In love with one of the most promising hufflepuffs

So. Beatrice and Ismelda’s new friendship. I’ve seen multiple people’s opinions floating around, and the general mood seems to be that it’s a little shady, but probably nothing to really worry about. And I generally agree. So I wanted to take a look at the pros and cons.

Let’s get the bad out of the way first. Yes, it is a bit strange for a 16 year-old to seek out a friendship with a 12 year-old they have (presumably) never interacted with before. Bea is extremely vulnerable right now, and Ismelda is not exactly the most positive influence. This has all the makings of a toxic relationship, and it’s only natural for Penny to worry about her traumatised little sister, especially if she’s suddenly pulling away after being so close in the past.

That being said, I think it’s been pretty well established that while Ismelda can be quite…cynical, she’s ultimately harmless. Her attitude stems from fear and insecurity, and in that sense Beatrice may have found someone who understands her far better than Penny does right now. Also, besides being a bit more sassy and far less starry-eyed, we haven’t seen Bea going full delinquent. Her new mindset is only logical after all she’s been through, and while it’s sad she lost her innocence this young, we all wake up to the darkness of the world at some point.

At 12 years old, Beatrice is still undoubtedly a child in need of guidance, even without the added trauma from last year. But 12 is also generally the age where kids start to try and develop their own identity, away from their families. Experimenting with your looks, wanting to hang out with the “cool kids”, trying to act more grown-up, pushing back against what authority figures (including older siblings) are telling you…who didn’t go through this phase?

Bea is dealing with trauma, which everyone does in different ways to begin with, but she’s also just plain growing up. Now, I’m definitely not in favour of just leaving her and Ismelda alone, I absolutely want to keep an eye on both of them to make sure they don’t start feeding on each other’s negativity. And it probably would be best for Beatrice if she could talk to Penny about her feelings and generally deal with the situation in a more constructive way. But you can’t force someone to do that. Bea will have to get to that point in her own time, and the way Penny and MC are interfering in her life right now is not helping. By all means, watch over the kid and try to help in any way you can. But I think Penny is also going to have to accept that Beatrice is growing into her own person, and her big sister can’t protect her from everything.
