Zelda looked out at the gardens she often frequented with Link, watching the sun rise in silence.
Impa had told her to get some rest, but when she’d tried, she’d slept fitfully, her dreams unsettling and dark. Her blankets were too hot, her skin too cold, Sir Rowan’s words ringing in her ears, and Zelda finally couldn’t take it any longer. She’d come out here to try and get some peace, and while the sight of the garden did make her feel somewhat better, it didn’t soothe the storm that was her thoughts at the moment.
Birds chirped in the trees lining the path, and Zelda rubbed her eyes, looking around at the blooming gardens.
The path was lined in delicate flowers with petals in all manner of colors, and small trees that were finishing their spring blooms. The wisteria vine had started to blossom, bright dashes of purple all along the trellis it was confined to, and she could smell its perfume from here. She’d often sit with Link under it when they took walks together, him watching the insects that would land on the petals, her laughing when bees mistook her dress for the flowers.
She still remembered the time a butterfly had landed on a colorful headband she’d been wearing, and Link had carefully gotten it to crawl on his finger so she could see it. She’d called him a bug whisperer, but he’d denied it, saying that horses were more his specialty.
And then a beetle had landed on his nose, and they’d both laughed, the rare sound from Link warming Zelda’s heart.
Her stomach twisted at the memory, and she wrapped her arms around herself, sitting down on the edge of a small fountain that wasn’t currently running. She really should go back inside and try to sleep more, but she knew she wouldn’t have any luck.
Though sitting out here thinking about Link wasn’t doing her any favors.
“Princess?”
Zelda looked up at the soft call, and turned to see Link’s father approach, his crutch rapping quietly against the pathway. He looked as if he’d had an equally restless night, dark circles under his eyes, the shadow of a beard on his chin. His dark hair could use a good comb as well, and his uniform was rumpled like he had slept in it.
“Sir Lucas,” she greeted in a whisper, and he drew beside her, a look in his eye that made her stomach turn.
He didn’t immediately speak, and he sat beside her in silence, watching as the first rays of dawn colored the gardens in an amber light.
“Your highness,” Lucas said quietly, and Zelda swallowed, knowing what was coming. “There have been rumors flying around ever since I returned last night, some realistic, some... rather fantastical. I know not all of them are true, but some of them must be, since the knights have not returned, and your council is in hysterics.”
He turned and looked her in the eye.
“What happened to my son?”
Zelda looked at her feet, her stomach twisting into knots. Lucas hadn’t been at the meeting earlier— he’d taken sone time to help train soldiers at an outpost, and only arrived back late last night. Late enough that he’d slipped Zelda’s mind. But he needed to be told. Link’s only living family deserved an explanation, but she wasn’t sure the words would come out.
“Please Princess,” Lucas said more quietly, and Zelda took in a steadying breath.
“Link... Link has been overtaken by darkness,” she whispered, hating how her throat tightened. No, I promised I wouldn’t cry anymore, stop that! “Sir Rowan returned yesterday alone and injured, and says he saw this happen. Somehow dark magic corrupted Link in the woods, and he turned on the knights he was with. He... he’s little more than a puppet for an unknown evil. That’s all we know.”
Lucas had gone pale as she’d spoken, and he leaned heavily on his crutch, his eyes weighty with shock and a bitter sort of acceptance, like he’d almost been expecting her response.
“Then... Link is...”
“I’m so sorry,” Zelda continued, forcing her voice not to shake. “I shouldn’t have sent him out based on nothing but a silly dream, I should have known the darkness I saw was planning something, and now Link is gone and so are most of our best knights, this... it’s all my fault.”
Her voice broke, but before she could fully break down, Lucas had set a hand on her shoulder, giving her a grieved look.
“Princess, there was no way you could have known,” he said softly. “You did what you could. And Link... Link was prepared to take any action necessary. He agreed this was important. You can’t blame yourself.”
“He’s my best friend and I sent him to die,” Zelda choked out, and Lucas took both her shoulders in his hands, looking her in the eye.
“Princess Zelda. You did not send Link to die. You had no idea of what was going to happen, and you were operating with what information you had,” he said firmly. “Was it wise to send all of our best knights? Perhaps not, but you were doing what you could with what you knew. You cannot blame yourself for this, your highness,” he finished softly. “That sort of thinking can kill you.”
Zelda wasn’t fully convinced, but she gave Lucas a small nod anyway, her whole body feeling weighed down.
“Now don’t tell me how the situation is hopeless. Tell me how we’re going to fix this, and get Link back,” he said, and Zelda shakily breathed in.
Sir Lucas was right. She needed to stop wallowing, and start acting like a princess.
Link needed her to.
“Impa is researching a lead right now. She didn’t say what it was, but she seemed hopeful,” Zelda said, locking her fingers in her lap to stop them from trembling. “She thinks we may be able to save Link, and stop this unknown darkness.”
Lucas had a hand on his chin, looking thoughtful. “If anyone would know of a way, it would be Lady Impa. I’ll have to see if she needs help. I’m sure she’ll find something.”
“I pray so,” Zelda whispered. “In the meantime, we’ve focused on preparing. The council insisted we post a squadron of soldiers outside the woods, just in case Link comes this way.”
Lucas stiffened. “What are they going to do if they find him?” he asked, and Zelda exhaled.
“They’re to use non-lethal force at all costs. But we have no idea what Link is capable of right now, and even then he’s the best sword fighter I’ve ever known, if he attacks... they might not be able to hold back.”
Lucas swallowed. “Perhaps he’ll remain in the woods. Regardless, I think that’s enough of such talk for now. You look exhausted, your highness. You should go back to bed.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” Zelda murmured, and Lucas sighed.
“You should at least attempt to get some more rest. I have a feeling the days ahead are going to be trying for us all,” he said, looking at her. “You’ll need your strength, Princess.”
Zelda sighed, and looked one more time at the sunrise, then at the arbor where the wysteria climbed. “...Fine. But only for a little while.”
Lucas gave her a small smile. “That’s enough for me. Would you like an escort?”
“No, I’ll be fine, thank you,” Zelda said as she stood up, but she hesitated before she left, giving him a grateful look. “...Thank you, Sir Lucas. I’m... I’m so sorry about Link.”
“I know. Now thank me by getting some sleep, your highness,” he replied, and Zelda bid him farewell. Then she made her way back through the gardens and up to her room, her heavy heart just a smidge lighter.
Lucas watched her go, then hunched over himself, the horror that had been slowly building in his chest threatening to overwhelm him.
“Link,” he whispered. “Oh Link... Goddesses... keep him safe.”

This special is from a scene much further in the LU comic. It felt like a fitting way to reflect on the journey that started it all. What an impression it left, as we still feel that sense of adventure all these years later.

Zelda Animated Series and CDI Redesigns, Part 2!!!
Link and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: CDI Games (Faces of Evil, Wand of Gamelon, Zelda's Adventure):
❀I've thought WAY too much about what the CDI games' stories could have been like, had there been a bigger budget and better management. They're not even half bad once you embrace the sillier nature of their world! I also like to think of the CDI games taking place after the Animated Series in their own timeline, so these are the successors of the cartoon Link and Zelda!❀
Link, Squire of Great Courage and Hero of Koridai
This Link's outfit is largely based on his character model, but his clothing is loose and a little too big to reflect his free, outwardly joyful spirit and all the room he has to grow. There's a winged helmet in the game that I incorporated into his hat (This kind of represents how his head is often in the clouds). The boots are fancy just because ^u^ Link also wears a skeleton key to cope with the paranoia of getting stuck somewhere he can't escape from, and for good reason. There are three CDI games, and this Link spends a total one and a half games imprisoned while Zelda must battle monsters to save him. This poor kid's gotta have some issues after that 0.0
I know that the Phillips CDI has a really goofy take on Link. The voice actor and animation make him seem kinda ditzy, but he still displays a good heart and an innocent excitement for adventure. Instead of being offended by the CDI's almost-parody of Link, I decided I'd lean into it, because those character traits are actually pretty unique when done right. I see this Link as more on the younger side (15ish). He's still naive and clumsy and many things still fly over his head, but his innocent and unwavering optimism outshines his physical faults. So what if he's a bit too enthusiastic and prone to wandering off--he also has a heart of gold and is determined to see the best in everyone. (his hidden gift is having a knack for empathy because of some expanded lore/family things I gave him, but I'll save that for later!)
Zelda, Princess of Hyrule and Hero of Gamelon and Tolemac
Like her ancestor from the Zelda Cartoon, this Zelda's outfit reflects her rank. It's embellished with the elegant marks of the royal family (and based on the Zelda designs from Link to the Past and The Wand of Gamelon's cover art), but it's also practical; a perfect balance for a young adventurer. Her 7-stone amulet and circlet are both elements from her design in the 3rd CDI game, as is her slightly lightened hair. I also kind of misinterpreted her wand as a rapier, but she seems like the kind of princess to know how to use one--especially after two entire adventures as the main character (LONG before echoes of wisdom!).
This Zelda is is probably one of the most unique depictions of the princess because of her adventure status, as well as her intense personality (I blame Cartoon Link and Zelda for passing that spunk down, ha!) This Zelda is bold, confident, and smart, and not about to let someone tell her no when she knows now is the time to act. There's a scene in game 2 where an enemy is fading away with a classic, "AAAAgh! You've killed meeeee!" and she immediately responds, "GOOD." >w< I like thinking that she and Link have been friends since childhood, and because she's usually the one making decisions, Link just sort of follows along until he starts to mature and becomes his own man a bit later in life. Also, Zelda may be tough, but she's definitely got a sweet spot for her dear friend (maybe more?), and is always looking out for him. The feeling is deeply mutual =)
Zelda Animated Series and CDI Redesigns, Part 1!!!
Link and Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: The Animated Series:
❀This series and Zelda CDI certainly deviate from the standard Zelda formula, and have since been memed into oblivion for it. As for me, I think the memes and dated animation just make these series more charming and funny--they really are like time capsules, and what's more, not all their ideas are half bad! The Animated Series actually introduced the idea of Link having a horse and a fairy companion and fighting alongside the princess, all with just the world of Zelda 1 to go off of!
I tried to encapsulate my feelings for them in the re-designs, essentially trying to bring out the best of who these characters are/could be. Here's some analysis for the Cartoon Duo below!❀
Link, Hero of Hyrule and Guardian of the Triforce:
I didn't do too much with his clothes other than mute some colors and add some embroidery and chain mail. It's just enough to show his rank as Zelda's bodyguard, but nothing too fancy, since he's actually pretty humble when it comes to material gains. One of his first lines in the series is actually him complaining about cushy castle life and longing for a life outdoors with the bare minimum to sustain him. I like to think Link grew up fending for himself at an early age, and the road is all he knew to call home. Now his home is beside his princess. He can always rely on her, and she can put up with all his antics and corny jokes ;)
I like to think that these designs are sort of Link and Zelda's "Post Series" outfits, too (No I don't count Captain N as canon to this world, just a reflection of its potential). As such, Link has sort of "mellowed out". Don't get me wrong, he's still very much a loverboy for his princess, still a bit snarky, sometimes headstrong, and probably owns an entire encyclopedia of hilarious, cheesy one-liners. But even though he may need someone to reign him in now and then, he's also an exceptional fighter. He's mastered sword techniques that few have achieved, and has a strong sense of justice. And on his best days, Link can be quite charming and thoughtful, and fiercely protective of his loved ones. I tried to put some of that strength, wit, and confidence into his features here.
Zelda, Princess of Hyrule and Wielder of Wisdom:
I had a lot of fun with Zelda's new outfit! It takes heavy inspiration from the Zeldas of Breath of the Wild and Hyrule Warriors with just enough of her own flair thrown in. It's more regal than her cartoon clothing but just as practical, showing how she's grown into a mature ruler who's just as comfortable handling disputes as she is rushing into battle with a boomerang, her magic, and a bow by her side.
In fact, in the series, she's often depicted as a more competent monarch than her father the king, and there's no doubt that she will one day make a wise and just queen. By this point she has also gotten a better handle on her emotions and is a voice of reason, as well as a foil to Link's loud personality. That said, she can also match his sarcasm and his flirts line for line, and loves to tease him. Which only makes him fall in love with her more. Was that her plan all along? Experts are still stumped to this day. =)
