Hey all! Been working on a little something to ease myself back into drawing Heartstopper pages. I’m so proud of this mini-comic! I hadn’t drawn proper comic pages for over six months and I’d been really worried that my drawing skills would have worsened in that time. But I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been with a mini-comic. Thanks for your support this year and I really hope you enjoy this little story.
Why donate when AO3 already has money?
I see a lot of conversation floating around about how AO3 regularly makes over its goals, and while that’s true, I think people don’t quite get the situation.
1. Donating $10 gets you “membership”. This allows you to vote in OTW Board elections. Does this ultimately matter? Maybe, maybe not. Many past elections have been uncontested or had candidates who were functionally pretty similar. On the other hand, being involved in the political process is never a waste. However much AO3 already has, if you want a vote, you need to join.
2. OTW’s fundraising goals, especially during the pandemic, have been… unrealistic. They’ve pared it down to what they need to stay open. That’s not a real goal. That’s a kindness to not panic fandom during trying times.
If we want AO3 to invest in serious code improvements like making the damn no-fandom tag wrangling possible again or actually completing those plans for a block feature, that means more money than just staying barely afloat. If we want OTW to expand what it does–image hosting on AO3, for example–that means money in reserve, an endowment, interest income. These are good and important things for the long-term health of any charity or arts organization.
I haven’t been involved in years, so I don’t know the internal discussions around money, but it’s obvious from the outside that AO3 is basically treading water. Every six months or year or so, some big thing comes down the pike that makes AO3′s traffic go nuts or creates some massive headache for the support staff. To move past this kind of status quo, OTW would need serious money, far, far beyond what they get in drives now–and I’m talking the full amount they get, not the absurd initial goals.
So yeah, for people who know tech budgets or who understand how nonprofits that last for decades, not a couple of years, work, it still makes sense to donate even if AO3 has blown past its nominal donations goal.
Honestly re: code improvements - I know more than one person (myself included) who would happily work on new features and big fixes if we could, but as far as I can tell, nobody who isn’t a super-well-established dev is allowed to, and there’s zero route outlined to getting there. It’s extremely frustrating because I want to help AO3 be better and can’t.
Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of bitching over the years. IDK how much things have improved, and I was never really involved with that part when I did work for OTW. I’d definitely like to see AO3 get a little better at integrating with how usual open source projects work. I know there’s a lot of talent it has missed out on because the barriers to helping code are too high.
