it's so late in the evening that even the airport feels deserted, which is to say: it isn't busy enough for them to need to weave through lingering crowds on their way down fluorescent-lit walkways. the lounge they'd been camping out at is close to their terminal, which means it's a bit of a walk to get to anything even moderately interesting. natsumi amuses herself by looking outside to her left and towards fellow travellers waiting for boarding, the brightly lit runways past huge windows.
"does it make me a bad senior if i admit i haven't really seen it yet?" it's not for lack of trying, but the upload of kismet's new music video had coincided with work and travel. natsumi had found herself first unable to catch enough of a break to watch it uninterrupted and then too unconcentrated, her gaze sliding off her tiny phone screen until she realised she'd been staring at nothing at all for a handful of seconds at a time. she'd eventually given up the venture entirely, vowing to get on it back home in her bed, after a long rest. nobody would ask about it until they were back home anyway.
but earlier, in the car, she'd at least listened to the single. "it's a cute song though. feels a bit like something we might've done, back when." not that natsumi holds much nostalgia for serene's earlier, cuter releases. kismet's take on it is a little more interesting. there's a bit more edge to it. "feels like it'd suit them. how'd you like it?"
natsumi is genuinely interested in this, because miori's relationship to kismet as a whole is just that little strained, enough so for her thoughts on the group to be worth discussion. and shop talk is preferable over the idle small talk they'd make otherwise, about mediocre airport food and what to watch on the plane.
Miori canât help but chuckle as she runs a finger along the stark-white walls of the airport.
âNo. Donât tell anyone I said this, but I think if anyone deserves a break from idoldom, itâs us. I just haveââ Her fingernail catches on a flaw in the grout, and she snatches her hand away with a quiet, annoyed hiss. ââreasons. That I made sure to watch it.â
She feels a little awkward, so she observes the new chip in her nail instead of Natsumi. Itâs ridiculous to feel awkwardâmany of the Serene members are well aware of whatâs been agitating their leader lately. Itâs especially ridiculous to feel awkward in front of this specific Serene member.
âIt was great,â Miori says. âKismetâs great.â She thinks for a second, feeling like she should say something else, but there it is again, that discomfort whenever she thinks about the group as a whole, even if itâs only one member that leaves a foul taste in her mouthâeven if itâs realistically nobodyâs fault. Sheâs beat herself up about this enough, told herself to just grow up and get over it, tried forcing herself to be nice, tried taking Mio on sister outings, but nothingâs seemed to work. She barely even likes thinking about Mio, much less talking about her. So itâs something of another way for her to push herself when she asks Natsumi, cautiously, far too casually:
âWhat do you think of Mio, by the way?â
Mioriâs talked circles around the topic more times than she can count, and yes, mostly with Natsumi. Nothing, though, seems to budge the wall thatâs forged itself between the Mochizuki sisters. That familiar, nauseous feeling that builds in Miori whenever Mioâs a topic of conversation is starting to well up. So, as usual, she chickens out. And, as usual, that comes in the form of her switching immediately to logic mode.
âHer dancingâs good,â she babbles before Natsumi can answer her question. âI think her singing is okay, but sheâs young and still has training to do. Sheâs pretty good with variety, and I think she fits the concepts. But Kismet is doing great. Theyâre going to make a real big splash in the industry. I'll probably be a Cosmo sometime soon.â
Sheâs been talking too much. She snaps her mouth shut and ducks her head, face burning hot with shame. Even in the empty halls, with no one to witness her but her best friend, Miori canât help but feel like a child. Not like the leader who carried Serene through over a decade of idoldom, but that same stupid, useless child who boarded the first plane out of Japan with her mother when she was young.
thread .03âstarter for @dionyxux, youngjaeâs apartment, a summer night in 2025.
Itâs nights like these that make Miori appreciate all the work it took to get to this pointâthe point where sheâs comfortable enough to lounge in her scrappiest pajamas, eating the sweetest ice cream, drinking the darkest of winesâand, of course, chatting with one of her closest friends.
Sheâs well aware that, at this very hour, there are trainees and rookies grueling away in the KH and Adagio buildings alike. Itâs approaching that end of the month where trainee evaluations are coming upâitâs a blessing in and of itself to be surprised when she remembers that still happens.
Youngjae is one of her favorite people to remember those days withâthe days of long, hard, seemingly thankless work; and the nights, too, where idols like them would lie awake and wonder if this was all in vain. Axis and Serene may not have had quite the same career trajectory, but the level of work was all the same between them both. And as the groupsâ two leaders, those sleepless nights felt even longer.
So. Nights like this, where they can recline on the couch like languid cats, purr over the new crystal decanters Miori purchased last week, and gossip about the state of the industryâthese arenât anything she takes for granted.
Tonightâs not much for relaxing, though. They killed some time with bad movies and cheap gossip, some shallow laughs that didnât feel quite right. But this isnât why Youngjae invited her over, she can tell. Heâs in one of those moodsâMioriâs come to know them well. Heâs been seeming agitated tonightâshe can take any number of guesses as to why, whether itâs dissatisfaction with Axisâ direction, or the way the public is always seeming to misunderstand him. Miori lifts her wineglass to her lips, observing him with a critical eye as she takes an unhurried drink. Eventually, she sighs, kicks off her slippers, and pushes off the couch to snatch the half-empty bottle off the table. She pulls the cork off and leans forward to fill Youngjaeâs glass, still in his hand, much more than is customary.
When she leans back, completely graceless and completely uncaring of that, she takes a deep, lazy pull from the bottle, keeping her eyes fixed on his. When she sets the bottle back on the table, a half-kind, half-defiant challenging smile is barely tugging at her lips.
âSo. Are we done beating around the bush? Or are you going to tell me whatâs bothering you?â
thread .02âstarter for @tosummers, kh entertainment practice rooms
âOne, and, two, and, dah, dah, dahâŚâ
Dancing has never been Mioriâs strong suit. Just as she anticipated, though, with Kismetâs comeback, she got roped in to make a couple TikToks. âStyleâ has been stuck in her head for the past couple days, so as ridiculous as she finds the new trend of tapping in idols from other groups for shorts and reels, she doesnât entirely mind listening to this song over.
Maraâs another main vocalist in KHâitâs how Miori ended up getting closer to her. Miori, like her stepfather, mostly enjoys music through the ways it connects people. So it wasnât too hard to seek out the main vocalist of her junior group and build a connection from thereâand now, Mara is the member of Kismet Miori is closest to. Regrettably. And thatâs not a dig at MaraâMiori looks sidelong across the room at Mio. Main dancer. This would be a good excuse to go talk to her, she thinks. But the thought of it somehow makes Mioriâs brain short-circuitâhow do you have a conversation, again?
This is embarrassing. Sheâs almost thirty-two, for Godâs sake, and she canât talk to some kid just because they happen to have a shared connection with a man that Miori happens to hate. She steels herself forces her feet to angle toward Mio, but it feels like they wonât move.
She sighs. It would be nice to have a little sister. Sheâs getting in her own wayâshe should give her therapist a call, she thinks. But for now, she just needs to figure out this damn count. So her feet turn away and carry her toward Mara by the water station.
âHey.â Miori folds gracefully to sit on the floor beside her, legs tucked comfortably to her side. âIâm so used to Sereneâs choreography style. I swear, Iâm forgetting how to learn new dancesâespecially with you kidsâ crazy concepts these days. Care to help me out?â
off duty, with @luxuriantly - early july, at night, in an airport
they've been through this a number of times, so often that the repetition's morphed from mind-numbing to soothing back to infuriating. or maybe natsumi's just that edge of tired, worn out like the decade-old t-shirt she sleeps in when she's staying with her parents, that last remnant of girlhood she can hold onto with clenched fists.
she shifts again, the fourth time within the minute, but the chairs aren't going to get more comfortable no matter what. the carefully curated airport fit is inconvenient in that the knot tying her blouse keeps digging into her spine when she leans back. she's wired, but a glance around tells her that this isn't an affliction shared by many: half her groupmates are drowsing, two of the managers are bent over a laptop discussing things natsumi wants nothing to do with. she lets her gaze travel around the lounge, a little furtively. moments later she spots the ray of light shining through the dark clouds of her night: miori's scrolling on her phone.
far be it for her to assume that the duty free will be in the least interesting, but a distraction is needed, and so natumi gathers her purse and checks that her phone's in her pocket before she approaches. there's space on the leather couch on miori's left, enough that she could sprawl out and try to close her eyes, passing time until boarding in that haze between awake and the sort of half-asleep that you need to force. natsumi doesn't sit.
"hey," she says instead, voice low enough not to disturb anyone in the vicinity. "miori. you wanna go shopping?"
Dance challenges, TikTok trends, the battlefield that is vying to be the hot audio of the weekâMioriâs head spins when she thinks about how hard it must be to fight it out for fame as a young idol.
She swipes away each video with barely concealed impatience. She just wants to see recipe inspiration, dammitâbut her algorithm is totally screwed, now thinking that sheâs some sort of K-pop fan. Sheâs been discretely analyzing Kismet videos trying to get a read on her sister, and now, all sheâs getting is content about junior groups. Serene, she thinks, was lucky: they debuted back when the grind didnât have so many other things to consider. Work hardâvery hard, in Sereneâs caseâimprove always, and keep the fans happy. That, and no small bit of luckâthat was all you really needed back then.
Now, everything is in such excess. Thereâs so much a rookie needs to consider by way of image, so many complicated concepts out there. There are groups debuting so fast the numbers make Miori downright dizzy. Sheâs a girl of languid, decadent tasteâsheâd rather spend thousands on one quality purse than hundreds on mid-tier multiples. So long as everything in her world is done with careful intention, sheâs happy. She canât pretend to be some artful connoisseur of music itselfârealistically, sheâs just a girl who got lucky her stepfather shared his love of music with her so thoroughly.
A snippet of Kismetâs âStyleâ music video comes on. Itâs cute, she has to admit. Her eyes track Maraâironically the member of Kismet sheâs closest to, and not her own sister. Miori anticipates KH will drop her right back into the fray as soon as theyâre back home, and have her film a dance challenge with Mara. Nothing against Mara, but the thought of doing something so shallow exhausts her; she canât even begin to imagine what itâs like being in the actual group. She can barely tolerate it even in her own group, where the company lets it slide just a little bit more for them not to be doing so many little snippets. So many little displays of excess thatâll just be forgotten within days.
âLike fast fashion,â she murmurs to herself, shaking her head in pity.
So itâs welcome when her friend approaches her with a distraction.
âIâd love to.â Miori stands and stretches. Duty-free may well give her the same volume exhaustion that consuming new groups did. But, at least, itâs better than trying to keep up with whatever sheâs expected to keep up with nowadays.
As they walk, Miori asks casually, âWhat did you think of Kismetâs new music video?â

As a proud three year and five month idol, Mio (and by extension, Kismet) was only half a year away from being senior enough to being granted permission to live outside of the company-provided and monitored dorms. Although Mio thoroughly enjoyed living with the other members, she did miss having more privacy and the ability to shower after a long day of practice without bartering the showering order with four other girls. Even though they were months away from such a milestone, it didn't stop Mio from taking note of what she did and didn't love from the company dorms. From the number of rooms to the layout of the kitchen to the orientation of the windows, Mio found herself even thinking about what the hallways looked like as she made her way out of the dorm.
It was a rare free day for Kismet, which meant Mio was going to fill her day with a checklist of bakeries she wanted to try and stationary stories she wanted to visit. Her phone was loaded with saved TikToks and Instagram reels of tourists and locals trying strawberry and cream filled salt bread and perusing through Sanrio stickersheets.
A loud thud drew her attention away from her daydreams of having a pastel colored accent wall and a Cinnamoroll stickered phone case. She glanced over to see a woman with a baseball cap, face mask, and oversize sunglasses nearly face to face with the wall. Even with her disguise in place, Mio would recognize Miori anywhere; after all, she used to have a Serene poster hanging above her desk as motivation to finish studying. Mio's face lit up immediately, her eyes crinkling into crescents as she smiled. While she knew in her heart that the past three years hadn't been as smooth sailing into sisterhood as she had dreamed, she was still excited to see Miori.
She skipped over to where Miori stood, bouncing on her feet as she came to a stop in front of her older sister.
"Miori!" She clapped her hands together with a smile at the mention of her text message she had sent, in addition to learning Miori had chosen (all on her own!) to seek her out. "It's so nice to see you, I was just about to go out to get some pastries. Do you want to come with? We can talk about Everland while we eat."
Mioâs practically bouncing on the balls of her feet. She's so sweet. And then Miori's angerâmisdirected anger, she knowsâprickles into her chest like it's a living thing that grows and curls. She musters up every ounce of control she can find.
Mioriâs heart clenches as she pulls down her face mask and rests her sunglasses on the bill of her hat. She gives a smile to the younger girl. Mioriâs never been good at hiding her emotionsâwhat you see is usually what sheâs thinking. So she hopes that, as her fatherâs eyes crinkle into crescents in Mioâs happy face, Mio isnât seeing a grimace on Mioriâs lips.
No, she doesnât want to get pastries. No, she doesnât really want to talk about Everland. She was, honestly, hoping to get this done quick so that she could go relax after this. Some days itâs easy to talk to Mio; some days itâs not. Most days, it has to be an interaction she plans into her calendar, with a good block of self-care time after. Today is one of those days; Miori has a date with her new bespoke dress, a single-person reservation at La Yeon, and miles upon miles of an engine purring down Han River roads.
She checks her watch. Her reservation isnât for another two hours.
âIâd love to get pastries,â she says, and turns around and starts walking without waiting to see if Mio's begun to follow.

thread .01âstarter for @lovelettersbymio, kh entertainment dorm buildings
Miori hasnât been down these halls in years. Seniors just don't really need to, nowadaysâever since Miori settled on which penthouse she wanted, she hasn't bothered coming to the dorms. So it feels awkward in her baseball cap, sunglasses, and face mask. It's just other idols, but she knows she's a well-established senior, and she doesn't like the attention the same way she once did.
She glances at her phone, frowning under the mask. Glowing back up at her is her half-sister'sâshe mentally grimaces at the wordâtext inviting her to the amusement park for Miori's 32nd birthday coming up.
Sweet, oblivious Mio. How would she know that Miori's tastes aren't exactly amusement parks? But...Miori has an obligation. Some kind. She doesn't quite know what, but she knows that she does feel awful every time Mio looks up at her with those big, hopeful eyes, unaware that just the sight of her makes Miori nauseous. She's a relic of the past, after allâa relic Miori's spent her whole life forgetting.
Now, wherever Kismet is running around, Miori's not sure. But she doesn't have to be unsure for too longâshe rounds the corner, and there she is. Mio. Walking toward Miori far before she's ready to see her.
Realistically speaking, Miori would never have been ready to see her. She never is. She's spent the whole morning steeling herself to let her little sister down gently. But in a horrifically embarrassing, graceless display, Miori spins on her heel and slams right into the wall.
Well, no hope of escaping before Mio could see her. No avoiding it now. She turns casually as if none of that just happened.
"Oh, hey, Mio. You're just who I was looking for. I got your text. The one about my birthday?"
