The White Tree of Gondor. Hand embroidery
This embroidery is done in A3 size using DMC Satin (viscose) thread on matte black fabric. To create a 3D effect, I used a base of two felt layers. The felt was carefully cut to match the curves of the branches and the trunk, and then covered with a padded satin stitch.
Honestly, working with viscose was a struggle. Viscose thread is a tricky material to work with — it is very slippery and frays easily, making it hard to lay down smooth stitches over a raised base. However, I chose this exact thread against the deep black background, because it gives a smooth, shimmering surface. I wanted the Tree to look as if it were forged from real mithril, silvered by moonlight, shining in the dark.
The seven stars above the branches of the majestic Tree are made using the woven star technique. The overlapping threads naturally build volume and geometric facets, so no felt padding was needed underneath them. The light catches the facets of the stars, and the viscose shines just like real metal.
The thick grey cardboard used for the matting is like the ancient stone of the walls of Minas Tirith, the White City, protecting the White Tree. The inner bevel is hand-painted with silver Finetec, and a thin silver cord echoes the metallic shine of the embroidery, completing the artwork.

"The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet."

THE SONG OF AMERGIN
A Poem from Ancient Irish Mythology |
This is an ancient Irish poem attributed to the legendary bard and judge Amergin Glúingel ("white knees"), who, according to myths, arrived in Ireland with the Milesians. In the song, Amergin addresses the wind, sea, earth, and other elements, asserting his connection with them and his power over them.
The poem is a kind of declaration by Amergin of his power over the land of Ireland and a challenge to its previous inhabitants, the Tuatha Dé Danann.
It is considered one of the oldest surviving works from the British Isles and holds great significance in Irish mythology and literature. This poem has many different English translations; this is one of them.

I was gifted this book from a fellow lotr fan who bought it from a used book store in San Francisco in 1993 (the receipt was in the book) sadly I don’t read music so I have zero idea what these songs sound like. The calligraphy is gorgeous though.
Some of my copies of initial letters from medieval manuscripts. Watercolor, ink
In September 1914, J.R.R. Tolkien visited his aunt's farm in Gedling near Nottingham. There, he wrote the poem "The Voyage of Éarendel the Evening Star", it was described by Christopher as "the first in the mythology".
These are the positions of the stars that he would have seen the night before he finished his poem from the location of Gedling.
Written in tengwar, the names of the stars and constellations are from the Silmarillion

We cheat Death from his rightful victory. No one can defeat us. We are glad to plunge Feet first into hell in the knowledge that we will rise.
