Spider was ecstatic as she ventured eastward. She found new millipedes, beetles, mosquitoes, spiders too! She collected berries to bring home and grew curious to keep exploring once she saw a smoke stack beyond the hills. It was getting late in the day, and she'd need to go home soon. But... she'd never met anyone else in these woods. And while ponies were always a drain, she needed to make sure that wasn't an uncontrolled fire.
Trotting through the bushes, she tried to move quietly. Spider was hoping anypony who might hear would assume she was a critter of some kind. But when she finally reached the edge of the shrub, seeing a perfectly contained fire and unicorn chopping wood, Spider sighed out of relief.
"AH! Oh my Celestia!" she suddenly heard from the pony. He was a scrawny stallion but a stallion nonetheless. He was curious, with a large scar over his right eye. The affected eye, a stark white instead of cyan, was seemingly blind. He bounded over to her, carelessly dropping the axe he'd been holding in his mouth. He was at her side in an instant, as Spider now got a close look at his strange pupils and fangs, exactly like hers! He noticed as well, looking her over while exclaiming, "Hey! You look just like me! You even have my wings!" He suddenly opened up his wings, showing off similarly bare and thin, bat-like wings.
"Oh!" Spider exclaimed, marveling at the similarity before her gaze shifted towards his horn, "Oh---!" 'That's why he wasn't using it to chop wood,' she thought, 'It's just a prosthetic.'
"Where did you come from?! I thought me and my mama were the only ones left!"
"The only ones left?" Spider snickered slightly, raising a brow, "What, was there a village around here?"
The pony raised a brow, "What's a village?"
Spider furrowed hers in return, looking around slightly as if to check if reality was still there. If the sky was still blue. "A village? A group of ponies and their houses living together?"
Spider laughed and replied, "Definitely more than six! You seriously haven't heard of a village before?"
He shook his head, replying, "I haven't seen anyone else besides my mama. You're the first!"
"Oh... uh," Spider looked the pony over again like he was crazy... which he was. "I'm fairly certain ponies still exist. There's a village out West if you wanted to see---"
"REALLY?!" he exclaimed, jumping up and down excitedly. He paused suddenly, sheepishly putting his head down, "I---I-I dunno... Mama wouldn't be very happy with me."
"Why wouldn't she want you to meet new people?" Spider asked, "You're a grown stallion, you should be able to go anywhere you want."
"Is that how it is with you and your mama?"
Spider shrugged, "After I turned old enough, I left home and no one stopped me."
The pony tilted his head curiously, "Why did you want to leave home?"
"Ponies never really liked me. I was always into bugs and piercings and stuff," Spider shrugged, "My name's even Spider!"
"Your name? Oh! Right, you don't know my name!" he replied, his tail excitedly whipping up and down, "My name's Lunar Borealis."
Spider held out her hoof expectantly as Lunar stared. She tried to prompt him slightly by gesturing with her hoof again, but then realized he probably didn't even know what she was trying to do. "U-Uh--- This is a hoof shake. You hold my hoof and I hold yours and we move them up and down. It's a greeting." Lunar curiously held out his hoof as Spider took it and showed him how to do it.
"Wow!" Lunar marveled, his eyes slowly drifting down to Spider's flank, "Is that your cutie mark? Wow! It's so detailed, just like my mama's! Mine's not so much, but I still really like it!"
He suddenly turned around and held out his flank which sported a stark white splotch. Spider raised her brow, looking it over. "What does it mean?"
"It means I'm good at painting things white!"
Spider looked at him rather confused. While she'd never met someone with... such a talent, she supposed anything could be a talent. "Cool. What have you painted?"
"Oh, nothing yet. But when I do, I'll be really good at it!"
Spider stared at him in disbelief for a long moment, sheepishly chuckling. "Oh. Well, in any case, it was nice to meet you, but I should go---"
"Wait!" Lunar exclaimed, grabbing Spider's hoof, "Please don't go! S-Show me where the village is first! Please?"
Spider paused for a moment, anxiously shaking her head 'no', "I dunno... town is so far and---"
"I'll find you so many bugs! And I'll make uh... I'll give you my sugar!"
Spider paused and glanced over at Lunar. "Really? ... How much?"
She sighed slightly, furrowing her brows, "At least a cup, and it's a deal."
"Definitely! Deal! W-We just need to be back by sunset!" Lunar exclaimed, his smile growing impossibly wide. "I'm gonna see so many more ponies!" As he grew full with laughter and happiness, Spider felt a strange pull towards that feeling. That feeling that she made someone else laugh and smile. It was like a warm bath--- inviting, gentle, and something she never wanted to go.
"W-Wait, by sunset? That's definetly not enough time," Spider replied.
"Oh... They we can go tomorrow! Mama needs to go and stock up on food anyway, so she'll be out picking berries."
Spider nodded, an anxious yet hopeful smile on her face, "Alright... tomorrow it is. Meet me where at ten, when the sun is right there." She pointed up to the sky.
Lunar nodded firmly, bouncing up and down excitedly--- "Bye! Bye new pony!" he shouted as Spider turned around and left.
"Lunar?" his mother called, as Lunar jumped slightly and perked up, "Who are you talking to?"
