A reminder that the man is anti establishment because he is vividly aware of the faults of said establishment. 

He's a top detective for the ADA, which functions as the ‘twilight’ protectors in this world. I think sometimes with all the talk of light and dark we forget that. His years of  experience there aren't going to have been the sunshine and rainbows of humanity. 

Do you think Fukuzawa would have named someone his heir who is that innocent of the world? 

Yes, while Kunikida (as far as we know) doesn't have the dark past of other characters, he's not unworldly. He rigidly adheres to his ideals, not because he lacks the life experience to see them as the impossible dream they are. But because he's fighting to make that impossible dream a reality. Not to start quoting musicals here.. But no matter how hopeless that endevour actually is.

- I'd argue they parallel SSKK just as much as SKK (if not more)

Thanks for asking. I believe the priority is "popular characters".

Interestingly they did announce a dark era manga adaptation many years ago but it never saw the light of the day.

but also may I suggest the artist Hideki who made a lot of the kunizai focused anthology chapters

or Guru Mizoguchi, who I think has only done one anthology chapter but their art style is SO YUMMY

They live in my head rent free 🥲.

Now on a more important note:

If we take Merriam-Webster's definitions of stoic we get:

- "A person who accepts what happens without complaining or showing emotion"

Which both is and isn't true for Kunikida, he acts like this around people he looks up to like Fukuzawa or Ranpo, but around anybody else (Dazai) he is the first one to complain.

- "Not affected by or showing passion or feeling

especially : firmly restrained in response to pain or distress"

Again true but not. He is easily the most passionate person at the Agency, and one of the most emotional. But he does try to restrain himself in moments of distress, regardless of how well he does it.
