it is the quiet insistence that suffering may be shared but not weaponized.
i do not repent the boundary.
without it there would be nothing left of me to offer them at all.
yet knowledge does not lighten the burden.
i carry it now as one carries sacred architecture- aware that every pillar must hold even when the storm breaks the roof.
and somewhere inside me the question persists like a candle that refuses extinction: whether the sound of that collapse will always resemble my own voice speaking the necessary word.
amen.

In times like these its important to find joy in the small things
Like stepping on air bubbles in ice puddles and crushing them
I wish I could still feel
I wish when I laughed that it came from a belly filled with joy
Now it has become habitual
To adapt to the roaring needs of those who surround me
The ego has a devilishly large appetite for attention
It seems I am covered in thorns,
Red gleams of lights for eyes
Cowering at the thought of interacting with anyone, Of connecting.
Strange and cruel vines always eager to snap at the nearest glance or gesture
Once there was a time where I did not feel these defenses ruptering at every sense of diss-ease,
Waves crash at the thoughts of swimming in these shallow pools,
Drowning, bubbling, wicked waves devour me
Confusion
Is that what he really said?
Is that what he really did to me?
Is that why all these knives and arrows dance
Is that why every single glance, every stare
Feels like daggers
Is that why I have lost my ability to speak
To express
To feel safe in this body.
To exist for anything other than
consumption.
I long for the day.
