Field Visit and Site Analysis

For this project, we visited F. Nilandhoo to conduct a detailed site analysis in order to gain a better understanding of the on-the-ground urban dynamics at both the regional and island levels.

This allowed us to identify vulnerabilities that could stymie the development of a future resilient island.

My concept is derived from Phytoplanktons ( Dinoflagellates), their autotrophic ability to make their own nutrients and energy; or their self-sustainability. I want my design to be 'sufficient by itself' to it's users; having it's own sufficient energy, water, heat, light, comfort, space and function for the daily use of the residents.

My design takes advantage of the natural surrounding, as much as possible in order to achieve this.

The pinup board for this part 2Aiii includes a compilation of the previous 2 parts; precedent study and conceptual narrative with schematic plans.

A few models were made to explore the conceptual stage.

Conceptual Narrative & Schematic Plans

This assignment was the start of the design process.

In this part we explored concepts to produce schematic plans and conceptual forms.

I came up with Ample; sufficient for my concept.

The pinup board also included sections and perpective drawings of the form.

Precedent Study

I chose Fennell House by Robert Harvey Oshatz for my precedent study.

Fennell house is a floating dwelling located on the Williamette River, Portland.

It's concept derived from the curves and ripples of a gentle river.

The curved glue-laminated beams balance with the rich hue of exposed Western Cedar shingles in curvilinear patterns and copper roofing.

The home is filled with natural light that which seems to cascade from the sloping ceiling and exposed beams into the living room. Glass fills in the gaps in fbe structure, making it lighter and more translucent, with subtle reflections that imply depth. Clerestory windows open to allow natural ventilation.

The board was hand made and it was fun to explore different coloring mediums!

Fluid Sensation and Resilient Masterplan Concept Submission

MASTERPLAN

The ‘Bissaaveli’ settlement is intended to be a cohesive extension of F. Nilandhoo. The organic appearance and connections of the settlement complement the fluid nature of the site; the expansive, and exuberant lagoon. Life in the lagoon will further prosper as the structures are designed with hulls to host diverse communities of marine life. The element of coexistence and connectivity is prevalent in this sense as well.

The central communal features coupled with the radial arrangement draws inspiration from the titular concept. Additionally, the inhabitants’ main livelihood comes from salt harvesting, as an effective means of taking advantage of the climate and context. These spaces also serve as attractions in addition to the underwater viewing spaces.

This self-sustaining community only allows the use of green vehicles and is designed to utilize natural resources like wind, sun, and currents to create an environmentally-sound settlement.

Workshop on Masterplan

The purpose of the workshop was to motivate the class and draft a few conceptual ideas to start off the project with enthusiasm.

The work was carried out in groups giving a very competitive and intense atmosphere.

Each group selected a different location for their masterplan, which was based on the lagoon of F.Nilandhoo (First come first serve basis 😔).

A SWOT analysis was conducted out for the locations we chose, to identify factors that influence the design's functionality.

Our group was able to decide a main income source of Masterplan as; Salt Harvesting

Last but not least, the concept we came up with for our masterplan was "Bissaaveli", in dhivehi it means - "saltwater pond surrounded by a strip of sand".

Creative Mapping - Projected Implications

Students were required to create a snapshot and present hard factual data to show human growth in a specific Maldivian region- in our case Shaviyani Atoll - and to reveal the catastrophic repercussions of our current lifestyle choices.
