"do you think this friendship is the best you can do?" is supposed to refer to house's resistance to pursue romance, but damn if it doesn't sound to my ears like nolan is asking house to pursue something romantic with wilson, specifically

"wilson is not a consolation prize" (i feel ILL)

and just. god . . . the last couple of lines. house being resigned to always coming second to whatever new woman wilson is currently dating. house only being able to comfort himself with the knowledge that wilson will lose said woman eventually, letting house slink back into first place by default. house planning on living the rest of his life like that because he doesn't think he deserves any better.

and all of this happening at the end of season 6, shortly after wilson bought an apartment for the two of them and bought house an organ in an effort to pick a piece of furniture that wilson felt reflected himself. and when house has been trying so hard and staying clean and going to therapy and learning not to repress everything quite so much, and growing closer to his best friend in this home they were supposed to share. and then sam came back, and within weeks house is asked to move out so sam can move in and he's in second place again, because that's where he'll always be.
