(Gunths) "I heard he ran out of research to do! And so the mad Doctor researched his own crew!"

(Knowhere) "Ooooh someone's mad! That was a great shot by the way!

Chill out, friend. You dodged a bullet anyhow! You didn't hear what I heard, that's for sure!"

(Doctor Morose's voice) "You of all people should understand that, unlike that idiot with the brown hat!"

(Knowhere) "... well, maybe I'll leave the rest of it out, on second thought.

(Local ex-tycoon got his boat stolen by a rhyming man in brown.) //Just like Howard's letters, I structured this to be more diary-like. I hope that's fine.

Dear Diary,

Today was a lovely day. The people have stopped throwing trash at me when I walk by. Some of them even listened to my stories about the old days. But that's not really what's important.

The strange boy came by the dock again today. He comes here so often, I sometimes wonder if he has a house boat or something. He seems to enjoy the salty air, and the fish smell doesn't seem to bother him like it does some folks. I wonder what it is he's looking for. Sometimes I wonder what I'm looking for.

You know, Diary, life really is all about perspective. When Kathy left me and the business fell apart, I really thought things couldn't get any worse. But now, I see that things are better this way. Nobody keeps me from my bottles. Nobody tries to take my spices from me. And my connections ensure I've always got a steady supply It really was a wonderful day.

Wait...is that my boat? Gotta go, Diary. I'll write more later!

(Samantha) "Okay, okay, how about this one?"

(Doctor Morose) "I don't know... You know I'd prefer candidates with more...

... Experience."

(Samantha) "That's exactly why I think these two make great choices!

You've turned this one down a few times, why not give them a shot?"

(Doctor Morose) "Because it isn't the death itself that matters to me! You know this!"

(Pause)

(Doctor Morose) "I'm sorry, that's not what I meant.

This one is...fine. Good grades. Spectacular research.

The thing is... Well... There's an issue with him."

(Samantha) "The speech thing? Sure, that's odd, but you could work with that, I'm sure..."

(Doctor Morose) "Working WITH people is a waste of time.

And time is a resource we are both quickly running out of."

(Samantha) "How about this one, then?"

(Doctor Morose) "Hmmmm, how old was he when it happened?"

(Samantha) "Between the ages of comprehension and acceptance, same as the others."

(Doctor Morose) "Very good.

Alright, young rabbit. Why don't we free you from your cage and see what you can do?

Send the telegram at once!"

(Samantha) "Right away!"

(Doctor Morose) "I look forward to meeting you...

...Phillip."

(Doctor Morose) "I am the one who called Phillip here... but I didn't call you, so please... Dissappear."

That December, for the first time anyone could remember, there was no new breakthrough on Greatmaw Island.

(A couple of Howard's letters to Phillip.) //i structure it to make it more letter-like. i hope that's fine.

Dear Phillip,

How are you? How have things been? It’s now been some time, you know, since then. I still think about all those things that you’d say. And I think of our fight almost everyday. I think that perhaps the reason you’ve been, so terribly silent towards me since then, is that you think that I’m angry at you.

Phillip, my friend, this is simply not true!

Really, that quarrel did sour my mood. My normal demeanor; it really had blued. But Phillip, I think that it’s really quite bad, to spend a whole six and three quarters months mad. I get that there may be some things you CAN’T say, but surely you CAN send a letter my way?

Honest to goodness, Phillip, good chum. I worry sometimes that you’ll end up a bum! Maybe you shouldn’t have gone after all. The type who forgets to respond to a call.

Between you and me, it has always been true that I am responsible. Much more so than you! I’m kidding here, Phillip. Truly I jest… And as for apologies, you know the rest.

Everything’s mostly the same over here. Which means that I’ve plenty of time to lend ear, to all your adventures away on that isle, your tales of encountering a crocodile, your tales of experiments, both big and small, I’d love to know details, my friend! Please tell all!

Unless, of course, for the things you can’t say. The things that would get your mail taken away. I really do hope nothing’s happened to you. If you were gone, well then, what would I do?!

Well, just in case, make sure to respond, so I know that you’re well and not drowned in some pond. Now that I’ve thought of that… Ugh, my mood soured.

I’m serious, please just write back. Your continued silence has me out of whack. This is ridiculous, you MUST respond. Unless you really did drown in some pond.

It’s now been 11 months near to the dot, since you left me here and you went to that spot. Nearly a year is too long to stay mad. Even considering the fight that we had. Honestly, Phillip, this just is not you! If it were me out there, you know what I’d do? I’d write new letters each week! I’d write them all night! I’d do a great deal just to prove I’m alright! I wouldn’t leave you worried sick about me. I wouldn’t have chosen some odd place to be. In fact, I’d have probably come home by now. I’d say, “Goodbye, Doctor Morose,” with a bow!

What could you possibly be up to there, that would cause you to ignore me without a care? I’ve had enough of this! Truly, I’m through! And I know exactly what I’m going to do!

Next week, I’m headed down to the dock. I’ll stay near the mailboat until 12 o’clock. And if there’s STILL no mail from you to me, I shall assume the worst and I’ll come out to see. I’ll come there to get you, my time-withered friend. So if you’re reading this, know this ain’t the end!
