Lydia’s Fashion Illustrations

I really enjoyed this task and it has given me the opportunity to experiment.

Yesterday, Sheffield Hallam University visited us and gave us lots of information on their fashion design courses. We listened to them and then looked at their students work which was amazing to see. Then we took part in two workshops. The first workshop being collaging on paper with a limited time. I loved doing this and found it interesting to see what can be made in such a short time. Then we did draping on small mannequins in pairs. We were provided fabric shapes, zips, safety pins, thread and much more to create a design. I enjoyed doing this but wasn’t as satisfied with the end result, though I do like the layering of zips and the bows.

Today, I illustrated this met gala look. I drew it free hand and used water colour as my media. This was my second attempt, as originally I was going to use oil pastels but they didn’t take to the paper very well and I learnt that some colours like grey /white won’t show up on darker colours. I enjoyed this task but I wish I would have left the background plain.

These are my pieces that Ive made to practice a variety of media’s on, such as: soft pastels, coloured pencil, ink, watercolour, collaging, pro markers and acrylic paints. I drew each of these illustrations free hand and then applied the media. I love how each piece turned out and Im glad that I’ve done these as it’s given me extra practice with media’s that I often use and given me tone opportunity to experiment with new media’s that I have never used.

This is some feedback I got from my peers on my illustration portfolio. I am going to take this on board and use it to make improvements to my work. Im happy with the feedback I received and think it’s helped me a lot.

For my final illustration, I began by sketching the face using sketching pencils and then used watercolour, fine liner, berol pen and a black marker to create lines and patches of colour to match the art style I wanted to create. I like how this turned out but next time I would take more time making sure facial proportions are accurate before adding media.

For this piece I used sketching pencils, Berol pen, fine liner, paintbrushes and ink. I started off by sketching it out freehand and correcting it to get the proportions correct. I then fine lined it and rubbed out excess lines from the sketch. I used a berol pen and water to create a watercolour-like effect. For the larger areas that needed to be black, I used ink, as it was more efficient for covering a large area. This task allowed me to devolop my skills using Berol pen, which I really enjoy using. I found this task easy and really enjoyed it.

In this task, I was to complete 2 faces along with singular facial features, to develop my skills in drawing faces. I used grid method for both illustrations which helped me determine the proportions of each facial feature. I found the first face easy, along with the singular facial features. However, the second illustration I found to be more challenging. Even using the grid method, I struggled to get the proportions correct for the lower face shape/ jawline. After many adjustments, I eventually made it correct by doing experimentation with the grid measurements. Im glad I got to do this task because it has helped me develop my skills in illustrating faces and has taught me ways of correcting mistakes.

For this task, I cut three printed illustrations in half and sketched the other half to make a full illustration. This task has tested my skills in visually copying an illustration. I found this task enjoyable and simple and I like the final result.

I enjoyed this task and think that it will help me in future when creating my own designs.

For this task, I drew 4 hands in different positions, to help me to gain an understanding in the proportion of hands and how they look based on the position. I began by trying to sketch the first hand by using the step-by-step reference on my sheet seen in the video. I found the first hand challenging to make look realistic and struggled with the proportions of the fingers. After I had completed the first hand, I moved onto the next three hands, which I found much simpler. I feel like this task has helped me improve my knowledge of illustrating hands and that it will come in handy when completing future illustrations. I enjoyed this task and found it useful. If I were to do this again, i wouldn’t do anything different but I would hope that I could improve on the proportions of the hands.

Here I followed on from learning about S- curve illustrations with my own s-curve figures that I created. I did this free hand and I began by drawing my S shape to portray where I’m going to pose the figure. I then drew lines with my ruler to help guide the different angles of the body. For example, on the first illustration, the hips would be on a slight tilt, so I used lines to make this easier. I then started sketching the figure following the lines I drew previous. I loved this task and really enjoyed it. It’s helped me develop a deeper understanding of the S-curve and the different ways it can be shown in illustrations.

This is my illustration of the S curve figure. I created this by using grid method. This has helped me practice proportions and poses of figures. I enjoyed this task and found it quite helpful.

I found this task challenging at first as I began with drawing heads which were to ensure it would be a 9 headed figure. However, I found that the heads were unequal in size and weren’t in line with each other which would defeat the point of using this method to make sure it is a 9 headed figure. To correct my mistake I used a ruler to measure equal gaps where I would draw my heads which helped me to make them all the same size. After overcoming this challenge, I then continued and used my heads I had just drawn to reference the length of the figure and the correct proportions, which made this task easier. I enjoyed illustrating the 9 headed figure and I like the result.
