The question caught him off guard and Magnus turned to stare at her. He couldn’t tell if the woman was only humoring him or sincere in telling him his vision was beautiful. Magnus always thought so, and his friends supported him but most people that he was crazy to throw away his money.
Making a living was a challenging question to answer. “I have a roof over my head and I get to do what I love every day. That is all I need. I don’t bring in much money but…” He shrugged. No need to go into the trust fund, dead parents, and sob story, after all. He was fine. He was always fine. Magnus was a survivor above all else.
Lydia shrugged a little, shifting her weight. She felt like she had veered into unwelcome territory. She took a gentle nibble of her purchase and politely chewed and swallowed. She smiled, warmly, inspired by the taste of it at least in part.
“Having a passion for something is pretty rare these days,” she said. “I wouldn’t knock it. Sounds like you know more than I do,” she said, glancing down at the print on her own shirt. She looked like a uniformed pastry-and-coffee drone, no matter who she was.

James had spent the last HOUR searching for his cat and he was beginning to wonder if it would be a week until he saw her next. He swore that he spent half of his time at Hogwarts searching for her when she went to explore the castle grounds – most of the time he felt like he should leave her be and let her explore but what if something happened to her? As he saw a person near the edge of the forest, he ran up to her. “HEY, have you seen my—” He paused, realising who she was holding. “OH, you found my cat!”
“Oh, this is a... cat? A domestic cat, I mean,” Lydia said, blinking a few times as she looked up at the boy and his mop of dark hair. Her thumb brushed to tend the little one just a bit while she thought it over. “How’d she get out here?” she asked, just making sure she wasn’t handing an innocent, possibly injured animal over to someone who might lie to her. She had never quite gotten the impression that James was the domestic pet type.

“What would you want to help me with? Vampire or not. I’m not exactly the most popular person around,” Lydia said. She knew that there was a certain way in which she’d never belong among the people she had invaded, least of all when she was Alec Lightwood’s former fiancee and there was already so much tension. “Wouldn’t want you getting even more of a bad rep,” she said dryly, maybe a little playfully at her own expense.

“Well – you could stop assuming we’re all mindless animals with a thirst for mundane blood,” Alaric pointed out. “You seem to forget that most Downworlders were mundane once, too. We’ve experienced the shitty end of the stick when it comes to being thrown headfirst into this world. Why would we want to inflict that on anybody else?”
“I know. That’s what I’m saying I understand. I get it, and I’m trying to get it more.” Lydia looked at him, her eyes trained and earnest. “I’ve seen more cooperation between Shadowhunters and the Downworld here in New York than anywhere else, perhaps strangely enough, and I’m trying to get it.”

“ there might have been a better way to go about it, for sure. but i can’t say i don’t understand the motivation. “ lydia toed lines a lot, but she hadn’t always done that.

Carefully, he removed the sticky, flaky pastry from the case and placed it in one of his iconic purple boxes. It was all about style if nothing else. Taking it to the cash register, Magnus rang her up and gave her the change. “I would bake for stress relief during high school and college. I would make both Indonesian and Dutch delicacies because that was what I grew up with. Then, as I traveled, I added more recipes. Soon enough, I decided opening a bakery and doing what I loved was more important than making a ton of money.”
Lydia, for a moment, just kept holding out her hand when the man handed her the change. She kept watching him, taken in by the way he explained his passion. It was different from how she viewed her own profession and stake in pastries and other baked goods. Coffee, too. Maybe she understood coffee better, but he made it sound like something that made her feel a hollow in her abdomen that wasn’t a sweet-tooth. “Uh... yeah, that’s beautiful,” she said. it was the first thing she thought to say. “Do... Do you make a living, here?” she asked, expressing concern.

“I guess so, when it comes to particularly violent criminals, but they’re protected by the law – everyone has the same rights, and if those are violated by a police officer, then they’d get in trouble for it. Even if it’s hard to be fair, you still have to be.”
“I guess, in some ways, our rules are the opposite. I know... I want to be fair to the Downworlders, but I don’t want mundanes who never asked for their lives to be changed to end up mixed up in this. I’ve seen what that does to people, and I don’t know how I’m expected to be fair in that situation. If you have a recommendation, I’m listening,” Lydia said.

“I have a few actually and I like everything I sell so it’s more up to you.” Magnus moved to a case toward the end where he kept everything with nuts out of concern for customers who had allergies. “What are you looking for? Pecan rolls? Almond shorties? Traditional baklava? I learned that recipe from a grandmother in the countryside of Greece. About as authentic as you can get.”
His prices were low and he could only keep them that way because of his trust fund. Otherwise, he would have had to close a year prior.
“The last one,” Lydia said, smiling brightly and speaking with a certain amount of impulse. She noted the price on the card and quickly fished out her wallet and retrieved a note that would more than cover the cost and the tax. It occurred to her that cash might be more useful to him than a card, though she didn’t want to ask. “It must be nice to get to the heart of... what you’re doing,” she added, respectfully.

“I didn’t realize,” Lydia admitted. “I suppose the Institute does provide enough shelter from the sun,” she said, reasoning it out for herself. “Is there...” She paused, not sure if it was the right question to ask. “I know that there are certain... rules and discretion the Clave would expect me to follow, but is there anything... I need to do for you?” He had touched her conscience a little, and she wasn’t quite sure what to do with that.

Alaric just gave a quick, short nod. At least she saw it? “I do. I’m a police officer,” he replied, shifting in his seat again. “Why?”
“I just wonder if you ever feel that there are certain people that it’s... hard to be fair to. In that profession,” she said. Lydia knew little about the mundane world as far as its practical operations as they were separate from the Shadowhunters’ domain.

“That’s a difficult question to answer. The Accords on their own aren’t the problem. It’s how they’re used, and more importantly, it’s your attitude towards us,” Alaric explained. “I don’t know much about law, or politics. I just know that Shadowhunters think we’re worth less than they are because of our demon blood, and that causes them to be unfair to us.”
Lydia took a breath and tried -- she really did try -- to weigh her upbringing, her prejudices that sprung from it, and the reality she had seen, particularly here in New York. “... I guess it’d sound pretty empty to say that you are not worth less than me.” She could really only assert something for herself, when it came to something that big. “... You have a job in the mundane world, don’t you?”

Seeing the blonde on her knees at the edge of the forest was confusing. Alec looked around, as though unsure if she was with someone else. Although there was no one around them and he made his way over, feet barely making a sound despite his tall frame. “Uh, Lydia?” He said, looking down at his friend and blinking in surprise at the tiny creature in her arms. “Are… What are you doing?”
Lydia looked up at Alec guiltily, her eyes wide and seeking his -- way up there from down on the ground. She had managed to get the creature up onto her knees and she pulled it close to her chest, protective and discreet. She squirmed a little as the creature did, unsure about this level of closeness. “I thought it might be hurt or rejected.”

“We were doing what we were supposed to,” Alaric pressed. They hadn’t done anything wrong, and yet… The losses they suffered were immeasurable. “We followed the plan, attacked Valentine. Then that Wayland boy touched the sword, and– you know.” Alaric shifted in his seat, feeling the hairs on the back of his neck standing up at the memories. He couldn’t help but feel that he should’ve been there, even if it wouldn’t have changed anything. “Less than a dozen Shadowhunters died, am I correct? We almost lost our entire pack.”
Lydia was not unmoved, and she didn’t try to hide the fact that the magnitude of the werewolves’ loss touched her. Her eyes took a moment to clear their focus, then she tried to meet the man’s eyes. “I understand that. I was... just trying to ask about your response. Before.”
