Miori canโt help but chuckle as she runs a finger along the stark-white walls of the airport.
โNo. Donโt tell anyone I said this, but I think if anyone deserves a break from idoldom, itโs us. I just haveโโ Her fingernail catches on a flaw in the grout, and she snatches her hand away with a quiet, annoyed hiss. โโreasons. That I made sure to watch it.โ
She feels a little awkward, so she observes the new chip in her nail instead of Natsumi. Itโs ridiculous to feel awkwardโmany of the Serene members are well aware of whatโs been agitating their leader lately. Itโs especially ridiculous to feel awkward in front of this specific Serene member.
โIt was great,โ Miori says. โKismetโs great.โ She thinks for a second, feeling like she should say something else, but there it is again, that discomfort whenever she thinks about the group as a whole, even if itโs only one member that leaves a foul taste in her mouthโeven if itโs realistically nobodyโs fault. Sheโs beat herself up about this enough, told herself to just grow up and get over it, tried forcing herself to be nice, tried taking Mio on sister outings, but nothingโs seemed to work. She barely even likes thinking about Mio, much less talking about her. So itโs something of another way for her to push herself when she asks Natsumi, cautiously, far too casually:
โWhat do you think of Mio, by the way?โ
Mioriโs talked circles around the topic more times than she can count, and yes, mostly with Natsumi. Nothing, though, seems to budge the wall thatโs forged itself between the Mochizuki sisters. That familiar, nauseous feeling that builds in Miori whenever Mioโs a topic of conversation is starting to well up. So, as usual, she chickens out. And, as usual, that comes in the form of her switching immediately to logic mode.
โHer dancingโs good,โ she babbles before Natsumi can answer her question. โI think her singing is okay, but sheโs young and still has training to do. Sheโs pretty good with variety, and I think she fits the concepts. But Kismet is doing great. Theyโre going to make a real big splash in the industry. I'll probably be a Cosmo sometime soon.โ
Sheโs been talking too much. She snaps her mouth shut and ducks her head, face burning hot with shame. Even in the empty halls, with no one to witness her but her best friend, Miori canโt help but feel like a child. Not like the leader who carried Serene through over a decade of idoldom, but that same stupid, useless child who boarded the first plane out of Japan with her mother when she was young.
no, miori, natsumi thinks but doesn't say, i'll run straight to dispatch and tell them you're sick of the work. it would've come out in a rush of sarcasm, much less amiable than miori's tone. natsumi's never been great at this, resentment festering into some sour clump that sits heavy in her gut, seeping toxins into her conversations. they're all just tired, she's been thinking for months. they all just need a break, and there's no reason to feel so frustrated with her peers when even the managers seem to be run ragged by this point. besides: miori doesn't deserve the vitriol that should be aimed elsewhere.
but then miori keeps talking, the same topic they've circled around over and over again like a pair of hungry sharks. in the near distance, the sparkle of the off-duty shops catches the eye. it's fitting, then, that they're here in the relative dark. natsumi reaches for miori's arm, hooks her own around it, brings her to a stop before they get close enough for the sparse crowd to swallow them.
"she's very cute," she says, a little diplomatically. "a good dancer, yes. her stage presence has been getting better and better." kismet aren't even really rookies anymore, out of their second year now and into their third. it shows in their growth, which seems to have accelerated at a quicker pace than serene's ever did. or maybe natsumi is just biased towards her own failures, keenly aware of where she could've improved quicker.
there's nothing to say that hasn't been said before, so natsumi lets silence fall over them just for a moment. ahead of them is the low murmur of people paying for overpriced souvenirs, behind them the steps of a woman's heels echo through the halls. between them, in the relative quiet, a thousand things go unsaid.
there's something natsumi thinks about the whole mess of this situation, something she's never said to miori and never will, and it's that she doubts kismet's mio will ever be a true sister to her friend. it's a bleak opinion to hold and thus shall never be voiced. even if miori and mio, the version of mio who doesn't dance of the stage and lights up a room with her smile, eventually get close enough - the way miori had learnt of her existence will always cast a shadow on the group. for natsumi, pretending at something for the fans will make it less true in reality, a gap widening quicker than you can try to bridge it. perhaps uncharitably, she applies this line of thinking to her groupmate's sisterhood, too.
"should we monitor their stages?," she offers instead of trying to therapize miori. "we could make an afternoon of it, give her pointers. i think she'd appreciate that."
at the hinting of serene's comeback, junseo could really only nod and smile knowing their comeback teaser that has been put up in the weeks before had already been a buzz and the talk of the town. that aside, perhaps being a music show mc has also earned him some 'insider' information on the comeback lineups that's bound to happen. it's still amazing however that the senior idol had managed to squeeze in a leisure time to join in on the session despite how busy it could be during comeback season since he is someone of the same industry as well.
once the deck is scattered out equally, he arranges them in his preferred format based on values depending on the game; though other times he would color code them if the values are nonexistent to the board.
if anything, junseo appreciates the small talks the older idol is initiating, in all consideration of the lacking of mutual interest aside from their shared interest in their game session, he isn't sure particularly if there were anything else they could really connect ( but that doesn't mean he isn't willing to learn. ) "it's fun," he gives a brief answer at first, eyes tracking into the cards and movement being played by others. "but it does get a little lonely since i'm usually with a few other members most of my life." which wasn't a lie โ there might be cracks that goes unseen in his dynamics with the members, some he was close with, others he seem a tad bit more distant but he overalls care for them. it's just harder to show it, not because he is emotionally unavailable, but rather, everyone seemed so secretive in what they do and sometimes it feels like he's stuck on a roadblock.
he snaps out of thoughts and plays a card. thankfully they decided to start off a simpler game that didn't need too much thinking or strategy for the matter. "you should try someday. i feel like you could have a knack for it," he commends. natsumi had more than charisma to carry the way she looks and talk, and he's sure that she would be a fun host when and if given a base script. if junseo could be a host, he thinks, then anyone else could do it better than him.
"feeling a little lonely might do me good," natsumi jokes, a complete lie. it's true that miori and her had been fighting for much of the time they'd spent living in the dorms, snide remarks that would never land softly and sometimes something a little more explosive, but now that natsumi's got her own place she never minds the long workdays around her groupmates. even when they're all stressed, knee-deep in comeback prep or in the middle of a tour that feels like it won't ever end, natsumi enjoys being around them. moving out of the dorms had taken some getting used to; now, during the rare break they get, she misses her girls terribly.
the game starts slow. natsumi throws one of her cards onto the pile in the middle when her turn comes around, moves her little figurine one step towards the objective on the board. kind of like what she's doing, trying to make conversation with junseo - one step at a time, closer to the goal.
"wouldn't really fit the image," she tells him once her turn is done. "the hosting, i mean. i'm too quiet for it." natsumi isn't, which is probably what junseo means, but in the public eye she's still playing at being reserved around strangers. "and i'd never be able to fit it into our schedule, but i think it's a nice idea. you're meeting a lot of new people, right? collecting signed cds?"
she isn't rookie enough for it anymore, that sort of work on a music show, but beyond it being a job - a regular job that you have to show up for every week - it does look pretty fun, as long as you're extroverted enough for it.
Dance challenges, TikTok trends, the battlefield that is vying to be the hot audio of the weekโMioriโs head spins when she thinks about how hard it must be to fight it out for fame as a young idol.
She swipes away each video with barely concealed impatience. She just wants to see recipe inspiration, dammitโbut her algorithm is totally screwed, now thinking that sheโs some sort of K-pop fan. Sheโs been discretely analyzing Kismet videos trying to get a read on her sister, and now, all sheโs getting is content about junior groups. Serene, she thinks, was lucky: they debuted back when the grind didnโt have so many other things to consider. Work hardโvery hard, in Sereneโs caseโimprove always, and keep the fans happy. That, and no small bit of luckโthat was all you really needed back then.
Now, everything is in such excess. Thereโs so much a rookie needs to consider by way of image, so many complicated concepts out there. There are groups debuting so fast the numbers make Miori downright dizzy. Sheโs a girl of languid, decadent tasteโsheโd rather spend thousands on one quality purse than hundreds on mid-tier multiples. So long as everything in her world is done with careful intention, sheโs happy. She canโt pretend to be some artful connoisseur of music itselfโrealistically, sheโs just a girl who got lucky her stepfather shared his love of music with her so thoroughly.
A snippet of Kismetโs โStyleโ music video comes on. Itโs cute, she has to admit. Her eyes track Maraโironically the member of Kismet sheโs closest to, and not her own sister. Miori anticipates KH will drop her right back into the fray as soon as theyโre back home, and have her film a dance challenge with Mara. Nothing against Mara, but the thought of doing something so shallow exhausts her; she canโt even begin to imagine what itโs like being in the actual group. She can barely tolerate it even in her own group, where the company lets it slide just a little bit more for them not to be doing so many little snippets. So many little displays of excess thatโll just be forgotten within days.
โLike fast fashion,โ she murmurs to herself, shaking her head in pity.
So itโs welcome when her friend approaches her with a distraction.
โIโd love to.โ Miori stands and stretches. Duty-free may well give her the same volume exhaustion that consuming new groups did. But, at least, itโs better than trying to keep up with whatever sheโs expected to keep up with nowadays.
As they walk, Miori asks casually, โWhat did you think of Kismetโs new music video?โ
it's so late in the evening that even the airport feels deserted, which is to say: it isn't busy enough for them to need to weave through lingering crowds on their way down fluorescent-lit walkways. the lounge they'd been camping out at is close to their terminal, which means it's a bit of a walk to get to anything even moderately interesting. natsumi amuses herself by looking outside to her left and towards fellow travellers waiting for boarding, the brightly lit runways past huge windows.
"does it make me a bad senior if i admit i haven't really seen it yet?" it's not for lack of trying, but the upload of kismet's new music video had coincided with work and travel. natsumi had found herself first unable to catch enough of a break to watch it uninterrupted and then too unconcentrated, her gaze sliding off her tiny phone screen until she realised she'd been staring at nothing at all for a handful of seconds at a time. she'd eventually given up the venture entirely, vowing to get on it back home in her bed, after a long rest. nobody would ask about it until they were back home anyway.
but earlier, in the car, she'd at least listened to the single. "it's a cute song though. feels a bit like something we might've done, back when." not that natsumi holds much nostalgia for serene's earlier, cuter releases. kismet's take on it is a little more interesting. there's a bit more edge to it. "feels like it'd suit them. how'd you like it?"
natsumi is genuinely interested in this, because miori's relationship to kismet as a whole is just that little strained, enough so for her thoughts on the group to be worth discussion. and shop talk is preferable over the idle small talk they'd make otherwise, about mediocre airport food and what to watch on the plane.

"should we look at the memory wall first?," she asks, and means - of course - to pick out a picture to ask yeona about, the sort of thing that'll keep their viewership engaged but might actually be fun to talk about with a friend. it's lucky she's here with yeona and not someone she knows less well, or on her own. there's only so much you can say about the glimpses your colleagues offer into their private lives, or the clipped interviews shown on the screens throughout the exhibition.

it'sย aย littleย ironic,ย consideringย wheneverย she'sย beenย inย frontย ofย theย camera,ย she'sย alwaysย beenย aย littleย moreย onย theย stiffย side,ย butย yeonaย actuallyย findsย theย timeย visitingย theย exhibitionย todayย toย beย theย mostย funย she'sย hadย inย aย while,ย evenย whenย it'sย meantย toย beย workย andย somethingย solelyย tapedย toย attractย theirย fans.
"thatย soundsย likeย aย greatย idea,"ย comesย herย easyย reply,ย genuine,ย soft,ย theย edgesย ofย herย mouthย curvingย upwardsย asย sheย looksย overย atย theย otherย female.ย toย theย nakedย eye,ย itย mightย lookย likeย theย twoย ofย themย wouldย beย anย oddย pairingย โย onย theย surface,ย natsumiย andย yeonaย mayย notย haveย beenย theย mostย likelyย ofย friends,ย butย it'sย clearย toย seeย theirย closeย fromย howย herย shouldersย relaxย andย sheย nodsย alongย inย tandemย withย theย other.
truthfully,ย she'sย veryย thankfulย thatย natsumiย hadย beenย theย oneย chosenย forย whatย khย entertainmentย hadย beenย dubbingย aย y2k-esqueย walkthroughย ofย theย exhibition.ย it'sย meantย toย haveย aย nostalgicย feel,ย andย they'veย goneย asย farย asย havingย theย staffย useย aย numberย ofย oldย camcorders,ย focusedย onย capturingย theย warbly,ย driftingย effectย thatย comesย withย watchingย somethingย fromย theย lateย 90sย andย earlyย 2000s.ย makeย sureย youย actย likeย oldย friends,ย theย seniorย staffย hadย insisted,ย butย luckily,ย yeonaย thoughtย thatย wouldย beย easyย considerย herย andย theย otherย wereย oldย friends.
"look,ย sumi-ah,"ย yeonaย saysย asย theย twoย ofย themย approachย theย memoryย wall,ย herย eyesย lightingย upย andย herย smileย widening,ย slenderย indexย fingerย pointingย towardsย aย photographย pinnedย upย onย theย wallย inย frontย ofย them.ย it'sย fromย aย fewย yearsย ago,ย aย littleย weatheredย atย theย edges,ย mostย likelyย onย purpose,ย butย stillย bringsย backย theย recollectionย likeย itย wereย yesterday.ย there,ย standingย inย theย middleย ofย aย stage,ย standsย natsumi,ย eyesย brightย andย smileย beaming.ย theย staffย zoomย inย onย theย photoย beforeย takingย aย stepย back,ย focusingย onย theย twoย girlsย andย theirย exchange.ย "isn'tย thisย yourย debutย stage?ย youย lookย soย cute!"
"oh, wow," natsumi says, like there's something fascinating to looking at her own babyface. this picture, the one of their debut stage, is not one she would've expected to see here - certainly not one she'd submitted - but somehow it had made its way into the collection anyway. it's odd to look at it now, more than a decade removed from the girl grinning back at her. she was so young, then, so naive. natsumi isn't a jaded person, or really the sort to look at the teenagers haunting the hallways at kh entertainment's headquarters and judge them for their youth, but it's impossible to look at this person she used to be and not see it in her. nevermind that natsumi from twelve years ago had set her on the path she's still on, forced her into playing a role she's been wanting to put down for ages. it's difficult, now, to recognise herself in the lines of a face that seems too innocent for all that natsumi knows she hadn't been.
she doesn't say any of that. it's too private, not the sort of thing that's expected of her or that the fans would want to hear anyway; it'd get edited out and the manager behind the camera would try to get them to redo the scene, or usher them on to the next sparkly thing to look at. "i remember being so nervous that day," is what comes out anyway, the sort of thing that takes no thinking for her to spew up. wasn't everyone nervous, on that first stage in front of a proper crowd, for the first time as part of the group meant to make it? if natsumi's giving away any sort of truth, it's one she shares with everyone she knows.
"maybe not as much as on eighteen," she adds on, acquiescing. everything on the survival show had been nerve-wracking, but especially the eliminations, which had seemed to take ages every single time - despite natsumi solidly ranking in the final lineup through most of the episodes. "but when i put on that dress backstage i thought wow, okay, this is really it. not even when we'd gone on stage yet!"
she looks at the picture for just a moment longer. the makeup that'd now be considered outdated, a hairstyle that had changed her from a trainee to an idol. natsumi isn't the sort of person who'll reminisce easily. "what about you, yeona?," she asks, then clarifies: "how did you feel on your debut stage?"
there's a pace that easily falls into their line of conversation โ it is comfortable, inviting but a wall still holds up high in between them. junseo barely knows much about natsumi if he has to admit it. aside from loose information like her age, where she is from and of course, her occupation; one that he shares working in the same field as, he's as clueless about anything else. there are other information he may indirectly know of, mostly for the fact that they can be scour through the internet just as any curious person would by searching up lynkcon profile and whatever past trivias were up on the internet. if there was anything he could really point out in uniqueness of his knowledge of the older woman, it might really just be her playstyle in games, the character and color she picks and that she always prefers to set the game up for their group of friend.
he takes half the deck and silently hands out the split share needed to run the game like the few other times he's deal with. the younger idol is thankful mostly that the responsibility of setting up and shuffling is not within his hands. he has not quite learn how to properly shuffle a deck without the cards popping out of it.
"it's quite.. a last minute decision." he response to the remark of his attendance and settles down back on his seat once he has all the cards dealt out. "well it's picking up here and there, the usuals for us. i've also been recently appointed as music bank host recently back in march. perhaps we might even cross path there when serene has a comeback coming up?"
"you won't have to wait all that long," natsumi tells him, but junseo probably already knows that serene is bound to turn up within the second week of june. preparations have kept them busy enough that she hadn't been sure she'd be able to make it to their little gathering, either, but stubbornness had prevailed: if she can't take an evening to re-center herself, then promotions are bound to go bad quickly. and so board game night had been squeezed in-between practice and sleep, as though her schedule could allow it through sheer force of will. six years out of the trainee dorms and onto the stage and natsumi should be used to the speed of which everything in her life needs to move now, but adaptation is still out of her reach.
they get interrupted for a moment when the newcomer settles in and the group lobs good-natured greetings at them. the table rearranges like a shifting tide, drinks shuffled to the side to make space. natsumi picks up her cards and orders them by value, and it's only another minute later that her attention returns to junseo.
"how are you liking it?," she tries. they're making the sort of small talk that gets frustrating quickly, because she can't find the point to hook into and lead them off-track, away from conversation about the weather and traffic and the egg sandwich everyone eats at inkigayo. "i've never done any hosting." natsumi really hasn't done much of anything, aside from the work with serene and the shooting for adidas a few months prior. "is it exciting, doing schedules on your own?"
off duty, with @luxuriantly - early july, at night, in an airport
they've been through this a number of times, so often that the repetition's morphed from mind-numbing to soothing back to infuriating. or maybe natsumi's just that edge of tired, worn out like the decade-old t-shirt she sleeps in when she's staying with her parents, that last remnant of girlhood she can hold onto with clenched fists.
she shifts again, the fourth time within the minute, but the chairs aren't going to get more comfortable no matter what. the carefully curated airport fit is inconvenient in that the knot tying her blouse keeps digging into her spine when she leans back. she's wired, but a glance around tells her that this isn't an affliction shared by many: half her groupmates are drowsing, two of the managers are bent over a laptop discussing things natsumi wants nothing to do with. she lets her gaze travel around the lounge, a little furtively. moments later she spots the ray of light shining through the dark clouds of her night: miori's scrolling on her phone.
far be it for her to assume that the duty free will be in the least interesting, but a distraction is needed, and so natumi gathers her purse and checks that her phone's in her pocket before she approaches. there's space on the leather couch on miori's left, enough that she could sprawl out and try to close her eyes, passing time until boarding in that haze between awake and the sort of half-asleep that you need to force. natsumi doesn't sit.
"hey," she says instead, voice low enough not to disturb anyone in the vicinity. "miori. you wanna go shopping?"
wet ink, with @nariisms - lynk experience in-person visit
the ice in natsumi's cup has long melted by the time the staff member has gone to use the bathroom and changed the camera settings to whatever default had been messed with by whoever had been on duty most recently. natsumi takes a sip through her straw, gets a mouthful of diluted coffee, and carefully ducks off-screen before making a face. the cup ends up set on the counter next to the bag she won't carry with her through the exhibition.
"you know the drill," the staff member starts, but then explains the drill anyway, in detail. natsumi leans forward to catch yeona's eye, smiling the easy smile of a person who'd once received training in the very discipline.
the camera starts rolling; natsumi cheerily waves at the lens. they give a greeting, go over their introductory lines, and then they're finally set loose to explore, trailed by a small army of interns and social media managers. natsumi lets her gaze travel and pretends the setup is more impressive than it actually is, oohs and aahs where appropriate. all things considered, it's actually pretty nice; she can acknowledge that plenty of work must've gone into it. it's just that natsumi, unlike her stage persona, isn't that excitable a personality.
โ โ โ development cardsโ โ โฑโ โ ย with @inmidsummer
it is rather unusual but in the smallest circle of connection that junseo has, there is one particular group of friends that he keeps up with one every month or two depending on the group's unfortunate packed schedules. it can't be helped considering the few of them so happened to be idols in the industry and have various schedules that makes aligning plans far more challenging than it should be but when they could finally secure one free day in the calendar, things tend to fall into place easily.
with refreshments in his arms, an offering to the group of friends for the game session to come, junseo greets the game host of the month before settling into his seat and falling into a comfortable conversation of catching up with them. it's not much from his side but he tends to at least ask how their wellbeing is, a question rooted constantly in the back of his head from years of picking up the leadership role โ or rather, being handed the role that the idol gets used to checking in with people.
his attention then falls into a familiar female idol, a shy of a few years older than he is and someone who has been in the industry slightly longer than he did but even so, their friendship somehow align from being in this very same circle of friends and that's junseo had initially got to know her.
"hi noona," he starts attempting to break the ice and while they are still waiting on a few missing friends who have yet to announce their arrival for the evening. "have you been well?"
there's a spot natsumi gravitates towards every time they meet at eunmi's. the chair isn't the most comfortable of the mismatched set, the fabric seat cover fraying a little after years of use. every time she needs to use the bathroom, natsumi has to ask at least three people to make space, either getting up to let her through or shifting so close towards the table that the edge digs into their ribs. but it's there that natsumi has the best view of the room, and the empty seat to her left means that she's always the one to set up the game, a job which she enjoys immensely only insofar as that she hates watching her friends dithering over it even more.
the board is unfolded, pushed into the middle of the table. natsumi hands out figurines to each player, noting colour preferences and cutting through the usual bickering with untroubled ease. everyone gets their assigned chips. it's while she's shuffling cards that the doorbell rings once again and the conversation between her and eunmi stalls out. silence rings in her periphery for only a few moments, though; across the table, natsumi catches junseo's gaze and inclines her head in greeting.
"junseo, hi! didn't notice you coming in." she cuts the deck, gives half the stack over to junseo in a silent bid for him to start handing them out to his side of the table. "i'm keeping busy, but that's how i like it."
there's more she could say, but they're not really that close - friends more so in proximity than personality, without the intimate knowledge needed to follow up on previous conversational threads. natsumi leans back in her chair. "and you? i've heard work is gearing up again."

to get ahead of the confusion that might follow... natsumi was born a 4th generation ethnic korean in japan / zainichi korean. as such, she has multiple names: kim natsumi (้ ๅค็พ, her legal name), kaneda natsumi (้็ฐ ๅค็พ, the japanese alias she used for almost everything in japan, including her schooling), and kim hami (้ ๅค็พ / ๊น ํ๋ฏธ, her korean name). her parents went the route of picking a common japanese name with a spelling that doubles as a more uncommon korean name (ๅค็พ - natsumi / hami). she prefers being called natsumi, because that's the name she grew up being called, but she's using kim over kaneda. juliet, of course, is her stage name, chosen for her to separate her idol identity from the 'real natsumi' (given that she exists - more on that later). if you have any questions about her background, please ask! i'd be happy to elaborate : )
background
natsumi grows up very loved as the middle child of a lower middle class family. her mother helps run the family restaurant, her dad works as a janitor. natsumi spends most of her free time at the beach.
she's an active child, and to keep her from running around too much at home, natsumi is put into a variety of activities. she plays volleyball, she learns how to surf, her dad tries really hard to get her into tennis. two hobbies stick: dancing, which she will keep doing, and judo, which she'll drop when she moves to seoul. after school and in-between her active hobbies, natsumi helps out in the family restaurant, charming tourists with an overly curious nature and knowledge of the best spots to swim in the area.
one of those tourists ends up scouting her in early 2012, after natsumi's just celebrated her 15th birthday. it's her lust for adventure that has her deciding to go for it, even though natsumi doesn't want to be an idol as much as she wants to look at pretty girls in pretty outfits. her parents are hesitant to let her go, but are finally convinced after many discussions. trainee life is difficult on her; she has a tough time assimilating with the culture. back home, her parents spoke no korean, and her grandma only did so rarely (and somewhat brokenly). natsumi struggles picking it up. she misses okinawa fiercly, and the trainers don't tolerate her moodiness. natsumi learns quickly to keep her head down and play along.
somehow, luckily for natsumi, her troubles translate well onto the screen. on eighteen, audiences see her struggling through halting korean and keeping more to the background, and many may have misinterpreted her initial awkwardness in front of the cameras as shyness. a personality that's perceived as soft-spoken and humble with a hard-working mindset and polished dance skills net her the #2 rank in the end - and leads natsumi to debut.
and thus, on debut, juliet is born, more of an alter ego than anything else. behind the scenes, natsumi acts very differently than sweet juliet does, who is about as bland as pastel-coloured cardboard. natsumi isn't upset about it; she's just really good at compartmentalising - as she's always been. after all, she's long used of walking the lines of what it means to be kaneda natsumi and kim hami - what's one more personality added to the pile?
for a while, because they're riding the high of success, serene feels like the place she belongs - like she's finally found what she's been looking for all her life. growing up, natsumi was caught between her identities - her korean ancestry and japanese surroundings, hami and natsumi - and felt like she would never be able to fully relate to either. it's not until she's in too deep that she realises she's doing the same thing again, splitting herself between juliet and natsumi. so when years after debut serene is faced with their biggest controversy and natsumi is labelled a weak performer and poor vocalist, she pretends that the nasty comments left on her socials aren't about her. juliet is just the girl whose shoes natsumi slips into sometimes to entertain; she's not a real human being.
the distinction works until it stops working, but for now natsumi is a social chameleon, keeping her identities in seperate boxes and trying them on like costumes. we'll see how well that goes for her : )
work
juliet, with her non-offensive image and pretty looks, makes for a good model to sell things to consumers. she's got some cf work under her belt and has been brand ambassador for more than one company. there's a viral juliet fancam floating around, but beyond that... crickets, pretty much. in-between serene promotions, natsumi has been focussed on her higher education; she's got a master's and is (very, very slowly) working towards a phd. that last part is nothing more than a rumour to the public, though.
within serene, she was initially known for being quiet: her grasp on korean wasn't perfect enough on debut for her personality to shine through. juliet is therefore mild-mannered and sweet, and natsumi has made no efforts to rid herself of the image. the rare moments of her breaking character in public are often played for laughs. since natsumi is a bit clumsy naturally, she leans into it - offbeat moments can often be unintentionally comical. there have been a few times she's been openly criticised (feminist book scandal ร la irene, at some point someone's snapped a picture of her smoking, a criticism of her attitude due to a misinterpretation), but nothing has really stuck.
but after more than a decade of performing this way, natsumi's carefully labelled boxes are beginning to tear at the edges, and she's been wishing that her image was just a little more mature and outspoken than the corner she's backed herself into.
personality
natsumi is the kind of girl that was meant to lug tote bags around and knit across from you on the subway. she's the type to hit on a guy at a bar before he can make the first move, and to buy him a beer while she's at it. if she weren't famous, she'd probably be organising political protests. she would've buzzed off her hair at least once, maybe she would've backpacked for a bit. you all know the type - think of the girl in an oversized leather jacket & with a bunch of mismatched jewelry asking for a light in front of the club. someone who's good at chatting people up but the kind of person that'd surprise you if they kept in touch.
it's not that she's not feminine at all - she loves a nice, sleek dress - but serene's image is so hyperfeminine that she enjoys a reprieve in her daily life, and switches out her sneakers for heels only very rarely. it shows in her body language, too: once the cameras are off she takes up space, with an arm around the back of a friend's chair or a lazy sprawl on the couch. when she was a kid, nobody would've expected her to go into entertainment at all; natsumi's very logical, and really not very imaginative. most of her teachers thought she'd end up becoming a doctor (she did show interest at the big age of 10). but natsumi loves to travel and explore - she's big on her outdoor activities - and she sees her time at khe as just another step in her life.
natsumi's calm, cool & collected, someone who seems to take things as they come and stay unbothered in the face of adversity. she's unwilling to coddle the people around her and expects her own work ethic of others, but she's good at speaking up as the voice of reason and at mediating conflicts. on the other hand though... she's unlikely to ask for help for anything, and she bottles up negative feelings so frequently that something's bound to give sometime soon. everyone code switches around different people, but she takes it to an extreme; if you asked her (and she were willing to give you a straight answer), she'd be unable to tell you where the real natsumi lays buried under all her layers of bullshit. maybe this is a natural consequence of her going by kaneda in school (plenty of schoolmates were very surprised when she debuted), maybe it's a coping mechanism, maybe it's just who she was always going to be.
plots!
these are just starting points for us to build on, and i'm open to any and all other ideas!
first things first... people who were trainees at the same time she was, i'm looking at you <3
i want a u-haul type lesbian relationship in her past, maybe even with some codependency in there. as relaxed as natsumi comes across... once she starts losing her cool, she's quick to overinvest. i'd like this to have happened when she was younger (more than five years ago), and for both of them to have come out changed.
current dalliances and other exes are very welcome too! she's bi and more bossy with men than with women. also - someone she went on a date or two with but just didn't click with?
foreign idol club, anyone? people to commisserate with over homesickness, being so far away from family, et cetera
someone who voted for her back on eighteen!
dogsitters... or perhaps mugi (her tiny, NOT CRUSTY white dog) has her own group of friends, so someone to organise dog playdates with
anyone into fiber arts can expect her to forward cute instructions she finds on instagram. anyone who isn't but is a good friend can ask her (very nicely) and she might knit them a scarf
hit her up for okinawa travel tips & she'll write you a list! it'd be cute if someone's travelled with her and slept over at her parent's
ik there's no fellow serene girls around currently but putting it here for when they show up... former roomies? this also works for trainees back when
further points to connect to her, which you might've seen on her profile: house parties (and drinking in general), hiking (either chatting about trails or going together), fellow people who really enjoy brunch!!!!, a study buddy (and people who'll listen to her explain her thesis), a group to play board games with, reading, she's good at mending clothes (maybe your muse ripped their favourite sweater?). someone who'll spot for her at the gym, that one person with whom she got really into geocaching in like 2017 (the hobby has been dropped since), in general i'd love relations that used to be closer during certain 'phases'. if your muse speaks japanese, she'd love to give her brain a rest and chatter a bit in her mother tongue. basic things like shared work experience, (mutual) fans, etc are all on the table too, of course... and there's definitely plenty of things i haven't thought of, so if you've got ideas, share them!
