βMom died on the first day of school. Β Sheβd been really sick that entire summer. Β And she passed away on a Monday. Β At 7 AM. Β Almost exactly the time Iβd be leaving for school. Β I donβt think I fully grasped how traumatic it was for me. Β I was there when she took her last breath. Β I comforted my little sister while she said goodbye. Β And the next week I had to start classes at a brand new school. Β I was a junior at the time. Β All the teachers knew what happened. Β And they had told all the students, so everyone was pitying me when I showed up. Β I met Alex that very first day. Β We were in choir together. Β We became friends almost immediately, but we didnβt start dating until we were both cast as leads in Seussical The Musical. Β We became more serious during college, and we ended up getting married right after graduation. Β I felt so sad that my mom couldnβt see any of it. Β Every time a big event would happen, it would be like, sheβs not here. Β And sheβs never going to be here. Β I was a moody, shitty teenager when she died. Β And Iβm having this whole life where I become the person Iβm supposed to be, and she doesnβt get to see any of it. Β Sheβs not going to see me graduate. Β Sheβs not going to meet my children. Β And it especially sucks that sheβll never get to meet Alex. Β We lit a lantern at our wedding to signify that my mom was still with us. Β It was a beautiful ceremony, and afterwards we took our honeymoon in Hawaii. Β A few days into the trip, I received a call from my oldest friend Meredith. Β She sounded excited. Β Sheβd just discovered a picture of our childhood soccer team, and there was a boy who looked just like Alex. Β When I showed Alex the photo, he confirmed that it was him, heβd played goalie on that team. Β I just started laughing. Β It was such a God moment. Β It was a moment when everything felt connected. Β Alex and I had known each other as children, back when my mom was still alive. Β The first thing I did was call my dad. Β I asked him if he remembered anything about the Swanβs Dermatology Soccer Team. Β βI remember the goalie,β he replied. βDuring the games heβd always sit down in the net and play with the dirt. Β And your mother thought it was hilarious.ββ #quarantinestories
