James P. Johnson: 1942-45 Piano Solos
I’ve been in a James P. Johnson groove for awhile as we get ready to issue some of his outstanding works that lie in the Columbia and Victor vaults. This CD featured on NPR contains some JPJ that is not in our set, but is still a must-have.

Lou Donaldson: Born November 1, 1926
Lou Donaldson: Still Swinging at 90
Tom Reney’s 90th birthday nod to Sweet Papa Lou Donaldson is right on the mark. Donaldson possesses one of the most soulful, expressive and beautiful tones on the alto saxophone and he can outswing and outfunk the best of them. Some may damn him for success and longevity, but they are missing the point.

Drummer Brian Blade, who recently turned 46, is a most unusual and unique drummer who’s been in demand with a range of artists from Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan to Kenny Garrett and Wayne Shorter, finding time to record and tour with his own Fellowship Band since 1997. Ted Panken has posted two thorough interviews he did with Blade in 2001 and 2008.
